Now Playing: Street Fighter 5 - Video Review

Capcom has detailed its financial results for the 12-month period spanning April 2015 to March this year, reporting an increase in sales and profit. This, in large part, is due to strong performance of its digital re-releases and DLC content.

The Japanese company's net sales reached $714 million, which represents a 20 percent increase over the same period in its previous financial year. Operating income was $111 million, a 13 percent increase over the previous year.

PlayStation 4 and PC title Street Fighter V has been added to the company's list of Platinum sellers, with sales listed as 1.4 million units across both platforms. In a statement accompanying its figures, Street Fighter V was described as a "perennial favorite and maintained steady sales mainly overseas."

In May 2015, prior to Street Fighter V's release, Capcom said it expected the game to sell 2 million copies by the end of the current fiscal year. This figure included copies sold digitally and through traditional brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Based on its own internal projections, Street Fighter V has underperformed.

Digital sales of its games have become a big source of revenue for the company, which re-released Resident Evil 0 Remastered for current and last-generation consoles, as well as PC. Monster Hunter X's digital sales were cited 3 million units, which Capcom described as "overwhelming." The 3DS title "helped to improve business performance overall."

Monster Hunter Explore for Android and iOS has also proved to be popular, with downloads surpassing 3 million.

Looking ahead, Capcom indicated it will "will promote its profitable digital download sales, in addition to package products that have limited sales runs." In terms of game releases, it highlighted Sengoku Basara Sanada Yukimura-den, Resident Evil Umbrella Corps, Ace Attorney 6, and Monster Hunter Stories.

After all the griping, you'd think it sold less than 500,000. Not bad, Street Fighter.

Capcom's extreme greed with SFV hurt the sales.

this game deserves to fail just like companies that made it exclusive.

SF5 is such a great game. I can't stop hacking away at it. Someday I might even be good at it!

Don't blame anyone not into the competitive play for staying away do to lack of content. It's just a little frustrating to think how much better it would have went if Capcom hadn't screwed up so much at launch.

Avatar image for angrycreep

@Wolfkcing: They have improve the game a lot since launch but the game is still incomplete and they still have to add more things like Arcade mode. The game was so bad when it came out that it was the worst street fighter game that I have ever played. The game looks like it was only 65% complete when it came out. It was also the lowest rated Street Fighter game ever review.

I do not know, is there still an install base large enough for the fighting genre anymore?? Even if there is, many have moved on to other franchises like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur and the millions of japanese offshoots that are more in depth and offer less clothing.

The fighting genre fans have also changed- many have migrated to the online shooters, bro games, or phone app that offers the same twitch based combat against others. 2 Million in todays market - is hard pressed. I am sure even with 1.5 million sales the game made its money back, not as if it was under years of development with a huge developer staff. There is also the fatigue of this IP (street fighter) were Capcom has serialized it to death, gave it the mega man spit and polish treatment till it just feels tired year after year.

I really liked street fighter back 25yrs ago, but now. If i was Capcom, i would work on bringing fresh new IPs to market, with new concepts. OR releases a resident Evil game with a good story. Hell with Renaissance of rpg coming back - and so much interest and love for the genre - a reboot of the breath of fire series, Okami - would help. You can bring back some old favorites .. but you got to do it all in and not half ass.

@jenovaschilld: Would love to see a Street Fighter plat-former that has the player jumping and fighting obstacles to progress through a level. Something a kin to Double Dragon but on a more confined 2D plane similar to Viewtiful Joe.

Yea maybe you guys shouldn't have gimped big time on the game and limited it to just two platforms, it would've done better...hopefully Capcom learns an important lesson from this.

Sorry to break it to you Capcom but people are on to your greedy schemes. We've been screwed over enough by you and we've had enough. I know I have.

Disgusting that dumb people buying their scam DLC is keeping this company afloat. They deserve to die.

Avatar image for Artwark

Well, that's that. We will never see another Street Fighter game ever again.

Capcom has stated that if an IP doesn't sell 2 million, that IP is gone for good.

We'll miss you Street Fighter. :(

@Artwark: Yes, but its not like they pulled it from the market...the game will still sell over time and maybe eventually hit that mark. It's at 1.4 million right now.

@jerjef: Nope, it's a console exclusive for the PS4, has the game also hit Xbox One, it would hit that 2m mark.

lol no surprise that the one console only half finished game under performed what did they expect?

