Super Mario Run Didn't Make The Money Nintendo Hoped For

Mario's first mobile game falls short.

Nintendo's president says revenue from Super Mario Run was lower than expected, but he insists pay-to-play mobile games are here to stay at the gaming giant.

In an interview with the Nikkei Asian Review, Tatsumi Kimishima said the mobile game's earnings "did not meet our expectations."

Super Mario Run, the first mobile game to feature Nintendo's star character, is free to download, but only a limited amount of content is free-to-play. To unlock the full game, players must pay US $10 / £10 / AU $15. By the end of January, the game hit a whopping 78 million downloads on iOS only, but only 5% of players had purchased the full game.

The game made its Android debut this week alongside the release of a major update for the iOS version. In version 2.0.0, Nintendo has expanded the free-to-play content in the game, which is included in the Android release.

While Super Mario Run has gotten more free content, it is another Nintendo game that is the company's smartphone "cash cow," according to Nikkei Asian Review. Fire Emblem Heroes, a more traditional free-to-play game, has been wildly successful in sales. Despite that, Nintendo insists pay-to-play is the preferred business model.

"Heroes is an outlier. We honestly prefer the Super Mario Run model," a senior company official told Nikkei.

In 2015, Nintendo announced an ambitious plan to break into mobile games. It has released two games so far, Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes. Animal Crossing, originally supposed to be released last year, is now delayed with a release sometime in the next fiscal year. Nintendo now says it plans to release 2-3 mobile games a year.

It's because it cost so much when there are better run style games out there for free. Plus always online is ridiculous it's a single player game.

@KahnArtizt: let me think when data is running low or a tablet which isn't on 4g. Plus why does it need to be online all the time most of the game is single player

@KahnArtizt: Try my work. T-Mobile hates our building. Had it not been for Wi-Fi connection, I couldn't play the damn thing at all.

@KahnArtizt: In America cell phone companies are greedy, so turning off your data is common. I do it all the time because I don't want stupid games like this eating up data for no reason.

A single player game that is always online sucks. If ever I don't have wifi or data I can't play the game and Nintendo expects me to think this is good value? Maybe they don't know everyone else beat them to the run style games. The only thing special about this game is Mario not being on a Nintendo platform.

@xcollector: They probably thought more people would be willing to pay a premium based on the IP. Nintendo seems to think their IPs are a cut above everything else in the industry.

@jimmywolf: not sure what you were trying to say here.

They're not a cut above, but they've been making "good" games for 30 years?

And their "rinse and repeat" IP'S usually offer more variation each time than others who just cash in on more content that's exactly the same.

Other developers would be like Nintendo if they had the talent and made the effort. They don't.

Oh, but I thought you were bragging about how it had been downloaded 374 billion times? You're saying people don't pay ridiculous premiums for dime-a-dozen F2P mobile trash?

Get your fingers out of the mobile gutter, Nintendo. It demeans you.

It is not that expensive, but mobile had hundreds probably thousands of good "free" games, so a good but $10 game won't be as popular as those other games even when in the long term people may spend more in them.

If their numbers are right they still made 39 million on a crap mobile game that took them almost no time or money to make.

@Paulf001: That's true, if anything this makes Nintendo's legendary stubbornness a blessing in disguise. They'll shut down your fan game, they'll take your youtube revenue, but at least they won't go all-in on making trash games for a quick buck.

2.99€ and you have a deal, but not until.

Itsa decent enough game, but not worth 10€ for something that can be completed in a short amount of time.

Plus I'm most likely to play a mobile game on a plane..... Im cant with this one!

When a good chunk of gamers are just looking for the nostalgia and you offer a decent size for a free playable demo....no one will buy. It's nostalgia. Not everyone is going to pay for that if you can get what you need for free.

People who spent 500-800 bucks for a phone can't pay 10 bucks for an actual quality game. I would also try to milk these spoiled brats. Thumbs up to Nintendo for trolling the trashiest gaming market on the planet.

14 bucks in Canada I would probably buy it at 10 dollars but even that's pushing it 4-7 would be max for me which i think works out to like 3-5 in USA

It would've made way more sales if they weren't so greedy and asked $10 for such a short game. They've clearly stated they're not adding more to the game so why should people pay $10 for 24 levels?

You might be able to get away with that if Super Mario Run existed in a magical mobile game vacuum where no other mobile games existed but since there's so many other mobile games out there for free they sort of eat Nintendo's lunch. The average mobile gamer plays mobile games to kill time, quality isn't a big factor. So if they can get an auto runner with randomized levels for free your $10 super short Mario game looks ridiculous. Even if you fall back on the toad rally for longevity Nintendo decided to limit how much you can play it.
