Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, And More Reportedly Being Remastered For Switch

Super Mario 64, 3D World, and Sunshine are among several games reportedly coming to Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch is apparently about to get a hefty serving of Mario, including several classic 3D games from the series' past and an all-new role-playing game.

Reported by VGC and Eurogamer, Nintendo is planning to release remastered Switch versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Galaxy as part of the franchise's 35th birthday celebration.

The remastered games would be coming from four different consoles: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World will apparently be a Deluxe Edition with new levels, and a Gematsu report also corroborated that Nintendo has a new Paper Mario game in development. The last Paper Mario game was Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U, which received a mixed reception when it launched just before the Switch in late 2016.

VGC said the new games are due to be announced as Nintendo shares more details on its Universal projects, including theme parks and its Illumination-produced animated Mario film. Plans for E3 announcements changed after the entire event was canceled, so the official news could be coming sooner than initially planned.

Thus far, Nintendo has kept Mario platforming fans busy on Switch with Super Mario Odyssey and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The latter game packs in the New Super Luigi U expansion and a few extra bonus features not found on the Wii U version. Original 2D platformers like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World are also free to play with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Omg just when I think Nintendo cannot amaze me anymore...they go and do this. I’m so stoked because I never got to play sunshine or galaxy.

@basketballfan: I’m still holding out hope that we eventually get a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey. I feel like that game was the true successor to Super Mario 64. I haven’t had that much fun with Mario in a long time.

@kstaggs87: interesting view. I found Odyssey to be absolutely awful. They lied in their marketing by acting like it was open world when it wasn't. I know it is a Mario game but it's difficulty level was severely easy. It was done in a day and a dust collector since.

I'd like Sunshine and 64 to be remastered though.

@irishplusfour: Done in a day? Sounds like you didn't go for every moon. Some of those are brutal, and I've not gotten them all in 50+ hours yet. Saving the princess was a snap, but finishing everything? Not so much.

That's how most Mario games have been for a while, isn't it? The bare minimum is achievable by most, but completion is another story.

I can agree that if they tried to make it look open world that was misleading though; Personally, I'm glad it isn't. Zelda was just kind of tiring for me. Odyssey proved I'm much more fond of the curated spaces approach to level design.

@Tomba42: I did not go for every moon. I'm past my completionist days. Couldn't beat many other 3D Mario games in a day without straining myself though. This one just especially easy.

I prefer the 64 and Sunshine approach to Mario levels. I wouldn't mind something actually open world though as the "Mario world" is pretty creative and fun. Seeing it seamlessly would be a good time. It can't be Breath of the empty Wild open world though, doing it just to say they did but with it being empty.

@irishplusfour: oh wow really? I thought it was wonderful. Yeah I agree it was real easy, but as far as open world...I mean in my opinion it was about as open world as you could get for a Mario game. I thought it was well done though. I do agree that those being remastered with modern graphics would be absolutely amazing though. I guess we shall see what Nintendo does. It would be cool if they offered all those in a compilation pack remastered and called it something like NEW Super Mario All-Stars

@kstaggs87: If it didn't make me catch a balloon to each world and they were connected, I could call it open world. It was more open than the past but I found their statements to be misleading.

Mario All Stars was great. The franchise has a great history, so some sort of collection would be nice but I get the feeling that this is an internet April fool's joke.

@irishplusfour: hopefully the next Mario game will make everything seamless. Maybe Odyssey was just a test run.

@so_hai: I guess “backward changes” is one way to explain Nintendo’s online services. : p

Nintendo does have trophies/ achievements in some games, just not global or is not implemented like how it is in PlayStation 4 and XBOX ONE.

@fortress34: sad to say but yes. i feel at this point in my life i need extra incentive to play these games. i would love to go for a coin{ nintendo could do coins, bronze, silver, gold} i think it would be coolt o beat super mario 64 for example to get 120 starts in lets say 8 hours, just throwing a number out. i would love a switch, but only if nintendo does the right thing

@rodoxthedark: Are you insane? You think they want to put work into this? They will upres the game to 720p and 1080p when docked, sell it to you for $60 and call it a day. Minimal effort for maximum profit.

@hardwenzen: @hardwenzen: they did a pretty good remake of links awakenings and ocarina on 3ds what makes so so sure they won’t do a full remake of one of there best games ever made. So no I’m not insane

I don't know about ocarina on 3ds, but they sure did a good job on links awekenings. But the reason why i think, and would bet money on the fact that these Mario remasters will be lazy, is because for the last year or so, all they've been releasing is remasters of old games, and people are still buying them like its a new game. So why would they put effort into properly remaking a game, when they can do an HD port and know for a fact it will sell? Nintendo's audience is too easy to milk. At this point, they will be doing nothing else but release old ports with 1 new Mario related game per year and that's your lineup until 2025. Not sure how this is exciting to anyone. The others are getting TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, CP2077, just got Doom Eternal, etc etc, while Nintendo gets absolutely nothing else but old shit everyone who cared has already beaten 5-20 years ago. Makes no sense to me. Oh and lets not forget, it will be sold at full price. How much of a joke is that?

@hardwenzen: I just think MARIO 64 was such a great game they will take extra time on it as it’s dated, I agree sunshine will probably get a lazier port as it still looks ok. I think the majority of gamers with a switch do have the other consoles or pc, so like Nintendo for the nostalgia Iv got all 3 pro and x, I do agree they shouldn’t charge full price, which they don’t actually tend to do for simple ports, only the fully reworked titles get full price and they usually have lots of new content, I am enjoying doom though I was insanely lucky to have Rahul kohli buy it for me via twitter!! Couldn’t believe it :)
