Studio's Closure Leads to an Unusual Split for Its Many Franchises
Renegade Kid splits up.
Renegade Kid, the indie developer behind games like Mutant Mudds and Dementium: The Ward, has announced it's shutting down. In its place, its two co-founders will form their own studios, with one taking Renegade Kid's 2D games and the other taking its 3D games.
The announcement was made in a press release posted on Renegade Kid's website today. Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove said they "have made the difficult decision to bring their 10-year partnership of developing games together as Renegade Kid LLC to an end." The statement makes the breakup sound amicable, stating they are making the move with "their friendship and respect for each other still very much intact."
In the wake of this, Watsham has founded Atooi, which will obtain Renegade Kid's 2D games, including Mutant Mudds and Treasurenauts. Hargrove's Infitizmo gets its hands on the 3D games, such as Moon Chronicles and Dementium.
Dementium was Renegade Kid's first game back in 2007, with the studio going on to make a total of 14 titles. These were all over the place in terms of genre; Dementium was a horror game, while others were platformers or first-person shooters. Many of these were for DS and 3DS, though some--like Mutant Mudds and Xeodrifter--made it to other platforms, including PC, PS3, PS4, Vita, and Wii U.
