State of Decay: Lifeline puts you in control of the military

Playing as the military will give you new abilities and challenges.

Lifeline, the upcoming expansion for State of Decay, will put you in control of a military unit with new objectives and abilities, developer Undead Labs announced on its blog.

You’ll control Greyhound One, a small military unit sent to the city of Danforth to rescue scientists whose research is critical to fighting the zombie outbreak. The game will start at the height of the crisis, when you still have access to off-map support from the military, but support will diminish with time as the situation deteriorates. This is opposite the progression structure in the original game, where you start off small and become increasingly stronger as you recruit more people and gather resources.

One of your first objectives will be to secure a landing zone and base where you can receive supply drops and extract civilians, a new goal in the game. Lifeline will also add new military facilities, defenses, weapons, and a new map.

“In zombie fiction, the military is often the go-to bad guy,” Undead Labs said. “They’re the hammer to which every problem is a nail, blindly mowing everything down to serve some unknown goal. But this view is fairly one-sided and naïve. On the State of Decay team, we have a different perspective (some of us firsthand) — the military is made up of many good men and women who stand on the line that divides safety and civilization from chaos and war.”

Earlier this year, Undead Labs confirmed that it had signed a multi-year, multi-title agreement to extend its development relationship with Microsoft, leading to speculation of a possible State of Decay sequel. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.

Day 1 purchase for me.

State of Decay was the indie stand out game imo last year.

The kind of Zombie game I always wanted, where the focus was on surviving, finding supplies, shelter, where it wasn't just "See who can kill the most zombies" a la Left 4 Dead/Dead Island/every zombie game out there.

<< LINK REMOVED >> State of Decay shouldn't be called an indie game. It was published by Microsoft Studios.

On topic i also very much enjoyed the game because of the reasons you mentioned and looking forward to this dlc.

Sounds like an interesting idea, seeing the outbreak from another point of view, if you wanted the players to see the military in a different way, maybe you shouldn't have made the military such di**s in the games mian storyline... Jus' saying...

No doubt XBOTs will have something to say about this but I was a little disappointed with State of Decay. It was quite fun for a while but the potential for a really great game was cheapened by the repetitive game play.

I have the base game and Breakdown on Xbox 360, time to get it on my new kick ass PC. This is a great and easily worth buying again, shame I missed out on the midweek sale on Steam when it was ten bucks.

Why not throw a version of this on XB1? It's not like it is QA'd very well on 360 as it is

<< LINK REMOVED >> Great game -- truly -- but nothing erodes your perma-death characters' sense of security like zombies simply walking straight through the wall at you.

Looking forward to this, I've had a lot of fun with the original and Breakdown, but I really wish they would throw more bug fixes our way.

I really liked State of Decay, except for the fact that sometimes everything would have gone to hell when returning from work, thanks to the real-time progression in this game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Found my morale always at least halved, other than that didn't have any problems leaving the game for 1-2days. But, of course, I would always make preparations before leaving the game: stock up on each resource, have the outposts correctly positioned and layed with traps, make sure no urgent missions are outstanding and there are no infestations nearby.

This game would have been so so so much better if they let you co-op play with a friend.

I'm always glad to hear more from Undead Labs! State of Decay is, in my humble opinion, just about the pinnacle of zombie games and I cannot wait for more.

Playing as the military would be really cool if your goal was to eliminate zombies as well as extract civilians. Obviously getting rid of ALL the zombies would end up being boring so maybe if you did a good job at killing them there would be smaller hordes and less unique zombies instead of wiping them out altogether.

@catsimboy It would be cool if the aim was to extract civilians so the military could deploy tactical nukes, which would -obviously- change the look of the map. To make it a bit more than that though, maybe that's only the first half of the campaign and the seconed is that the zombies survived (becoming radioactive) and a new approach needs to be discovered and implimented.
