Suicide Squad Game Announced By Batman Developer Rocksteady

The studio behind the Batman: Arkham trilogy has finally unveiled its next project after a five-year wait.

After a five-year wait, Rocksteady Studios, the developer behind the Batman: Arkham trilogy, has announced its next project is a Suicide Squad game. However, don't expect to really know what we'll be doing in the game for a few more weeks, as that information is being kept under wraps.

Rather than opting for any fanfare, the studio simply tweeted out the reveal with an image of Superman (or could that be Bizzaro?) and a Suicide Squad logo. Evidently, we'll know more when DC FanDome kicks off at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Saturday, August 22. The free one-day virtual event is set to showcase what DC has coming up in the future, including The Batman, Zack Synder's cut of Justice League, The Suicide Squad, and now Rocksteady's take on the team of dysfunctional supervillains. Ed Boon, director on Mortal Kombat and Injustice, will also be attending.

Now Playing: Giving Batman: Arkham Origins A Second Chance

The reveal of a Suicide Squad game isn't as surprising as it could have been after a recent report suggested Rocksteady was working on such a project. A cache of registered domain names may also hint at the game's full title and indicate its central idea, with one called "SuicideSquadKillTheJusticeLeague.com." The image Rocksteady has shared may also add some credence to the report. The Suicide Squad logo looks like it's intended to be a crosshair targeting Superman's head, which would fit if the game is indeed about killing off the Justice League.

Not what I wanted for Urban Chaos RP dev, but whatever. I wonder what it is about, because I like Avengers more but they're not enough to make me interested in Destiny-esques.

Rocksteady does good work. I'm not going to be dismayed by the bad Suicide Squad film. I think they'll have a lot of good ideas to bring to the table. I was actually hoping for a Superman game, but this will be good too.

I hope they don't just shove the Joker and Harley front and center again. It's not the Suicide Squad without Rick Flag, Bronze Tiger, Ravan, and The Wall.

@bdrtfm: Obviously you're referencing Avengers/Spider-Man from Crystal Dynamics as a joke but Batman from Rocksteady has had exclusive content in the past. Arkham Knight got exclusive content for PS4 because Sony paid for it. Then the original Arkham Asylum got the Joker bonus content because the PS3 port suffered from performance issues over the 360 version, so it was meant as a sort of apology for PS3 users. Arkham City on Wii U would get bonus costumes for Batman and Catwoman for similar reasons to the AA PS3 issues.

I doubt any version will get exclusive content for this unless MS or Sony pay for it. It was highly rumored MS might buy WB Games division so that could play into things too.

On a positive note, the game has a great chance to be better than the movie.

@donewithgamespot: That's true, but even a piece of crap that accidentally finds its way into the disc drive of a console has a better chance of being better than those movies, so its not a fair thing to say.

Damn, that's ma boy Bizarro.

And for the people who think the game is like the movie, nope not at all. The comic is really good and no woke crap, just grim with dark humor. Just think of Batman Origins but with the Squad.

@donewithgamespot: It was part of it being bad. Will Smith needed to be an ex-gangster black dude with Hip-hop background and behaves like he is straight from the Ghetto, CLICHE. The real Deadshot is an emotionless professional bastard that gives no crap about anything. The movie was filled with cliche and cringe moments. Wokeness was sure a part of it. Look carefully and you will find.

They wanted to check every box marker with this movie, that's why it failed.

@_Shuyin_: Game isn't worth a port. Too bad PS4 doesn't have BC. You can however subscribe to PlayStation™Now with a recurring subscription fee of $9.99 (+ applicable tax) per month.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: And most likely will involve the joker and arkham, and I can imagine the game description being "You experience will inovlve spending a lot of time looking at the suicide squad from batman's perspective, with freeflow combat and gadgets...suicide squad members and superman will not be playable."

There are 2 games Rocksteady has to do next, they can choose. Either a TMNT game similar to Arkham City with all the baddies and a choose your turtle storyline with AI-controlled turtles for specific missions, or a Power Rangers game with the Lord Drakkon storyline, again in the same vein as Arkham City.

A man can dream! =)

@The_PlagueLord: You are a 90s kid arent you? LOL I ask that you go back and watch power rangers just to see how cringy it is as an adult! Both TMNT and power rangers just wouldnt sell in today's climate, they are both exclusively 90s things that will probably never be popular again, its party because they were so ingrained with the 90s culture (esp TMNT) with the 'cowabangas', skateboarding and their very 90s teen personalities that would not work now.

@The_PlagueLord: Fark no to TMNT. The Arkham combat system was cool at first, and it really works for Batman due to his nature as a tool-laden ninja, but TMNT has always been a hardcore brawler, including in the shows themselves. The turtles even make fun of how un-ninja like they are in the show.

And, frankly, I'm so over the Arkham combat system. For all of the stuff they have introduced, the core concept is so simple that you can completely ignore everything new and just focus on the basic principles in every game and still beat them no prob. And the devs clearly knew this given the major new additions to the games weren't even related to the combat system, but things like open world exploration and vehicle combat (I'd love to see them use the tank mechanics for a Blaster Master game. They're perfect for that kind of game).

What TMNT really needs is evolved brawler mechanics. I'm surprised the brawler sub-genre has been stuck as 2D retro games for so long. It seemed like they were making headway there with The Warriors, but since then things have stalled and every new game in that field is either an Arkham rip-off, a 2D retro brawler, or a fighting game.

@mcnichoj: Well then they must have been very low key or as bad as Out of the Shadows because I can't think of any AAA brawlers released in the last 10 years.

*Supposedly stylish action games like Devil May Cry and Godhand "count" as brawlers. They don't really feel like it to me since they're based more on fighter-style combo systems, but sure, I suppose they count. Still interesting to see articles on Brawlers limited to naming just those games and a few others like Dynasty Warriors, then all the 2D stuff.

Not a huge fan of the whole suicide squad thing but this has potential.

Perhaps a storyline intertwined with the more popular comic book heroes (Superman/Batman.) from a different perspective is what Rocksteady Studios needs to in a sense re-invent themselves.

-Re-invent themselves, Ninja? How about a new IP that isn’t comic book related?-

Well, that’s always another option, lol. 😉

Either way it will be good to see them back at it. I know a lot of people were turned off by Batman’s last outing with the developer (That darn Batmobile.) but the trilogy as a whole has been a top-notch franchise. Hopefully they take what worked best from their previous projects and roll them all into one with Suicide squad while adding a bit of flare.

-SUICIDE HELPLINE NINJA APPROVED-
