Styx Xbox One/PS4/PC Sequel Announced With Bigger Budget, New Engine

Shards of Darkness comes to light in 2016.

Last year's stealth game Styx: Master of Shadows is getting a sequel for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game, Styx: Shards of Darkness, is in development at Cyanide Studios and is published by Focus Home Interactive. That's the same developer and publisher behind the 2014 game, which GameSpot scored a 5/10.

For Shards of Darkness, Cyanide is pledging "more ambition" and "bigger ideas," made possible in part by the game's bigger budget compared to the original. In addition, Shards of Darkness runs on a new engine, Unreal Engine 4. Its predecessor was developed using the Unreal Engine 3.

Among other things, players can expect new enemies, environments, and mechanics, including grappling, rope-climbing, and using a knife as a zip-wire.

The game's first screenshot (above) shows a "more nimble, more refined" Styx green goblin. In terms of story, Cyanide said Shards of Darkness will "delve deeper into a more complex narrative and fully realized world." The game is set at least partially in a place called Körangar.

"Following the fall of Akenash tower, an extraordinary matter has forced Styx out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar, the city of the Dark Elves," reads a line from the game's story description. "Supposedly impregnable, a diplomatic summit offers Styx a chance at slipping in unnoticed, as he learns that the event is nothing but a mere facade... Moreover, the Elves have joined forces with the Dwarves, and the only thing both races have in common is a mutual hatred of the Goblins..."

Shards of Darkness has been in development for more than six months. It is due to launch across PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced.

If you're looking to pick up the first Styx game on PC, now is a good time, as Master of Shadows is discounted by 66 percent to $10.19 right now on Steam.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Hah steam, I got my Styx for free with PlayStation Plus. I'm looking forward to the sequel can't believe you scored Styx so low though. I thought it was so much fun.

Cyanide usually poisons their games, making them mediocre and flawed, but Styx seems much better than any other Cyanide game I can remember, so I'm happy it's getting a sequel. With a larger budget and a new engine it might even avoid the few flaws that the Internet said the original game had.

I like the premise: you play as an orc, killing humans

The first one made me think a bit of Hitman, so if they can improve this sequel, I'm definitely interested !

IF they actually fixed the moment, when you get caught to being IN GAME ACTION, rather than the stupid one button mini-game that ensues in the original, I'm interested.

Never played it, the image / theme of the game looks interesting though, I just did not want to pay for it when it came out with a review of 5/10

@Hiraishin: Well, on Metacritic it has a 71 score based on 31 reviews and Gamespot is only one site. What if the other reviewers more accurately align with your own tastes? All it takes is some Let's Play video viewing to find out how the game really is.

I have heard completely mixed reviews about this game. I was interested in it, but so many people say that it's unrefined.

Styx was....okay. I didn't finish it. Got a bit bored looking for an amber well or something. I thought it was going to be more like Thief. I'm sorry Thief wont ever get a sequel now, it was destroyed by mediocre reviews hurting sales. It was actually a good game, but could have been bigger.

If you're of a certain age you can't take this game seriously because, no matter what, when you see the title you start getting "Come sail away" in your head.

The problem with Styx and Orcs and Men wasn't the gameplay, which was passable IMO. The problem stemmed from the horrendous, unbelievably bad dialogue. I made it through the first few hours with every other word being s***, f***, etc... Hoping it would improve, but it only got worse. The dialogue seemed like it was written by a bunch of teenagers who had just discovered cursing and thought it was edgy and grown up. It was so jarring after the first few hours I couldn't take it anymore. Orcs and Men was the worst, but Styxx wasn't much better.

@SerOlmy: If that's the worst you can say about them, then I'll definitely get those games some day, at a heavily discounted sale. Although, I don't know if the dialogue is hilariously bad or just plain, tediously bad.

This game has potential, a bit more innovation and this can be a great stealth game.

@camou504: I really liked this game but I do think most of the complaints about it are accurate. 5 seems low, but I'm not one to blast reviewers over game scores. If you like serious stealth games (combat is always a bad idea here) then pick it up cheap on Steam.

@camou504: Its a very good stealth game but its not for everyone since its rather hardcore. Fighting more than one dude at a time is usually a bad idea and some enemies like knights cant be killed in combat(they one shot you). If you like stealth games then its at least 7-8/10.

@camou504: Hell no, don't believe the review for this game. Especially when the reviewer was complaining about the combat in a stealth game. This game is awesome.

@camou504: Not remotely. It goes on a bit too long, and re-uses a few of the same environments by making you backtrack some places (and not in a good way). It's a stealth game that requires a lot of patience. You can't really take enemies head on, and the combat is so awful anyway that you really should be putting it on the hardest difficulty where you fail if your caught. But there are plenty of tools at your disposal, and some large environments to test your brain on. The story itself is entertaining enough to want to see more of, but the main character is great, and his narration is very nicely written.
