Team-Based Quake Slotted for 2002 Olympics

The PGL has some pretty big plans, but this one may be too big.

How big is the Professional Gamers League going to get? Pong-creator Nolan Bushnell, the league's founding commissioner, thinks it could be huge.

With his visionary status well-established, it's hard to argue with the individual many in computer gaming consider The Man, but his view of a future of online gaming that brings together hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of competitors worldwide did raise a couple of eyebrows at the PGL launch on Monday.

With the launch of the first season just under way, the Professional Gamers League has pockets full of high hopes. Which is what first days are for.

To the league's credit, it is already looking ahead to seasons two and three - and what may be in store for gamers down the line.

While no upcoming titles are firm, a PGL spokesperson did tell GameSpot News that the current plan is for PGL titles to be swapped out of the current action and strategy arenas as seasons progress and for a third competition category, simulation, to be added in season two.

Quake II, Hexen II, and Prey are in the running to replace Quake, the current action title, TEN said Tuesday. In the strategy category, Dark Reign and Total Annihilation are among the games being considered.

Among possible sim titles, the PGL says it has yet to decide on a flight or driving sim though it was leaning in the direction of flight. Competition in the sim category will commence in season two. Season three will see the beginning of team- or clan-based competition.

And about the Olympics? Well, it's just a possibility.