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

Street Fighter V is a great game, from a gameplay perspective, at least. But, it deserved to underperform, given the state in which Capcom and Sony launched it. Still, 1.4 million is much better than the 500,000-700,000 copies some observers estimated Capcom sold.

I think Street Fighter V will be this generation's premier fighting game once the season one content is out.

Avatar image for jerjef
jerjef

@IceJester45: Yeah and what's up with the sales? Some sites are saying it's 1.4 million shipped. VGChartz, I know I know, but still it's saying only 690,000 sold. That's quite a difference. Which is it?

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@jerjef: Either shipped, or digital sales could have pushed SFV over 1 million, I suppose.

I would trust Capcom's quarterly report over VGChartz, though.

Avatar image for deactivated-5afeea4d8be41

@IceJester45: VGChartz isn't overly reliable, but digital sales on PS4 and therefore all the PC sales won't be counted so it's probably about right.

Avatar image for jerjef
jerjef

@IceJester45: Well certainly quarterly reports have to be honest and accurate as they can get into a lot of trouble for lying on them, but there's more than one site using the "shipped" term. Selling it to the retailer isn't the same as selling to the consumer.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@jerjef: Yeah, I know there's a difference. Either way, I was expecting much lower numbers.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@IceJester45: @jerjef Capcom's press release says "sales" too. I'd go with that.

Avatar image for jerjef
jerjef

@IceJester45: Cool. I've been trying to find it online, do you have a link?

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@jerjef: I don't right now because I'm on my mobile. GameSpot really should link to the financial report.

You can find the news release, full report and all of Capcom's previous quarterly and annual reports on the company's investors' page.

Bought this day 1 and quickly sold it. I was disgusted with the lack of content. It felt so unfinished.

Never again i'm buying another street fighter game day 1. Capcom are ruining their own franchises with stupid decisions.

Avatar image for angellc

The big problem is that they released half a game and then say, here is your 30 dollar season pass to get more characters and stages that should have been there free, unlockable content without even using that stupid fight money!!!! The visuals are also lacking hard on the PS4 compared to the PC and with these type of visuals, the PS4 should handle it no sweat with max settings and all the post-process effects turned up.

Only fighting game I'd ever care about is Smash Bros. That game is far easier to learn but still difficult to master.

Avatar image for fanboyman

@cboye18: I always felt Street Fighter was easier than Smash, maybe that's because I've been playing SF longer?

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@fanboyman: Motion fighters will forever be more complicated than Smash, which all moves are executed with directions.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a1d4b615a3a3

So the title that Capcom wouldn't fund themselves because it struggles has struggled. Who would of guessed that?

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@pspearman: More like, "Capcom didn't want to fund themselves." The company could have developed Street Fighter V solo if its leadership wanted to. It's just that Capcom has little faith in the franchise, and that's been true for a long time.

So much for that exclusive being the end all of exclusives. I really think the fighting game genre has taken a dive. It used to be my favorite game type when I was younger, but now I won't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I expect even less sakes from KOF

Avatar image for alien33

@BillJr106: Yeap, all my favorite console games back in the 90s were beat'em'ups (Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Killer Instinct etc). In the past 14-15 years the only fighting game I have bought and played was MK9!

Unfinished beta of a game, no wonder it would underperform.

Avatar image for fullyskully

Maybe if the game was put on a certain xbox they would've reached that goal. Hope Sony's "exclusivity" deals money covered that.

stv also underperformed as a finished product as well. the core mechanics and foundation there is solid, but the lack of content must have turned some people away (a meaty single player story mode was missing, etc.). as it stands now, only the most hardcore players are spending time with sfv. the more casual crowed has no reason to leave sfiv.

Avatar image for alien33

Was SFV a really huge step up from IV?

I mean if you compare the original game with SFII, then II with 3rd Strike, then 3rd with IV, the games look, feel and play very different from each other. Now compare IV to V... the evolution IS there, but is not enough to give it a unique look.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a5f623fa2551

@alien33: From a gameplay standpoint, Street Fighter V is substantially different from Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Avatar image for Jimbowesker

Maybe if SFV would have came with more characters and content, sales would be better. I hate to hear this cuz I am enjoying SFV, though I will admit it was a little bare at launch. Maybe the big story update coming up and the Year 2 characters will launch SFV's profits. I only hope so cuz I am a fan of both Capcom and the SF franchise.

Avatar image for brn-dn

Wow, who would have thought a game launching with no content would underperform?

Avatar image for BabeNewelll

@brn-dn: rather have quality content than all the lame content in MKX , which is such a poor game gameplay wise in comparison.
