Super Mario 2 Headlines Free Nintendo Switch Online NES Games For February

Free is a nice price.

It's a new month, and that means Nintendo Switch Online subscribers are getting even more free classic NES games to play. Available from February 13 will be Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kirby's Adventure, Nintendo has announced.

These follow on from January's new additions, which included Zelda II: The Adventures of Link and Blaster Master in North America. Last month, players in Japan got a third game, Joy Mech Fight, but it's not immediately clear if there is a Japan-exclusive game this month.

The NES library for Switch Online subscribers launched with 20 big-name games, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Dr. Mario, Ice Climber, Metroid, and Donkey Kong. As you can tell from January and the titles coming in February, the catalog is adding some great games.

Nintendo Switch Online costs $4 USD/month or $8 USD for three months. A 12-month subscription goes for $20 USD, while a Family Membership for up to eight Nintendo Account members costs $35 USD for a year. New subscribers can sign up with a seven-day free trial. In addition to free NES games, subscribers get access to cloud saves, and online play for many titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Ultimate.

Nintendo recently confirmed that Nintendo Switch Online had reached 8 million members, and teased that it will "expand" the service. "Nintendo Switch Online has had a good start," president Shuntaro Furukawa said. "In keeping with the goal of providing Nintendo Switch owners with 'More Games. More Features. More Fun,' we are working on continuing to expand the service offerings."

This was my favorite SMB game back in the day. It actually wasn't made to be a Mario game originally, but Nintendo changed the characters. It was originally called Doki Doki Panic in Japan. Most purists didn't like this game, but I loved it.

Hey Eddie, games aren't "free" when you have to actively pay a subscription fee to access them. Free *is* a nice price, but that's not what Nintendo is charging.

@obnice: I've had games to play on Nintendo consoles since the 80s. If you can't find something then I suggest you get a new hobby :)

Doesn’t matter to me since I’m never paying for SMB2 ever again. It’s on my NES Classic, and that’s how I’ll be playing It for at least the next 10 years or until HDMI gets replaced with some next gen 8K or 16K hi res interface.

@ecs33: Because it is considered only REAL in Japan where it was released.

@dinosaur_teeth: That's why it's so fun!

I always thought SM2E was an oddball being so different than the rest of the series. Still a good game though.

@@ecs33: I've never played the original, didn't even know one existed until the other day I watched a video on it...

The difficulty was why it never got released outside of Japan, which makes sense when you consider the player base on the NES were mostly still very young at that time, and maybe not up for the challenge...

The oddity of SM2 makes perfect sense when you realize it was another game that they just added Mario, Peach and Toad into... I have fond memories of it, looking forward to playing it again soon!

I'd be down to try the REAL SM2 though, hopefully Nintendo will put it in with the others (on the Switch)...

@dinosaur_teeth: Don't forget Luigi. He was the super jumper. Princess was floaty and Toad was strong and could rip stuff out of the ground quick (my fav). Mario was just Mario, lol.

They're slowly building the game library, but I wish Nintendo would hurry up and get us a Joy Con with a proper d- pad. The third party ones are...not good.

So wait Nintendo is only gonna give 2 NES games for this month? I'm sorry Nintendo but that cheap as ****. Sony is giving Hitman For Honor and Metal Gear Solid 4 on PlayStation with PS+. Microsoft is giving Crackdown 3 Rise of the Tomb Raider and the Batman Return to Arkham Collection on Xbox with Game Pass. And you are only gonna give 2 NES games? Now granted those 2 NES games are awesome but seriously just 2 Nintendo come Ninty you can do better I KNOW you can.

They aren't free if you're paying for them.

That's not how free works.

@uninspiredcup: Nothing on the internet is truly free since you pay your ISP for internet access. ;)

SM2 US and Kirby's Adventure are two of my favorite NES games, so it's a very nice month for the NES service.

I think I'm going to suck it up and try to best Mario 2 finally. 30 years later, it's long overdue!

Finally a game I truly want to play again, and I always wanted to try an older Kirby.

I'm really happy that we get to play these classics for subscribing to their Nintendo Online Subscription. But it would be nice if they could bring back Virtual Console for SNES, N64, GC, (and if possible Wii) to the Switch,

@freedom01: Is it actually free? Or is it like how Gamespot incorrectly reports that Xbox games are free?

When you have to pay for the subscription and in return for your payment, you receive multiplayer access, discounts and games each month as their deal stipulates.

@gatsbythepig: I never said or mentioned anything about "free", and I'm pretty sure I mentioned about the benefit we get for paying for subscription.

@freedom01: Sorry if it sounded directed toward you as if you were claiming something false. That was not my intention. I was trying to honestly figure out if it was free. Eddie Mackoo has a bad habit, as do the rest of GS, of misinforming people. I don't own a Switch yet and was initially excited by this clickbait... I looked it up(not free).

I agree with your statement 100%, as I have about 20 VirtualConsole games. I gave both of your comments a thumbs up.
