Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, And More Reportedly Being Remastered For Switch

Super Mario 64, 3D World, and Sunshine are among several games reportedly coming to Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch is apparently about to get a hefty serving of Mario, including several classic 3D games from the series' past and an all-new role-playing game.

Reported by VGC and Eurogamer, Nintendo is planning to release remastered Switch versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Galaxy as part of the franchise's 35th birthday celebration.

The remastered games would be coming from four different consoles: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World will apparently be a Deluxe Edition with new levels, and a Gematsu report also corroborated that Nintendo has a new Paper Mario game in development. The last Paper Mario game was Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U, which received a mixed reception when it launched just before the Switch in late 2016.

VGC said the new games are due to be announced as Nintendo shares more details on its Universal projects, including theme parks and its Illumination-produced animated Mario film. Plans for E3 announcements changed after the entire event was canceled, so the official news could be coming sooner than initially planned.

Thus far, Nintendo has kept Mario platforming fans busy on Switch with Super Mario Odyssey and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The latter game packs in the New Super Luigi U expansion and a few extra bonus features not found on the Wii U version. Original 2D platformers like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World are also free to play with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Rejoice. We are remaking Mario 64 again. Now no one can complain about "MuH BAd CamERa". It will be great again.

I honestly never got too far into liking Mario Galaxy. It was really cool. But there was something off about it. But whatever they do I hope they make SMG more solid.

This could be a good opportunity for gamers who missed certain great games earlier but as I've played all the ones that I've wanted and I still have them to play with my kids if they want, it will be hard for me to justify purchasing them again (or spending any time on them without my kids) as there are just so many great games out there to play. I rarely get that excited about remakes in general though so perhaps I'm not the target audience. Hope others have lots of fun though.

I'm just a humble nobody gamer, but getting all the green stars in Galaxy 1 + 2 remains to be some of the best quality gaming of my life. Cannot wait to do it again.

Remaster? It won't even be a remaster, but just a slight uprez from 480p to 720p lmao. Then sell it to you for $60. This company is a laughing stock.

@mogan: The Switch is too big to fit in our pockets and yet too small to enjoy the picture, Mogan. Then there's the autonomy... hilarious AF, if you ask me. 🤣

@asnakeneverdies: I'm ok with the screen size, even if it was smaller. I'm far more upset about it not fitting in my pocket when I do go out... then they fix that, but take out the TV support... lol fucking nintendo

@skyhighgam3r: I would go out too, but there's Corona out there floating o'er the corn fields swaying its scythe. It beckons me, but I knows better. 🐍❗

@mogan: By milking their fanbase with lazy cash grabbing remasters. There's a difference between releasing a remaster here and there or just do nothing else but remasters, something they've been doing for a year or more. But when your fanbase is primarily children and non gamers/smart phone *gamers*, why not resell them the same games for full price? Its not like they know any better. Nintendo is disgusting. Almost on par with Activision.

@hardwenzen: they did a pretty good remake of links awakenings and ocarina on 3ds what makes so so sure they won’t do a full remake of one of there best games ever made. So no I’m not insane. Thought since your repeating yourself I would too

@restatbonfire: I'm honestly very interested to see how younger gamers react to it through a fresh lens. It's hard for me to separate my objective feelings about it from that wave of wonder that came with the dawn of 3D gaming.

Ill bet you anything that they will just have the resolution upped. No complaints tho because SMG 1\2 look like Pixar when they are in HD.

Super Mario 64 needs a remake, not a remaster. Super Mario Sunshine might be my most favorite 3D platforming game of all time, so that's great news. Hopefully we get a sequel to that. Never played Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 because I simply refuse to play games with the dreaded Wii controller.

@so_hai: I skipped out on many supposingly good games on the Wii because of that stupid controller, which is a real shame. I never bought a Nintendo console after that again.

@cboye18: Well Im pretty excited that you, and others like you who dont like the wiimote, will be able to bathe in galaxy glory on switch soon (presuming you get one eventually). What I wouldnt give to play through both for the first time again. I envy you.

@cboye18: That controller is a masterpiece of design. Can be held either way, has a pointer, an accelaromater, a built in speaker and long battery life. I'm not say you have to like motion controls, but the wiimote is not "stupid".

And would also buy remasters for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Paper Mario a Thousand Year Door as well.

I hope we get a remaster of Super Mario 64 DS in the future as well. Nintendo giving it proper analog stick controls and higher resolution with cleaner graphics would be great.

Paying $60 for a ten plus years old game that you've already beaten is your dream? What an exciting dream you got there.

@hardwenzen: Great games remain great for years! And fantastic games can be played again after they've been beaten, and still be enjoyed! I don't own it anymore, so it would be nice to have a copy of it again. I hope you find a game that fits that bill for you someday.

@hardwenzen: I could do that, but I also don’t have a wii accessible to me. It’s nice to have updated versions of games I love, available on the console I currently use. I own 2 different copies of Resident Evil 4 that were released 8 years apart.
