Steam's Movie Catalog Expands With Hunger Games, Twilight, Saw, and Many More

Valve teams up with Lionsgate to bring dozens and dozens of movies to the gaming platform.

Half-Life developer Valve's PC store Steam has added a series of new movies from film company Lionsgate, including entries in the Hunger Games, Twilight, Saw, and Divergent franchises. The movies come to Steam as a result of a new partnership between Lionsgate and Valve that was announced today.

There are 69 Lionsgate films available now on Steam to rent, starting at $4, while there will be more than 100 added to the program eventually. In addition to films from the big-name franchises mentioned above, the new movie Sicario and classics like Pulp Fiction, Requiem for a Dream , and The Blair Witch Project are also there.

You can see a list of all of the Lionsgate movies on Steam here.

Lionsgate executive Jim Packer said Steam, with its 125 million users, "represents a unique, exciting, and disruptive opportunity to expand our global distribution business."

For its part, Valve's Doug Lombardi said Lionsgate is an "important content supplier" because of its catalog of "blockbuster franchises and commercially exciting, star-driven event films."

Movies sold on Steam work with all supported platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, and even in virtual reality using SteamVR.

Steam is best known for gaming, but has relatively recently expanded into new markets, including film and non-gaming software. These Lionsgate movies aren't the first for Steam, as all of the Mad Max films are currently available on the platform, along with anime movies in the Naruto and Bleach series.

Steam isn't the only gaming store that offers movies, either, as GOG.com also does.

lol what a joke. who does valve think they are? sony? it is too late to turn stream into a multiple media service. how about they instead focus on getting all those shitty greenlight and early access games off stream eh? what a mess that will be to clean up :D

A good idea poorly executed. Why would anyone pay $4 for one movie when they could pay $6 more and get thousands? Unless they offer to sell each movie for $1 - $2 i honestly think people would rather use torrents or netflix. I hope they lower the prices because i really like the idea of having my favorite movies, shows, cartoons and anime in my steam library ready to stream or download to any device i have steam installed on.

PC Gamers don't want movies on Steam. Keep Steam game content only. I knew once Indie game the movie was puttted on there this would hapend. Hollywood is ruining the gaming industree. This is also a ploy for the govt to come in and take over steam. Watch paid mods will comeback and destroy everything. I'm moving to consoles where I don't have to worry about this obvious attempt by the business man tries to ruin my hobby.

Call me crazy but if I'm going to pay to own a movie I'd much rather own the DVD/Blu Ray copy to have on a shelf. The same goes for music.

@NoahRoalson: That's what we said about games too. Netflix, this, and the rest of similar offers seem to say otherwise.

@TheFroggynator: I'm okay paying Netflix for a subscription because there is enough content, in my opinion, to justify the price. With games, it's a mixed bag. I love getting them cheap digitally but if the physical copy is still close to digital price, or just slightly more, that's what I'll opt for.

@NoahRoalson: From what I see on Google, Lionsgate films are no longer available on Netflix and, Netflix seems to be getting away Hollywood films and making Netflix Films and Shows. It's just one studio on Steam, but imagine if they get as many as Xbox Video, Google Play, or iTunes.

@Die_Bahn: yeah, i think netflix realised that streaming third party films is a really crowded market place. it's competitive, realtively easy to set up, difficult to create a USP and hence i guess the margins are low. that's why their model now focuses on exclusive content...

@Die_Bahn: I agree. It has potential to grow.

@NoahRoalson: I am doing the same. I still buy some games in physical format, but mostly digital, because shelve space is limited and I don't wanna fill my entire house with games anyway. That's what I do with books, games, music. Why not doing it with movies too?
