Super Mario All-Stars hitting EU Wiis December 3

SNES collection of NES classics featuring Mario's earliest solo adventures hitting Nintendo's current console in time for Christmas in Europe.

In 1993, Nintendo released Super Mario All-Stars to some fanfare across the world. The Super Nintendo package rolled up Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3, as well as the highly sought after Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2, marketed in the bundle as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Thankfully for the millions of European Wii owners who weren’t even a twinkling in the eye of their local plumber back in the early '90s, Nintendo today confirmed the package was being rereleased in the region for the Wii on December 3.

Super Mario Bros. All-Stars - 25th Anniversary Edition had previously only been confirmed for a Japanese release. While all four games on the disc were released through the Wii’s Virtual Console in 2006 and 2007, Nintendo is sweetening the retail package with the inclusion of a CD featuring tunes from Mario games across the ages and a "special booklet" detailing the 25 years of Mario's history.

The collection celebrates the 25th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan in September 1985. However, 2010 is only the 23rd anniversary of Mario's arrival in Europe; the original Mario game only made it to the territory in 1987. Super Mario Bros. itself was the greatest selling game of all time for 20 years with in excess of 40 million copies sold, partly because it was bundled with the original NES. It was dethroned in 2009 by Wii Sports, which was bundled with the Wii at launch.

Pricing for Europe is yet to be announced, but the package will go on sale in Japan next week for ¥2,500 (£19, $30)--this is lower than most first-party titles, which retail at ¥5,800 (£44, $70) in the region. There has been no confirmation of a release for the collection outside of Europe and Japan.

They might as well should of included Mario World 1 & 2. That would of made a complete package. Why didn't Nintendo think about it?

Big whup! This is just a re-release of the SNES version of SMB All-Stars. If anything they should have updated the graphics (again) and/or included more classic games ranging from the original Donkey Kong to Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

Oh, and for my eagle eyed Nintendo fans. Check the EU press release pics. If you look close, that is the USA box for Super Mario Bros with USA game catridges next to it sitting beside that TV and NES system American setup. Ummm hello! They made a mistake and revealed the USA release...lol.

$30 is cheap. I will buy this day 1. And a year from now, those who skipped it...will regret it. It is on a disc. When have you seen the classic Mario's on disc? This will be backwards compatible with the whatever NEW Nintendo home console making it even more value. And getting the soundtrack and a booklet/DVD is worth it. End of speech..lol :)

Yeah, I'm not stupid. Super Mario All Stars on the virtual console for 800 points would be fair a deal. This, on the other hand, is ridiculously over-priced. This should have been a proper collection, which would mean including Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

whoever is upset over the fact that it's not "updated with current graphics", shouldn't own this anyway.

Nintendo would be crazy not to release this in America - no, absolutely insane. Hopefully we'll be seeing this game getting a US release date soon...or expect riots.

How is it a rip off? if you download them it comes up to 20 bucks, now you get music, posters a great box and you have a physical copy to have as a collectors item, for what might be 29.99 or 19.99, just dont buy it if you think its a rip off simple.

It's nice for collector's purposes. I just think Nintendo could have paid better homage to the greatest gaming series of all-time. Maybe some updated sprites and a few more games in the series on the disc to boot. Being the sucker for these things that I am, if it comes to America, I will probably pick one up.

It looks awesome! Too bad I already had them all in my VC versions. These ones should've be the ones to hit VC first! it would be great if Nintendo allows an upgrade of each version via VC too ;-)

@1592364780 I'm not sure, but on the Nintendo site you can enter a competition to celebrate the anniversary, but it doesn't mention what the prizes are. I wouldn't be surprised if a red Wii was one of the prizes.

blakney, I agree DK and OG Mario Bros should not be included, as they are not the formula which made mario what it is today.

@blakeney No, the original mario bros is the first proper mario game. Not super mario bros.

@spike6958 I dont think it should start at the original Dk.... sure mario made his debut there, but "Super Mario Bros" IS the original "Mario Game".

@1592364780 I dunno, but i think they should make a Wii that looks exactly the same as a nes to go with it!

I read elsewhere they there may be plans for a limited edition Red Wii to go with the 25th anniversary of Mario, can anyone sum this up for me?

This is pointless. When I first heard about it I thought they would at least update the graphics a bit as they had done with the snes release. But they appear not to be doing that so I will not bother buying this since I already have the snes one. Rip-off merchants.

It would be much better if they port the version that includes Super Mario World. Also would had been even better if they included Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 in that collection too.

They really messed this up IMO, they should have made a true "Timeline" collection starting from the original Donkey Kong, and going up to Mario 64, or maybe even Super Mario Sunshine, that I would be happy to buy but this just isn't worth it.

*cough* MASSIVE RIP OFF *cough*. Spend your £19 GBP on an old SNES with the real cartridge too. Those games probably won't even take up 1% of the available space on the DVD they'll be printed on. The music CD sounds interesting, but it would take far more than that to make it a decent value package.

Bundle in Mario 64 with that and I'd consider it. Otherwise, they can shove off. Three and a half SNES games? It takes the piss, I think. Oh, of course, a 'music' CD and a book of info you can find on Wikipedia for free. Joke...
