Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Byleth DLC Out Now

With Byleth, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now has eight Fire Emblem fighters.

Comments

The final DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has arrived on the Nintendo Eshop. Byleth, from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, is the last combatant as part of the game's first Fighters Pass.

A playable character in the latest Fire Emblem entry, Byleth has both male and female options available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Unique to Byleth are the Hero Relics, a collection of powerful weapons that are swapped out based on attack direction. One attack will send out a spear whose tip, like Marth or Lucina's sword, deals more damage; another will slam down a weighty axe with super armor and destructive capabilities. It all results in a character whose mobility is "slightly better than Robin's," according to game director Masahiro Sakurai, and more varied than any other Fire Emblem combatant currently available in Ultimate.

Alongside Byleth comes a new stage: the Garreg Mach Monastery from Three Houses. It's a transitioning stage featuring many parts of the iconic location, including the Cathedral, Marketplace, Reception Hall, and more. You will also spot various members from the other houses hanging out in the different stage parts, like Dimitri and Ingrid in the Marketplace or Flayn and Rhea in the Cathedral.

Byleth can be purchased individually for $6 USD or as part of the Fighters Pass, which runs for $25 USD / $37 AUD / £20 GBP. Picking up the Fighters Pass nets you the four other DLC characters: Banjo and Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie), Hero (Dragon Quest), Joker (Persona 5), and Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury). Piranha Plant, which was free DLC when Ultimate first launched, is not part of the Fighters Pass and must be bought separately for $6 USD.

Byleth may be the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character for the moment, but they won't be the last DLC character forever. Sakurai has announced that a second Fighters Pass is in the works, with six more characters confirmed to be part of the bundle. He hasn't said which characters will be in Fighters Pass Vol. 2, but Sakurai did clarify that all six combatants have already been decided upon. The fighters will be released between now and December 2021, and the bundle will cost $30 USD instead of $25 USD like the first one.
