Superman Star Henry Cavill Says A Sad Farewell To His Controversial Mustache

Has there ever been a movie mustache more discussed than the one that actor Henry Cavill grew last year? The actor's villainous role in the upcoming Mission Impossible: Fallout required an impressive piece of facial hair, which in itself isn't that interesting. But Cavill's stache became the subject of some notoriety when it was reported that Fallout producers Paramount weren't allowing him to shave for reshoots on Justice League, in which Cavill played Superman. As result, Superman appeared in various Justice League scenes with a much-ridiculed CGI top lip.

Cavill has finally shaved and recorded a special message for fans on Instagram to mark the moment. Introducing himself as "sometimes superhero and former secret agent," the star bids farewell to "kingstache" and assures us that his cleanly-shaven face "is not CGI." He then shares a moving montage of fond moments between himself and his sadly departed mustache. Check it out below:

It wasn't long before Mission Impossible: Fallout director Chris McQuarrie also weighed in on the issue. McQuarrie replied to Cavill's post with, "Dammit man. Did no one tell you about tomorrow's reshoot?"

McQuarrie isn't the only director to make fun of last summer's mustache controversy. Last month, Justice League co-director Zack Snyder posted an image of himself with a scruffy beard and suggested that it was time shave. When one fan inevitably replied, "you could just remove it via CGI," Synder replied, "We all know that doesn't work."

Mission Impossible: Fallout hits theaters on July 27, 2018, and the first trailer was released last month. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt once more, with support from Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Alec Baldwin.

While we don't have many plot details yet, McQuarrie previously stated that it will be an "emotional journey" for Ethan Hunt. "I've seen five of these movies and I don't know who Ethan Hunt is," he said last year. "One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what's really going on in Ethan's head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it."
