Study: Video games may improve vision

First-person shooters singled out for potential therapeutic benefits.

Video games have racked up their fair share of controversy over the years, with some saying that they desensitize people to violence, others claiming they warrant their own health warning labels, and yet others labeling them a public health threat.

No Caption Provided

However, there are also a number of studies that extol the positive effects of games. Researchers at the University of Rochester in New York have announced findings claiming that playing games, specifically those oriented around action, improve contrast sensitivity function (CSF); that is, the ability to detect subtle differences in shades of grey.

While the same researchers had previously found that games improved visual acuity and peripheral vision, the ability to improve contrast sensitivity is significant, given that it was previously held among the scientific community that it could not be improved. CSF ability is often affected by old age or amblyopia--commonly known as lazy eye. Previously, it was possible to ease the symptoms only with glasses or surgery, rather than address the root cause by improving the performance of the eye itself.

The research focused on 13 individuals split into two groups playing video games for a total of 50 hours over nine weeks. One group was given action games, including Call of Duty 2 and Unreal Tournament, whilst the other played non-action games, which do not require such precise gameplay actions, such as The Sims.

Those in the action group showed a 43 percent improvement in CSF compared to those in the non-action group, whose average was 11 percent. More startlingly, the effect was said to last for months, even after the games themselves had stopped being played.

Researcher Daphne Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, was understandably pleased with the results of the study. "Video game training...may become a useful complement to eye-correction techniques that are routinely used in the clinic to improve eyesight," she said. However, she also noted that "not all video games induce such a benefit, calling for special care in the choice of a clinically relevant training regimen."

A study based on just 13 people doesn't hold much validity in my book. My eyesight seems the same overall, although the level of eye strain I'm experiencing has increased over the years. I used to be able to play for hours on end before feeling the effects, now I can barely last 45 minutes before my eyes feel like they are about to turn into jello.

lol,yea whatever aint that what glasses are for,i have experienced eye strain from playing counter strike online 7/10 hours straight, back in the day but then i would expect that, common sense i suspose, improved vision? i doubt the gaming industry will be shouting from the roof tops about this, there many health issues associated with the industrty as a whole, further tests would be required to be conclusive.

I used to wear glasses as a kid, but one day, the Doc said, "You won't be needing these anymore." I could never figure out what fixed my short-sightedness, but right around that time is when I started playing video games... Correlation or causation?

It is nice to see some positive media coverage on video games, even if it is purely theoretical. I have been playing them casually for about a decade and a half, but my vision has actually remained the same. I have had no need for eye-wear, nor any foreign objects to improve my vision. At the very least, video games do not damage every person that enjoys them.

I have been playing games for nearly 10 years and my vision has gotten worse. I'm now short sighted but it is partly genetic.

Vision problems develop by themselves, the strain of watching a light source by several hours its in no way related to any condition a person may have, and it has about the same consequences of a session of exercises. Eye problems are usually caused by a genetic disposition, deficiency or even bad eating habits. I've been playing videogames since I was 5, and at my 19 I have a 20/20 vision. Although I have my doubts that videogames can develop vision efficiency, it's known and proved by now that videogames don't harm the vision, and even help develop reflects and perception.

So if all of us gamers stopped playing all day and just did it for an hour our vision would improve? Gimme a break.

People who keep saying this article is BS should think about it this way. 50 hours in 9 weeks = 79 minutes a day. That's 1h and 20mins. The average time (per day) a person plays games is about 1 hour. Most, if not all the people saying they have bad eye sight due to gaming say they play "all the time" or at leaast very often. So yes, staring at a screen for too long in one session IS bad for you, that's your fault. The study shows that playing for the average time (1 hour a day) does in fact improve vision in more ways that one. Sitting too close to the screen or playing for way too long will damage you eyes, but that's not what the study is saying. Also, like others have said... it's the faster paced games such as those in the action genre that help the most.

I really don't believe this either. My vision was fine when I was little, right when I got into hardcore gaming is when my vision went in the toilet.

From what I see, the article isn't saying that gamers get improved vision over non-gamers, it says action gamers get improved vision over non-action gamers. I know for a fact that gamers get worst vision than non-gamers. I'm living proof.

the article says they only played games for 50 hours over 9 weeks. that's about 48 minutes a day. eye strain was probably not an issue. also, 13 is a small sample size.

Well, you gotta have good vision when camping on the helo pad steps of Calypso Casino! Can't just look through a scope when watching four places at once (Right Repel, Left Repel, Middle Stairs, and Car Wash depending on the position)

i would have to say that playing video games has made my eysight worse but has made my hand-eye co-ordination shoot through the roof. we did a test in the science lab to study reaction times (the old catch the ruler test) and i actually caught the end of the ruler before it went through my hand. it happened 20 times. and stratergy games have given me an edge in W40k tabletop gaming :)

I've spent more time on the computer and playing video games this year than I ever have, and it seems to be hurting my eyes instead of helping. I still have "perfect" vision according to the eye doctor, but I have a lot of eye strain and there's always a blur. My eyes miss words in the middle of sentences and I can't seem to read as fast anymore either. Not sure if that has anything to do with all the reading I do online and the games I play, but I'm guessing it does.

However, she also noted that "not all video games induce such a benefit, calling for special care in the choice of a clinically relevant training regimen." video games, for the most part, have damaged my vision, i believe, but mainly because i only play a minimal amount of FPS. this article, to me, actually explains a lot, as FPS sometimes have hurt my eyes, in terms of focusing properly, which usually means i need a break but still, i think its after all these years of playing lots of 2D RPGs or just flat games with lots of reading in general. (ughh, paragraphs never seem to form for me on these comments, gg gamespot) still tho, studies in generally are almost always biased, so its best to take this all with a grain of salt.

Despite my 20/450 vision, my eye doc says I always do extremely well with peripheral vision tests, my eyes dont get any worse, and my eyes look healthy as though I havent been wearing contacts for the last 18 years. Interesting study, although not enough people testing it. I'm sure they wouldnt have to try hard to find extra volunteers to play games, am I right? :)

Awesome news, I have always wondered why when I visit the eye doctor every year he says my vision has not declined at all, but since I am extremely near-sighted (like 20/200 in each eye) that is very surprising to him. Apparently most people with my terrible vision get worse off every few years while mine seems to stay the same.
