Switch's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Sets New Franchise Sales Record In US

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tops Mario Kart Wii.

Following the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now off to a hot start in the US.

Combining digital and physical copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 459,000 copies on its launch day in the US last week, Nintendo announced today. The company claims that makes it the "fastest-selling game" in the franchise's history.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Switch's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Sets New Record

That record was previously held by Mario Kart Wii, which sold 433,900 units on launch day back in 2008, according to Nintendo.

A press release notes that the attach rate for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is 45 percent, which would mean US Switch sales are around 1.02 million units. The company says worldwide sales of the system have reached more than 2.7 million, and we learned today that it even made the costly move of shipping some consoles by air to meet demand.

The strong performance by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is particularly impressive considering it is merely an enhanced port of a Wii U game, rather than an original game.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains the Switch's best-selling game to date. In the US alone, it sold 925,000 copies on Switch in March. During that same span worldwide, it sold 2.76 million units.

I have put my Switch console to sleep (default power option), when I went back - my Zelda Breath of the Wild was corrupted while attempting to download update on 0% for almost whole day.Thats just scary with the fact that you cannot backup your save games. That is the last time I buy a console day 0 and become their beta tester.

After Zelda , Switch has no interesting games until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe so people bought it .

However Mario Kart 8 's very fun and Switch's version can play on go , very good .

I'm not surprised that major games from Nintendo sold well on Switch like their former consoles , but not sure for third party games especially in long time.

Waiting New Mario .

If you already have Zelda, what else are you honestly going to buy for your Switch?

@beantownsean: That's not the question you were asking. So tell me, how many "old games" are on Steam, PS4 and XboxOne marketplaces?

@fig56:

Plenty, but I wouldn't build a new PC for instance and then go gobble up a bunch of old games...from the 90s.

Don't get me wrong, I love old games...but they wouldn't be my first choice for a new PC build or new console.

Many of the games listed are already on some marketplace somewhere that many would already have access to them via Wii, WiiU, PS3, PS4, 360, XBO, Steam...etc.

Personally, I have all the platforms I listed, so for me the Switch has zero selling point

@beantownsean: I know what you mean. But there are new games on my list with more on the way. Plus, and a big plus since it's the reason many are buying the Switch, is the fact that you can take all those games on the go.

@corrus: Why are you so threatened by something different than what your used to? Plus, how conveniently that you ignore all the other 40 games that people can play besides Zelda.

Until we see a 3rd party game sell 3 million + copies on Switch, it means nothing for the future success of the system. Of course first party Nintendo games always sell well on the Nintendo box. That's all they have to buy on it.

@Rufus_the_rat: People haven't cared about 3rd party games on a Nintendo system in a long time. I can't think of one person that has a Nintendo as their only system.

@Rufus_the_rat: Wii sold a crap load of systems and 3rd parties still hardly made money on it... So 3rd parties selling well on a Nintendo system means crap of how the system will sell.

If you haven't notice for over 15+yrs, Nintendo don't NEED 3rd parties to survive. Nintendo themselves are the ultimate doom for there systems.. If Nintendo wasn't split to support 2 systems, i think they'd be better off, Its the same reason why MS and now Sony abandon handheld..

@sellingthings: PSP was actully a major success. 80m+ units and one of the best selling gaming platforms of all time. Vita though is a joke which is a shame because it had potential.

@sellingthings: PSP came out in 04 and 3DS came out in 2011. PSP was basically dead by the time 3DS came out and that was 6 years ago so it is super super dead now. That is why you don't see PSP in stores anymore but still see 3DS...

@heqteur: Wii-U started the same way and then tanked. I think it will do better than Wii-U but barely been a month, let's wait a lot longer until we know if Switch has a promising future or not.

Whats with all the Xbots and Ponies all of sudden hating ports?

MK 8 was a terrific game on a machine with a low install base.... it only makes sense to port it to Switch with a few updates and include all the DLC... I'd be far happier if it were $59.99 instead of $79.99 (in Canada)... but having a problem with this when you are a Xbox or PS fan is the ultimate hypocrisy.

@whatsazerg: It's like every Pro and Scorpio game is a PS4 or Xbox one port. I haven't seen a game other than maybe zero horizon dawn that was designed for the Pro, and Scorpio will most likely use Xbox one games(games designed for the Xbox one) and port them. I know it's not exactly porting, but the concept is the same.
