Switch Pro Will Have OLED Screen, Dataminer Claims

@naomha1: I'm just not convinced a new console is something Nintendo could deliver on. Not anything that would compete with Sony or Microsoft at any rate. Those consoles are at the high end of components and tech and not something Nintendo has ever done particularly well.

If they did drop a new console, it would have to be something pretty spectacular to make anyone take notice.

Unless Nintendo have secretly been working on something crazy and literally no one knows about it (unlikely), then I doubt you will ever see Nintendo deliver on that front anytime soon.

A new handheld with some decent specs wouldn't hurt, not the bargain basement components they seem to continuously use, I'm talking about components with some degree of future-proofing at least.

@nintendians: that would make the console too expensive for nintendo's tastes.

Nintendo has not been interested in competing at parity with Sony/MS since the Gamecube in 2001.

@nintendians: I think they are best holding down the handheld market because really, they have that buttoned up pretty tight at the moment. There is no chance in hell that Nintendo can compete with Sony or Microsoft in the console market. Even if Nintendo wanted to produce a new console, it wouldn't be for this gen. They'd need years just to develop the tech that would need to surpass the PS5 & Xbox Series X for the next gen of consoles in about 3-4 years time.

@nintendians: Why? This has never been what makes them money.

Reminder: Switch and Wii ***decimated*** sales of everything else. (N64, SNES, NES, Gameboy, same). Not a single Nintendo has ever been the best HW in its era.

@climhazard5: Not everyone has one yet. Nintendo sells in places no normal console ever will.

@climhazard5: Agreed. More importantly, however, the Switch is selling like flapjacks and Nintendo is making bank. They've seen that their rejection of the tech "arms race" can be profitable if the games are there.

Moreover, OLED screen? LOL, that would KILL the Switch price point. It's well known that Nintendo doesn't like to make overly expensive hardware, given their more family friendly nature. There's a reason you don't really see OLED TVs out there anymore.

Furthermore, this would create a third SKU to consider. We already have the Switch and the Switch Lite. As we've seen with the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, the likelihood of the top of the range being used to its fullest is slim, as the games are made for the lowest common denominator.

Unless they plan to make a home-only console, a sort of counterpart to the Switch Lite for people who have no desire at all to game on the go but would like an entry into the Switch for less, their next platform is going to be their NEXT platform.

@climhazard5: If they announced a Switch Pro with 4k docked support, I would buy one. Currently, I do not own a Switch.

So yes, there is support for this.

@climhazard5: It's aged pretty badly compared to almost every other device out there right now. Phones are literally trouncing the switch with regards to CPU & GPU output and have far superior OLED screens & resolution. This is what people expect nowadays from any handheld device.

Software is basically stuck at a certain visual fidelity, with no chance on improving on that. If you're happy with that then yeah, stick with it but mine personally, barely gets used. Maybe picked it up literally 6 months ago and that's about it. Not even going to bother selling it because I doubt anybody would want it.

It's hard to see how Nintendo can stay relevant right now. I barely hear of any interesting news regarding new or proposed future hardware or software for that matter.

I guess we'll just see what happens but I doubt anything interesting will drop from Nintendo anytime soon.

@climhazard5: Strongly disagree. A handheld that could competently play the latest cross-gen games would be cool.

@clawson34: For real. OLED TVs aren't even really sold much anymore due to how stupid expensive the tech has remained. Sony had to drop that from the 2nd revision Vita to get the costs down, and Nintendo isn't going to drive this system into the same price range as the PS4 and Xbox Series X. This is all bupkiss.

@sparent180: It'll be a 4 year old handheld in March, this year and the components were dated, even on release. I doubt it's selling as much as you think it is and it's almost certainly ready to be replaced. Problem is, what to replace it with?

I don't think there will be much uptake to move over to 4K or OLED, which has been around for a long time. Nintendo just starting to catch on that people actually want decent screens to play on their handhelds. They should have opted for that on release. The Vita had a beautiful OLED screen on launch.

They've got no chance competing with Sony & Microsoft on the console front, so a new, more powerful handheld would be a good move to keep Nintendo relevant at this point.

@sparent180: They can certainly wait quite longer, but by the time Pro coming out, 3rd-party companies may have already moved on. Because current 3rd-party games are already pushing Switch to its breaking limit, if nothing is done to improve, devs cannot port more games into it. Therefore, stronger hardwares = more attention from 3rd parties = more games = more players joining in = more hardwares get sold. PS4 released in 2013 and 3 years later PS4 Pro version appeared, meanwhile Switch released in 2017, that means it about to reach year 4, thus it is reasonable enough to think of releasing Pro right now, and don't forget that Switch is way underpowered when compared to base PS4 and XONE, being able to hold this long is already a miracle, but that won't stay for any much longer.

@hardwenzen: I wouldln't go that far. 2024, maybe. Though it's entirely possible they might go for 1440p/60 instead.
