The CW has announced that the Supernatural's final season will begin airing on October 8, placing the series finale's air date on November 19. Before COVID-19 changed pretty much everything imaginable and expected about 2020, the long-running fantasy series was slated to end production in May before the pandemic paused production. Production on the show's last two episodes began Tuesday in Vancouver, according to Deadline, making it the first WBTV series to resume production in that city. The finale, according to Entertainment Weekly, will air following an hour-long special titled "Supernatural: The Long Road Home."

The long-running series, which so far has spanned 15 seasons and 320 episodes, follows a pair of brothers who follow in their father's footsteps as fighters and hunters of monsters, demons, and (as the title suggests) supernatural baddies. The show was created by Eric Kripke (The Boys, Timeless), and its cast includes Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Katie Cassidy, Lauren Cohan, and Misha Collins. It was announced earlier this week that Ackles will be joining Kripke's other show, The Boys, in its third season.

Along with Arrow (which began in 2012) wrapping up way back in January, Supernatural's ending signals a potential--necessary--new era for The CW. They were the network's longest running series, and with them both gone by the end of the year, it leaves the network with opportunities in filling the vacuum created by both series ending.

A Supernatural spin-off isn't likely. During the 2019 TCA press tour, The CW president Mark Pedowitz said, "If there was a spin-off to be had, I'd love to have it. That said, I've come to somewhat of a conclusion that the show is the two brothers." As we wrote last year, however, the show may actually be the series' signature classic car. Maybe it's time to try bringing back Knight Rider, again?
