Super Mega Baseball 3 Announced, And The Release Date Is Soon

Super Mega Baseball 3 will bring hyper-stylized baseball to Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC very soon.

Super Mega Baseball 3 has been announced for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, with the first trailer revealing that the game will launch in April 2020. The third game in the well-liked baseball series adds a new Franchise mode, interface upgrades, and more detailed graphics. It's developed by Metalhead Studios, which also developed the first two games in the series.

Franchise mode is the big draw, as it lets you play across multiple seasons and deal with players who develop, age, and retire, as well as signing and releasing members of your team. You'll be able to customize the length and structure of your seasons and create your own teams.

This sounds like the major new single-player addition; if you take the game online, you'll be able to compete cross-platform in Pennant Race mode, climbing up the division ranks as you go.

Interestingly, the press release also mentions that there will be both a demo and a "free trial version" that allows you to play "an unlimited number of games" in Pennant Race mode, so as to keep matchmaking times short and the online userbase active during the game's launch period. It's unclear whether this option will remain in place indefinitely or if trial users will have to buy the game to continue after a certain date.

Despite its cartoony look and exaggerated animations, Super Mega Baseball 3 is aiming to be a strong simulation of the sport, with new mechanics for pick-offs and base-stealing, as well as situational player traits and more options for both batters and pitchers.

The game will cost $45 at launch. An exact date in April has not been announced.

The Super Mega Baseball series has been a critical success since the first game's launch in 2014. Super Mega Baseball 2: Ultimate Edition carries a Metacritic score of 87 on Nintendo Switch.
