Switch Pro Will Have OLED Screen, Dataminer Claims

It looks like the rumors of a Switch Pro may be inching towards reality.

According to known dataminer SciresM, Nintendo's latest firmware update contains mention of an upgraded Switch console code named Aula, as reported by VGC. This lends additional credence to the theory that Nintendo has a Switch Pro model in its plans for the near future. It has been rumored for months, but Nintendo has thus far given no indication to its existence. [Update: Following E3, Nintendo finally confirmed a new Switch OLED model that releases on October 8.]

Aula allegedly uses the same Mariko (Tegra X1+) SoC chip that was implemented with the Switch Lite and updated 2019 regular model Switches. While this alone doesn't necessarily indicate improved performance, ScriesM claims that it's likely the chips will be pushed to higher clock speeds. SciresM also claims that the firmware mentions support for a Realtek chip, which has been advertised as a "4K UHD multimedia SoC." Bloomberg's report on Nintendo's upgraded console from August mentioned that the new system would likely support 4K graphics, so this chip may be how Nintendo is looking to do that.

Vita fans will be excited to know that hardware wise, the next Switch console will supposedly have an upgraded display in the form of an OLED screen. However, ScriesM noted that the display will likely not be a higher resolution when in handheld mode, and that the 4K chip may be located in the dock instead of the tablet itself, meaning you would only be able to play in 4K when your Switch is docked. A screen of that resolution would not provide much benefit at the Switch's size, so this would make sense.

For those who enjoy playing in handheld mode, Aula will allegedly also feature "substantially" better battery life and cooling. The upgraded original Switch currently has the most battery life of the lineup, with the Switch Lite coming in second and the launch Switch in third. None of them provide a drastically long battery life.

Despite the information out there on an imminent upgrade for the Switch, Nintendo has continued to downplay any plans on its part. In an interview with Polygon in December, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser remained firm that the company would be focusing on its current hardware and software lineups. Nintendo has not typically offered very many hardware revisions over its systems' lifetimes. The Wii did eventually receive a smaller version that was missing certain features, but only Nintendo's handhelds have typically seen several versions.

"The momentum on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite in the fourth year is strong," Bowser told Polygon. "And we believe we’re changing the trajectory of another typical console life cycle. And we will continue, for the foreseeable future, to really lean into both of those platforms and the content that comes with it, because it’s the symbiotic relationship that makes the real difference. And it’s why Nintendo Switch is so differentiated."

The Switch's lifespan is still up in the air, but with or without a Pro model, the console has seen tremendous sales with over 68 million units sold as of September 2020.

highly unlikely. Nintendo always looks to cut as many corners as possible to keep costs down. There's no chance they switch to a premium grade screen.

Still having a 720p display doesn't sound like a "Pro" device to me.

1080p displays on phones and tablets have been a thing since around 2013, so 1080p in 2021 doesn't sound like too much to ask for.

Same as Xbox and PC: Just different game/graphics settings for each HW model, if this is accurate. "Generations" are dead.

The Switch is awesome. As someone that travels 4 days out of the week I play it on my down time. Usually some Diablo 3 or some Zelda. For being a handheld and not exactly graphically "challenging" it plays games surprisingly well and makes them look good while doing it. I'm very happy with Nintendo this gen. However, I'm still looking forward to a full console ,something like the N64 or Gamecube, to come out one of these days. A dedicated console with full graphical capabilities like the new gen consoles. I'd love to be able to play a new revision of some Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, Metroid or even FF games again on the Nintendo.

@naomha1: I'm just not convinced a new console is something Nintendo could deliver on. Not anything that would compete with Sony or Microsoft at any rate. Those consoles are at the high end of components and tech and not something Nintendo has ever done particularly well.

If they did drop a new console, it would have to be something pretty spectacular to make anyone take notice.

Unless Nintendo have secretly been working on something crazy and literally no one knows about it (unlikely), then I doubt you will ever see Nintendo deliver on that front anytime soon.

A new handheld with some decent specs wouldn't hurt, not the bargain basement components they seem to continuously use, I'm talking about components with some degree of future-proofing at least.

i think it's best nintendo do a "switch" console that rival the ps5 and xbox series x in specs. while using nvidia's gpu tech. and it could play current "switch" games in 4k upscale via nvidia's dlss 2.x while downloading high end 3d asset for the "pro" compatible games (still work on the current "switch"es without the pro features) for the console only "switch" that is pro enchanted.

@nintendians: that would make the console too expensive for nintendo's tastes.

Nintendo has not been interested in competing at parity with Sony/MS since the Gamecube in 2001.

