Take-Two shelves Manhunt 2

Plans to release game "temporarily suspended" while publisher continues exploring options.

In the wake of international bans and an Adults Only rating in the US, Manhunt 2 won't make its July 10 release date, Take-Two Interactive has confirmed. The game had been expected to ship that day for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo Wii.

"Take-Two Interactive Software has temporarily suspended plans to distribute Manhunt 2 for the Wii or PlayStation platforms while it reviews its options with regard to the recent decisions made by the British Board of Film Classification and Entertainment Software Rating Board," a representative told GameSpot. "We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment."

While the ESRB's initial rating of an AO for Adults Only doesn't explicitly prohibit the game from being sold, most major US retailers refuse to carry AO games, and console manufacturers prohibit their third-party publishers from releasing AO titles on their systems.

nghtcrwlr821 Think of the children? That's what most of you idiots who think the game should be banned because you think it will mess up the minds of ours kids. These M rated games are made for adults and adults only. It's not the developers fault that you kid went on a killing spree because he played some violent game. It's the parents responsibly to monitor what they play and if the parent doesn't care then it's there fault. Don't blame the developer. They have to control over who plays it. you are absolutly right nghtcrwlr821 its the parent fault for not for monitering there kids.

Nickfury101 I find it interesting that people keep referring to the movie industry, and comparing a game to a movie. People tend to forget that the movie industry does have a X and N/A rating, both of which are allowed to be shown in movie theaters, but rarely do since companies like AMC, and Regal have company policies to not show these movies. This being said, since many people like to compare movies to video games in terms of graphic violence, would it be reasonable to rather compare a AO rated game to a X rated movie, instead of a R rated movie? yes, but you could then buy these x-rated movies, in their full unedited glory, for personal viewing. thats the difference. it's a freedom of expression thing. those movies may not get the chance to be in theaters, but they are sure as hell still accessible. In Manhunt 2's case, the original content is being destroyed so it may fit in an outdated and potentially biased cookie cutter form to appease the masses of single-parent soccer moms who let their kids play M rated games.

Well the way things are now they would need to tone it down so much that it would be rated T if it were anything else then they'll say M. not that it really matters what we say, once these people and companies get their panties in a bundle they will never change their mind. like with bull jack never saw nor knew anything about the game then he started calling it columbine remake, and he said that untill he finally saw the actuall game. then the moment he heard that you can kiss a dude he said there was homosex sex. my point being these people base everything that they say purely off of what they assume. plus they treat these things like they are marketing these games TO children.

not a good month for Take Two, is it? The closing of their NY developing studio, the poor ratings of Fantastic Four, and now this... but the question remains... Is Manhunt 2 any fun to begin with?

like i said before in the other post why have an AO rating if the game creators can't publish it

Rockstar should release a Mature (M) rated version for the consoles and an Adult Only (AO) version for the PC. That way everyone's happy and both versions get released.

this is ridiculous. what's wrong with adult content games to the mature audience.. freedom... yeah right.

This is the only option for Take-Two. Either they will try to appeal the ratings or they will have to tone down the game to get M ratings. You would think that Rockstar would have learned from all their previous issues. I guess not.

Why doesn't the AO rating even exist if console companies won't have the games on their systems!

What Take Two should do is "accidentally" lose some copies of the PS2/Wii games, to resurface somewhere else. They'll still make their money from PC sales when they get around to it, and having a small number of "sample" copies running about might just create more publicity. All in all, I think this somewhat detracts from the idea that Take Two made the game like this on purpose to create publicity... a game that is "temporarily shelved" is basically doomed to never be released, and publicity + no product = no money.

Is Sony going to stop the ADULT ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY from putting movies out for Blu-Ray... Highly doubt it. This is just a bunch of BS if you ask me. There is no valid reason an AO title should be outcast by the console makers.

i hope they talk about it the esrb and convince them to release the game as is as an m rated game. Face it, the game is going to be twisted, and one way or another it's going to get into kids hands. A little less gore is not going to make a difference in the scenario that video games make people kill stuff.

Avatar image for theskank

they need to just put Benny Hill music behind the game while you play. Then it will get a E rating.

I think its stupid for these companies not to release the game as AO, but I do understand it. I liken it to an M rated game being rated R if it were a movie, and an AO game being NC-17, and like NC-17 movies AO rated games aren't going to be marketed to the public.

I wonder if you would be allowed to release a game where you are a bear or something that goes around the forest eating other animals, and even humans. I wonder if that would pass the ratings board

Avatar image for lord_andross

Well, I can understand the diffrent companies for refusing it, however, just because its "interactive" killing doesn't make it any worse then horror films.

sadly take-two is becoming (has become) the victim of a Public relations nightmare, and the scapegoat of the whiny people saying they can't control their children. The only thing that take two is going to do is either have to bow to the esrb and remake the game or go to the only system that will allow an AO game, which is the PC. I really wish people would become a bit more reasonable and stop bowing to the cliche "The Children"
