Street Fighter 5 Introduces Ads, People Don't Like It

Ads have arrived.

[UPDATE] Right on schedule, Capcom updated Street Fighter V's Arcade Edition today with ads. The advertisements on stages, character outfits, and loading screens, are switched on by default, but you can toggle them off in the Battle Settings menu.

As you probably might have guessed, the Street Fighter subreddit is awash with criticism of the newly launched ads. People are suggesting it's a slippery slope, and creating mock-up images that show things like sponsored headgear from McDonald's and Mtn Dew skins. Some people are speculating that the introduction of ads in Street Fighter V is actually a test for launching a free-to-play version of the game. This is only speculation, of course, but it'll be interesting to see if Capcom responds to the feedback around ads in Street Fighter V. Keep checking back for the latest.

The original story is below.

Capcom is trying something new on the business side for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. The publisher announced that the game is adding optional "sponsored content" on December 11, and it will come in the form of advertisements to tell you about the Capcom Pro Tour competitive gaming event, content bundles for the game, and extra costumes you can buy.

The ads will show up in "several locations" throughout the game, including loading screens, tournament stages, and even on characters themselves. Specifically, characters will now have a new "Ad Style" option that will display sponsored content on clothing or the character model itself. The ads on stages, meanwhile, will display sponsored content in clear sight. And the loading screen ads are exactly what they sound like; Capcom clarified that the loading screen with ads enabled won't be longer than when they're disabled.

The important thing here is that these ads are entirely optional. If you do decide to view the ads, you'll be rewarded with extra Fight Money (the game's currency) when you play Ranked and Casual matches. There is an upper limit on the Fight Money payouts, however, though Capcom did not say what it is.

Capcom's blog post suggests that the sponsored content functionality is switch on by default. It can be toggled off in the Battle Settings menu. You can choose to only see ads where you want them, too; so you could choose to only see the costume ads or the stage and loading screen ads. Go to Capcom's blog post to learn more.

As Gamasutra reminds us, advertisements in games is nothing new, but what's notable here is that Street Fighter V is not a free-to-play game. Still, it is not unprecedented for full price games to feature ads. EA's FIFA franchise displays well-known global brands on the sidelines. Additionally, back in 2008, Barack Obama's campaign spent money to buy ads in 18 different video games, and he eventually went on to win the Presidency that year.

Most major video game publishers are looking at ways to make more money from games in new ways, and in-game advertising is just one of those ways, alongside microtransactions.

Ads in Street Fighter V launch on December 11, and it will interesting to see how players react. We also don't know yet what other gaming or non-gaming brands might sign up to put ads in Street Fighter V. Another question some may be asking is if Capcom is adding ads to Street Fighter V to make up for how it failed to reach Capcom's sales targets.

The sad reality is that big companies (at least their Execs) would want us to continuously pay for games.

1) Purchase price

2) "Full game" (DLC / Season Pass) price

3) Eventually, log-in price after point #1

Believe me, if it was really just for them, they'd steal every single remaining cent off of your bank account for just one of their game if they could and was legal. There's no such thing as "enough money" from our gamer / consumer in their mind (heck, there's simply not such thing in general). To them, "buying a game" doesn't exist. You simply and merely have the right to play it, regardless of the amount of money involved. And, in their ideal world, you would have the right to play it only if you could continuously throw money at their face every day, non-stop until death. Every single one of their game is perceived by them like the next milestone in human civilization and everyone should give millions each for it because it's that good.

I'd go as far as saying that money addiction is a full on neurological / pathological disorder in exactly the same veins as substances addiction. It should be treated and people affected by it should seek aid. Unfortunately, it's not taken seriously ("Pfff how can anyone possibly be addicted to money and profits? Nonsense"). It's just a question of time and generations. Things will change eventually. But in the meantime we're stuck with sociopaths running those companies, and they'll keep telling their dev teams that everything they do is "Below Expectations" and that selling the game to half of the damn world isn't enough. Those big company Execs truly live in their own bubble, self-conceived realities and will never accept anything below their unrealistic desires.

This is just a taste of what's to come in video gaming in the near future. At some point I predict those companies will ensure that all their games will have to be payed-to-be-played every single damn time you have to log in to your account to access the rights to play it. It won't be monthly, it will be a daily purchase of the game. It WILL go that far because there are NO regulations about this currently in the video gaming industry. It's the far west, it's free for all. They do what they want because no one with actual power to impose laws and monitoring bodies is doing anything about it.

In short, they do this shit, because they can. And it works.