@lostn: yeah, but it'll please 3rd parties and those graphics freaks, as for me - i'm fine the way the "switch" is, but i do want high detailed nintendo games too from time to time as long as it have a good campaign and controls.

yeah, nintendo would be a generation late in specs. compared to sony and microsoft.

@nintendians: i think nintendo has more to lose than gain if they try to match MS and Sony in specs and price.

Nintendo makes a lot of profit the way they run their business as it is. They wouldn't want to change that just so they can boast the same specs. Their console price sells for a bit cheaper, but the hardware is a lot cheaper. That means they make a bigger profit on each one they sell, and since they sell so many of them, it's a win-win for Nintendo.

People don't choose a PS4 over a Switch. They choose a PS4 in addition to a Switch, so Nintendo doesn't lose out on your money anyway.

It's the highest selling console of the last 24 months.

@lostn: yeah, since 3rd parties company doesn't trust nintendo much since n64, ps1 and sega saturn era anymore, so in a way it not worth it, the only nintendo ip i think deserve to be "next gen" graphics like their realistic sports game (1080 snowboarding) and semi realistic games (legend of zelda and metroid), while their cartoony games (mario and animal crossing) is fine the way it is.

yeah, nintendo would just be a 1 or 2 generation behind sony and microsoft.

yeah, nintendo console became a secondary console during gamecube life.

i'm glad it is, but hopefully the pro model would between ps4 pro and xbox one x in spec., i mostly play in dock mode, so i don't mind ps4 pro performance for the "switch pro".

I can't see it matching that kind of power in a form factor that small. If it could do it, it will be very expensive. If they can pull it off, I'd be all over it.

@lostn: i think it's possible, since smart mobile phone and tablet gpu isn't as strong as laptop gpus, but most likely nintendo going to used a powerful modified tegra x1+ that could be close to basic xbox one and ps4 in spec.

@nintendians: I think they are best holding down the handheld market because really, they have that buttoned up pretty tight at the moment. There is no chance in hell that Nintendo can compete with Sony or Microsoft in the console market. Even if Nintendo wanted to produce a new console, it wouldn't be for this gen. They'd need years just to develop the tech that would need to surpass the PS5 & Xbox Series X for the next gen of consoles in about 3-4 years time.

@ecurl143: yeah, but it drags on nintendo would just like get mobile game on their "switch" when 3rd party goes to ps5, xbox series x and pc for high end gaming. i think nintendo could, if we count 1st and 2nd party title only, nintendo titles would be up there, but when it comes to 3rd party titles, yeah nintendo would be a the bottom. probably not, but at least make it a bit powerful over the ps4 pro specs. nintendo could use current tech. right now and it still meet the ps5 and xbox series x or surpass them.

@nintendians: Switch is dead in anything reasonably decent game-wise now. No serious developer is going to bother with it. It's basically irrelevant now.

PS5 & XBSX just took everything to a whole new level and Switch was struggling to even cut it with bargain basement ports on previous gen. There is no way in hell that anything from this gen will make it to the switch.

@ecurl143: if the "switch" was dead, how come people still buying it, still out selling the ps5 and xbox series x during those month when ps5 and xbox series x came out.

not really, pc already done that and it last longer and ps5 and xbox series x still not close to it. "switch" may not be up there with the ps5 and xbox series x in specs., but still have better price and value since you can't make a ps5 or xbox series x portable unless your stream it off to a smart phone with their apps. and with their controllers only.

@nintendians: Why? This has never been what makes them money.

Reminder: Switch and Wii ***decimated*** sales of everything else. (N64, SNES, NES, Gameboy, same). Not a single Nintendo has ever been the best HW in its era.

@Pyrosa: i guess to get some of the people, whom is into high end gaming and have more 3rd party support like sony and microsoft has.

yeah, it working but sooner or later, it will eventually stop. technically the n64 have better hardware than the ps1 during that era, but 3rd party didn't want to used their cartridge since it's more expensive to buy and produced than cd back then.

Is there honestly anybody out there that is currently unhappy with their Switch and wants more? I have barely scratched the surface of games I want to play on Switch. A hardware upgrade is extremely unnecessary right now. I think they know that.

@climhazard5: Agreed. More importantly, however, the Switch is selling like flapjacks and Nintendo is making bank. They've seen that their rejection of the tech "arms race" can be profitable if the games are there.

Moreover, OLED screen? LOL, that would KILL the Switch price point. It's well known that Nintendo doesn't like to make overly expensive hardware, given their more family friendly nature. There's a reason you don't really see OLED TVs out there anymore.

Furthermore, this would create a third SKU to consider. We already have the Switch and the Switch Lite. As we've seen with the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, the likelihood of the top of the range being used to its fullest is slim, as the games are made for the lowest common denominator.

