Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, And More Reportedly Being Remastered For Switch

Super Mario 64, 3D World, and Sunshine are among several games reportedly coming to Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch is apparently about to get a hefty serving of Mario, including several classic 3D games from the series' past and an all-new role-playing game.

Reported by VGC and Eurogamer, Nintendo is planning to release remastered Switch versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Galaxy as part of the franchise's 35th birthday celebration.

The remastered games would be coming from four different consoles: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World will apparently be a Deluxe Edition with new levels, and a Gematsu report also corroborated that Nintendo has a new Paper Mario game in development. The last Paper Mario game was Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U, which received a mixed reception when it launched just before the Switch in late 2016.

VGC said the new games are due to be announced as Nintendo shares more details on its Universal projects, including theme parks and its Illumination-produced animated Mario film. Plans for E3 announcements changed after the entire event was canceled, so the official news could be coming sooner than initially planned.

Thus far, Nintendo has kept Mario platforming fans busy on Switch with Super Mario Odyssey and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The latter game packs in the New Super Luigi U expansion and a few extra bonus features not found on the Wii U version. Original 2D platformers like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World are also free to play with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Which games do you want to see make the cut? Let us know below and check out our list of the Mario games we want on Switch.

Why don't they do something smart and release them as a "3D Mario Collection" in the vein of the Halo Master Chief Collection? Have all the games together, basically, with bonus challenges that could run across games, etc.

I would love to see Super Mario 3D World get ported on the Switch individually. It is one of those Wii U games that must be ported on the Switch, that way there will be no point or reason to own a Wii U and no point or reason the Wii U should exist since it sold very weak. I would also love to see a brand new 3D Donkey Kong game like Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.

I hate to say it, but if they do in fact remaster Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, I'd buy the Switch almost immediately.

Great news!

Now, if they also include Super Mario Galaxy 2, then I'm sold. I've been wanting this for so long now.

The last Mario game I played was Super Mario 64. So I have a lot of catching up to do.

I think a lot of people didn't play the Mario Galaxies quite enough to actually enjoy/understand their praise!
The concept can be a "Turn off" at first almost make you sick about that spheric theme but if you go beyond the first couple of levels there's some amazing things in there!

There's a bunch of levels built around some powerups that totally transform Mario and give you brand new platforming experiences :
Bee Mario
Cloud Mario
Rock Mario
Spring Mario
Boo Mario
And the some I'm missing...

The soundtracks of the Mario Galaxy games are also filled with masterpieces that will make their way in the back of your mind within seconds!

The only bad thing about Mario Galaxy was the dreaded WiiMote+Nunchuck combination!
This made the game much harder that it should've been!
I did ragequit a couple of sessions cause of the stupid aiming/swinging of the WiiMote not being accurate and shooting me to a frustrating death...
God I hated these controllers!

After the 1st hour of Mario Galaxy, I found it mostly annoying and had a hard time finding my way around levels and would've rated the game somewhere around 6/10.

After a couple of hours I got hooked an I even launch the Wii every now and then to play them again!
They're both a 10/10 for me for sure!

@silv3rst0rm: Well I wonder how you would be able to those sections where you point at the blue stars to pull yourself towards them without the Wiimote. It would not work well with dual analog.

@silv3rst0rm: Well, Mario Galaxy 1 sold over 5 million copies I think, so it was really successful. I loved it. Played it so much that I unlocked Luigi. It was probably my favorite Mario since 64 if not more so.

SM64/sunshine/Galaxy HD remasters might be enough to finally make me purchase a Switch. Would love to play MK8 deluxe again as much as I did back on Wii U as well as trying out the battle modes... We'll see later this year when all those promises are delivered. Woud also LOVE a Super Mario RPG remaster/sequel.

Super Mario 64 needs to be Super Mario 64 DS - the additions in that game should NOT be left behind just to pay tribute to the N64 version.

As for Paper Mario - I sincerely hope it's Super Paper Mario 2. I never cared for the other entries, but Super Paper Mario was pure gold. Would drop 60$ day 1 for a sequel to that game.

Who wants GALAXY? That game sucked! Anyway, those Super Mario 64 (1996) environs are timeless on account of their polygonal budget. The amount of noise bound to be introduced by contemporary affordances can only compromise the whole thing. Just look at how ugly Odyssey looks! I now wonder in what other, less obvious ways, might they **** this up? They should just release the original game.

EDIT: Censorship filter? Really, GameSpot? 🤦‍♂️

EDIT2: I reacted as if they had announced remakes, but then noticed the title reads remasters. 😫

@asnakeneverdies: Galaxy games didn't "suck", they are considered to be one of the best, if not _the_ best in the series, they pushed incredible innovation in platforming and anybody who thinks Odyssey is 'ugly', should just quit playing video games for good.

@asnakeneverdies: I def never understood the unrelenting praise Galaxy 1 & 2 got, especially compared to Sunshine, which I adored. I just hope 64 is 64DS... would be lame to go back to only being mario, and losing all the extra stars.

@skyhighgam3r: I played the DS version but never really cared for its additions, Sky. As for the changes, switching characters was a pain and it made the game feel too contrived. As a result, Super Mario 64 DS is not just the original muscle with a bunch of fat on top, but the original flow's compromised too. I also did not care for its higher resolution models.

@skyhighgam3r: For the main reason that we should care about such things, Sky: Availability. That said, I'm not opposed to increased output resolutions, performance improvements, and thoughtful bugfixing. Thoughtful because of the value of certain unintended aspects of games that enhance our ability to express ourselves as players.

@aross2004: Whatever fun there was is overshadowed by disjointed presentation and planetary bottlenecking. If they had it be any more contrived they would've ended up with an on rails shooter. I puke just thinking about it, Aross. 🤮

But hey, that's just my thought on it. But you probably shouldn't hold out hope on a bundle.

@spekk123: Who knows? Maybe they will sell a bundle. But knowing Ninty, it would only be like $5 cheaper then buying them all individually.

The fact that they will probably release at the same time doesn't necessarily mean what you think it does though.

I just want a Sidewinder Mario Game...

I loved New Super Mario Bros Wii & Wii U. But don't enjoy Mario Odyssey as I feel like I play for half an hour and accomplish nothing but going in circles. I want a game with a path & stages.

I would be interested in compilation releases, but not if they're released individually at full price. How about one cart with all the 2D Super Marios, one with all the 2D New Super Marios, and one with all the 3D Marios?

They should treat this like Mario All Stars... all games on one cart... if they release them separately and expect a high price tag for old games then that's a no go...
