Tenchi no Mon Hands-On

Sword combos dominate Sony's upcoming action RPG, Tenchi no Mon.

TOKYO--As part of Sony's large display of new PSP software at the Tokyo Game Show, the company has announced and shown off a work-in-progress version of Tenchi no Mon, a new action role-playing game.

Tenchi no Mon is currently only 30 percent complete, but it already looks like it could be pretty cool. The scene being shown at TGS drops you, a sword-wielding male, onto a fairly large battlefield. You can run around at will and take on a variety of enemies with some impressive and lengthy sword combos. Rushing strikes and crazy flipping sword strikes are the order of the day here, and it all looks pretty good. There is also an artificial intelligence-controlled companion to assist you, though she didn't seem terribly useful in the version on display. The game also has a selection of menu items that you can choose, but these didn't seem too intuitive at this point. The game will contain some form of spellcasting, as we were able to call down some lightning to strike multiple enemies.

Overall, the look of Tenchi no Mon seems pretty promising, though the game is still in the early stages of development. For more updates, be sure to check GameSpot's coverage of the Tokyo Game Show 2004.