Unless they plan to make a home-only console, a sort of counterpart to the Switch Lite for people who have no desire at all to game on the go but would like an entry into the Switch for less, their next platform is going to be their NEXT platform.

@climhazard5: It's aged pretty badly compared to almost every other device out there right now. Phones are literally trouncing the switch with regards to CPU & GPU output and have far superior OLED screens & resolution. This is what people expect nowadays from any handheld device.

Software is basically stuck at a certain visual fidelity, with no chance on improving on that. If you're happy with that then yeah, stick with it but mine personally, barely gets used. Maybe picked it up literally 6 months ago and that's about it. Not even going to bother selling it because I doubt anybody would want it.

It's hard to see how Nintendo can stay relevant right now. I barely hear of any interesting news regarding new or proposed future hardware or software for that matter.

I guess we'll just see what happens but I doubt anything interesting will drop from Nintendo anytime soon.

@ecurl143: there hardware when released has always been decent, never top.. they just age badly and they know this and call me crazy but i think its design as such that after X years of aging badly, they then release last yrs tech and sell it as new, thus in 4 or 5yrs they are ready for a new system...

Its very hard for Sony or MS to Wow us anymore with there tech, but becuase Nintendo takes tiny steps in tech to save money every release feels like a big step (when its not)

@thereal25: I would agree if I was interested in playing high end games on my Switch. I can sincerely say that when I have friends or fam over and we are laughing our asses off playing mariokart or smash, nobody in the room cares about 4k or on par graphics/ framerates. In the end it all depends what you personally want to play on it. I use my PS4 or SeriesX right now to play the latest and greatest. But my Switch fills a gap in my enrertainment that those consoles can't. We are all different and want different things from the brands we love, I respect that. I can def see now why some ppl might want a more powerful Switch if they are dreaming of playing more advanced titles. I personally just dont give a goombas poop whether or not my Switch has all that jazz right now. I will in a few years, just not now.

@clawson34: For real. OLED TVs aren't even really sold much anymore due to how stupid expensive the tech has remained. Sony had to drop that from the 2nd revision Vita to get the costs down, and Nintendo isn't going to drive this system into the same price range as the PS4 and Xbox Series X. This is all bupkiss.

I feel like Nintendo is better off riding out the Switch's success for now. It's still selling extremely well. The fanbase is going to eat up new exclusives like BOTW2 and whatever the new Metroid is. It doesn't seem like Switch owners are that concerned about the hardware and power disadvantage compared to other consoles.

Why not wait for the sales to slow down, wait for technology to improve a little more and possibly become cheaper, then come out with a Switch Pro or 2.0?

@sparent180: It'll be a 4 year old handheld in March, this year and the components were dated, even on release. I doubt it's selling as much as you think it is and it's almost certainly ready to be replaced. Problem is, what to replace it with?

I don't think there will be much uptake to move over to 4K or OLED, which has been around for a long time. Nintendo just starting to catch on that people actually want decent screens to play on their handhelds. They should have opted for that on release. The Vita had a beautiful OLED screen on launch.

They've got no chance competing with Sony & Microsoft on the console front, so a new, more powerful handheld would be a good move to keep Nintendo relevant at this point.

@ecurl143: The Switch was dated when it came out. It was less powerful than either the PS4 or Xbox One, but outsold the Xbox One's lifetime total in two years. People don't buy Nintendo hardware for power - they buy it for Nintendo software.

The only possible SKU that would make sense would be something like a Switch Family, a sort of home-only console with more USBs and places to put Joycons, with an emphasis on local multiplayer. Anything else dilutes the market and won't really be supported anyway, as the New Nintendo 3DS proved.

@sparent180: They can certainly wait quite longer, but by the time Pro coming out, 3rd-party companies may have already moved on. Because current 3rd-party games are already pushing Switch to its breaking limit, if nothing is done to improve, devs cannot port more games into it. Therefore, stronger hardwares = more attention from 3rd parties = more games = more players joining in = more hardwares get sold. PS4 released in 2013 and 3 years later PS4 Pro version appeared, meanwhile Switch released in 2017, that means it about to reach year 4, thus it is reasonable enough to think of releasing Pro right now, and don't forget that Switch is way underpowered when compared to base PS4 and XONE, being able to hold this long is already a miracle, but that won't stay for any much longer.

I'd rather have solid FPS at 1080p than 4k. The switch doesn't need to boast insane graphics, it just needs to perform steadily. The latest Hyrule Warriors is proof of that need.

Well. That is disappointing.

I guess I'll stick with exclusives and first party titles only and play everything else on PS5.

Plus, i don't think upgrading the hardware will make that much of a difference on first party games are usually cartoonish and don't benefit from a 4k upgrade.

Let's see. I'll wait for Nintendo's official details.
