Nintendo kicked off its surprise Nintendo Direct Mini presentation with another look at Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, the upcoming Switch remaster of the acclaimed Wii RPG. Along with showing off a new trailer, Nintendo announced the game's release date: May 29.

The trailer, which you can watch below, provides an overview of the game's story and showcases the improved visuals, which have been touched up considerably in the move to Switch. Most interestingly, the video ends with a look at Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected, a brand-new epilogue story included in the game that takes place following the main storyline.

Nintendo also announced a special Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Works edition. This version comes with a physical copy of the game and a hardcover art book. Europe, meanwhile, is receiving an even more lavish Collector's Edition, which includes a steel book game case, art book, poster, and vinyl and digital soundtrack.

The Definitive Works Set runs for $80 USD, while pricing details for the Collector's Edition has not yet been announced. You can learn more in our Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition pre-order guide.

While Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition now has a firm release date, Nintendo noted at the start of the Mini Direct that release dates are subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, so there's a chance any dates announced during the presentation could slip.

Despite being called a "mini" presentation, the surprise Nintendo Direct was packed with announcements. Nintendo confirmed the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character will be from Arms. We also got another look at Pokemon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor expansion and Animal Crossing: New Horizons' first seasonal event. A few things have surprise-released on the Eshop as well, including a free Bravely Default II demo.

I preordered the Works edition as soon as I heard about it. It's a shame that the US version isn't getting the same treatment as its European counterpart, but whatever. Xenoblade Chronicles is one of my all time favorite games. This remaster looks incredible. The biggest thing holding the original back was the hardware it was made on.