If this was f2p this would be alright.

Just looks greedy and cheap as hell to have this added to a game that people paid money for.

as long as it doesn't block me from playing it and keep me "x-ing" the ads, then i'm okay with it.

The ads look forced and unnatural.

Sure, Balrog would wear ads on his gloves because he's a bad boy who loves money. But Ryu most certainly would not.

This is terrible and wrong.

A free 2 play model would have been better imo like Killer Instinct , brings in new players , existing players keep all the fighters etc etc

You can turn it off, and yet people are still crying? If the ability to turn it off goes away, then people can yell all they want.

This is just the beginning. I won't be at all surprised if, in a few years' time, we start to see full on video adverts playing every 20 mins as we game.

I have pondered about the profitability of a game releasing for free with in game advertisements with paid DLC (not loot boxes)... This sort of thing already happens on a minor scale though like Need For Speed 2014 they were drinking Monster Energy like beer in a lot of cutscenes, Nissan ads in Quantum Break, Pot Noodle in FFXV and Uncharted did a sub way tie in once.

I am a Street Fighter & Capcom supporter through and through and am not necessarily against the ads or any of their recent updates, but cannot help but feel like they are both a huge waste of space my hard drive when the game is updated and they just seem irrelevant. Capcom surely knows the players aren't awaiting Ads or Dojo content, but how about some news on Season 4 characters or stages? That would be great instead of these updates that just seem to throw everyone into a frenzy. Don't get me wrong, I love SFV and I think its a great fighting game no matter what the sales might say, but yeah, come on Capcom.....

@lionheartssj1: 70+ characters that are a huge pain to unlock. And you are forced to wait for the cold down to reattempt them in Challenger's approach. Restarting the game does not work.

@neurogia: I unlocked almost all of them by doing the story mode, which I was going to play through that mode anyway, so it wasn't an issue for me. There's a Gamespot article that outlines the easiest ways and classic mode may have been shortest method. I'm merely pointing out the huge amount of content you get with Smash vs. SFV, where it was bare bones at launch and all the extra characters were locked behind a paywall or "fight money", which is a convoluted way of forcing you to grind or watch ads now, apparently.

@asmoddeuss: It's a modified version of the WiiU game, even confirmed by Masahiro Sakurai himself when he said there's 20,000 changes or whatever.

Also, there are only 4 or 5 brand new stages out of the 103 that are offered.

It's not a slippery slope.

You have taken over 60 bucks from me already. How much more money do you want?

You sold me 2 season passes, totalling over 60 bucks as well.

You've introduced lootboxes, as well as a stupid dojo system to try and sell me decorative items.

How much more money do you need to get out of this game?

@lucidique: I'm not trying defend spending $60 on a game and get free updates and new content forever, but is this really different than what they have done in the past when you have to re-buy the entire games just to get the latest content? I haven't bought season 3 neither, but at least I can still play the game in the same pool with everyone without re-buying "Super EX Ultra SFV alpha".

@papabeer24: Capcom's plan for the game weren't any clearer than they are now. I have no regrets for buying into the content the way i did.

In hindsight, there is no way you saw any of this coming, any more than any of us did.

Take this for what it's worth.

@neurogia: I agree with neuria. Since street fighter x tekken in game locked dlc and coming to find out dragon's dogma did the same. Forget the fact it was dlc for a moment this was already in the game!!! Meaning this content existed in the game they locked it to charge later. Then data miners discover this and unlocked it to manys surprised people got banned for things they purchased on their disc. Nah man you take it for what is worth liquid.

Have some integrity, people -- or at least some balls.

UNINSTALL.

It only takes a second, and costs you nothing.

If you have a couple more minutes, send them a msg or two on social media, and then block Capcom on each platform. Report any emails of theirs as spam.

This is the ONLY way to get their attention. It worked with EA.

@Pyrosa: That's right. I fear this is a test run. I've already stated on a few MHW pages that if they try and put ads on the loading screens for the coming expansion next year I will not buy it. I won't support a game with ads. The internet has become bad enough. It's also proven that $59.99 is plenty to support a games development cost, with profit. So long as developers don't over do the budget crazy like. These ads are fueled by greed, nothing more, nothing less.

Interesting. One would have thought that the failure of this practice in Dead to Rights 2 and Spider-man: Web of Shadows (and others but I didn't play those games) would have been seen as a reason not to do this again.

A terrible practice and terrible idea that the big companies are seeing to test the waters as to see how the consumer responds. If successful this will be implemented into all your games.
