Study: Video games may improve vision

First-person shooters singled out for potential therapeutic benefits.

Video games have racked up their fair share of controversy over the years, with some saying that they desensitize people to violence, others claiming they warrant their own health warning labels, and yet others labeling them a public health threat.

However, there are also a number of studies that extol the positive effects of games. Researchers at the University of Rochester in New York have announced findings claiming that playing games, specifically those oriented around action, improve contrast sensitivity function (CSF); that is, the ability to detect subtle differences in shades of grey.

While the same researchers had previously found that games improved visual acuity and peripheral vision, the ability to improve contrast sensitivity is significant, given that it was previously held among the scientific community that it could not be improved. CSF ability is often affected by old age or amblyopia--commonly known as lazy eye. Previously, it was possible to ease the symptoms only with glasses or surgery, rather than address the root cause by improving the performance of the eye itself.

The research focused on 13 individuals split into two groups playing video games for a total of 50 hours over nine weeks. One group was given action games, including Call of Duty 2 and Unreal Tournament, whilst the other played non-action games, which do not require such precise gameplay actions, such as The Sims.

Those in the action group showed a 43 percent improvement in CSF compared to those in the non-action group, whose average was 11 percent. More startlingly, the effect was said to last for months, even after the games themselves had stopped being played.

Researcher Daphne Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, was understandably pleased with the results of the study. "Video game training...may become a useful complement to eye-correction techniques that are routinely used in the clinic to improve eyesight," she said. However, she also noted that "not all video games induce such a benefit, calling for special care in the choice of a clinically relevant training regimen."

It always warms my heart to see that playing video games have a positive effect. How may here remember when they were blaming video games for murders, violence etc?

I have an extreme lazy eye but I noticed that it became less lazy after playing fps, expecially call of duty 4, I also noticed that my cordination and reflexes had increased. So I think theres something true about this study.

Well, I can't say that I disagree with this. I've definitely noticed I have quicker reactions, notice smaller details, and can think faster on my feet. I play CoD 4 + 5, medal of honor, and those types but I think CoD 4 helps the most because its the fastest paced and requires the most attention. I fully agree with this study.

This is weird. This study was conducted about 2 or 3 years ago. I used it in my research paper earlier this school year. GameSpot's a little behind in the news it seems....

my over playing of video games the past few years has made me near-sighted. thats not an improvement when I used to have 13/20 vision before, maybe its an unjust relationship I'm making but I have my reasoning. I knew they said something about it improving peripheral vision and ability to track multiple moving objects in your field of view at a time and yea that may be handy but I never used to have a problem viewing the tv guide from the dinner table before gaming 8+ hours a day.. It could be deterioration with age but I think its my bad habits.

Yeah, my view of certain things have become blurry after all the years I've played games, but there is no denying that it has helped me with hand-eye coordination and being able to distinguish things--key stuff to have when playing FPS and action games. It's also helped me improved my driving skills some, like not hitting the gas so hard when accelerating, or taking a certain line when turning. Of course, you can't run red lights or stop signs like you could in any GTA or Saints Row games, especially since you see drivers cannonball out of windshields in SR2--a real-life lesson there.

the only thing i know games had REALLY helped me in my day to day life are my reflexes -like any action gamer- and my driving skills... even when i usually play racing games in a recless style -except GT3 /GT4- i have noticed that i use some driving techniques when i'm driving for real... taking the line in corners, driving the momentum instead of braking or acelerate to have the best control at the higger possible speed and things like that. I'm pretty much sure than appart of improve reflexes and shove in your hear the correct way to drive a car, plating some kind of games can help a person to correct some diseases... i think,

9 weeks with 50 hours is only 1.26 hours a day. Don't gamers spend an average of 2-3 hours playing a day? Also, 13 individuals split into two groups? Completely worthless "study."

standing in front of any screen for any prolonged amount of time is damaging to your eyesight. My prescription certainly isn't getting any better. Yea it may improve your peripheral vision and ability to see things in motion but your ability to see clearly will take a hit.

I've known that video games have positive benefits for years, they're a huge help with my fighting my disability. It's amazing that they have to spends money that really can't be afforded to find out something that they could research by just asking and monitoring gamers for free.

this article isn't saying videogames give you 20/20 vision, it's saying that action oriented games, such as fps's can improve your ability to see contrast (distinguish between different shades of gray). It won't make your vision more "clear" and give you perfect eyesight.

that maybe is true because i wear glasses and went to check my eyes a year ago and then some of the good fps shooters came out and i started playing them. after 7-8 months of playing i went to check on my eyes again and the doctor said that my vision improved by 6%. but i thought it was me growing up.

I don't know what bull**** study they did but it's all lies. My vision has actually decreased from playing video games. I'm not bashing video games cause of course I enjoy playing them but common really? I think anybody can justify that video games doesn't help your vision lol. Staring for a couple hours a day at your tv won't give you 20/20 vision.

does it really have so much to do with video games? seems to me any activity that you would track a lot of motion would have the same effect. Although, Call of Duty does have a billion different shades of gray.
