We already know the top-grossing games on Steam in 2016, but which games were played the most? GitHyp, which tracks the service's most-played games, has published its report for 2016 (via Kotaku), revealing that Valve games were the most popular on the platform and no game released in 2016 cracked the top five.

When looking at the number of players per hour, Valve's free-to-play DOTA 2 was No. 1, picking up a reported 636,607 average players per hour during 2016. Rounding out the top five for the year were Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (360,600), Team Fortress 2 (50,802), Grand Theft Auto V (40,258), and Civilization V (37,885). You can see the full Top 5 chart below, which includes comparisons to 2015.

Steam always means a good time, but we don't realize how easy is to forget ourselves in playing. I've always wondered how much time my boyfriend spend on playing Counter-Strike and Dota on Steam and we couldn't find any solution for it until we came across this website: https://www.timecamp.com/en/how-many-productive-work-hours-have-i-played-on-steam/. Now I know that he spends too many hours on it (and how much of it is wasted).

Being an old game, Dota has a good authority in games plus the continuous innovations in the game makes it more interesting for the existing players and attracting new players. Hah, em glad to be a regular gamer of Dota 2.

DOTA is free and apparently very social; I can see it. I go to my games to escape however, and I am having a blast with XCOM2.

Am I missing out? Because I don't play any of those games on steam. Is Dota 2 really that good?

interesting stats to look at

i like how Civ 5 is ahead in peak players over Civ 6 despite it being so old. Shows its overall a much better game and i'm glad its not just me that felt that way. I couldn't get into Civ 6 at all. I dunno where the series will go but it does not look good.

@Yams1980: I get Civ itches every once in awhile and I replay the older versions sometimes before I play the newer ones. And according to Steam my hours played with any game is with Civ V. Civilization is that type of a franchise.

@Yams1980:
You kind of answered yourself in your statement...

"i like how Civ 5 is ahead in peak players over Civ 6 despite it being so old."

- it's older, thus, more people have it... it doesn't serve as any definitive proof that Civ V is a better game than Civ VI.

@H0RSE: if thats true what you say, why is GTA V ahead of GTA IV. And Fallout 4 is way ahead of Fallout 3. And XCOM 2, far ahead of XCOM 1. Borderlands 2, ahead of Borderlands 1. etc etc.

These games are much newer and are miles ahead of the older games. So having the old Civ 5 ahead of Civ 6 does show its lasted the test of time and is preferred over the newer one.
