Now Playing: Why Zombie Games Refuse To Die

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Microsoft's zombie survival game, State of Decay 2, was the best-selling title of May in the US, the NPD Group has announced. The game launched for Xbox One and PC toward the end of the month and managed to take the number one spot on the software sales chart, edging out other big May releases like the PS4-exclusive Detroit: Become Human. Its strong debut is also impressive considering that the game is available for free for those who have an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Despite suffering from technical and performance issues, State of Decay 2 has proven to be quite popular among fans. The game attracted more than 2 million players within its first two weeks of availability. Microsoft appears to be quite pleased with the title; during its E3 2018 press conference, the company announced that it acquired State of Decay developer Undead Labs, along with four other studios.

State of Decay 2 also had a much stronger debut than its predecessor. According to the NPD Group, the game's launch month sales "nearly doubled" those of the first State of Decay, which originally released for Xbox 360 and PC back in 2013.

The second best-selling game of May was the PS4 reboot of God of War, which has now become the second best-selling game of the year to date in the US, behind Far Cry 5. Rounding out May's top three games was the aforementioned Detroit, which likewise released toward the end of the month.

In terms of hardware, PS4 was once again the best-selling platform of May, although all three major consoles--PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch--achieved "all-time unit sales highs for a May month." You can find the top 20 best-selling games of May below.

Congrats! Game is great fun and this is a good example of how reviews do not dictate what people like to play

Put another way, GameSpot's review of State of Decay 2 completely missed the mark.

@DeviantCode: Next Call of Duty will outsell it too. Is that a better game?

I’m glad it won May. It was an affordable game that shirked the 60 dollar model. And it was some of the most fun I’ve had in co-op in some time. It definitely had some bugs. But not bad enough to damper a fun experience for me, wifey and our friends.

@shinrae5: How much "truck firmly wrecked and stuck in an unlikely position" laughter did you guys have? We had a blast with it, and I've seen streamers doing the same hilariously useless actions since.

This isn't very surprising tbh. It's a fun game and it seems like keeping the same pricing as the first one paid off.

@m4a5: Really? This is ranked by revenue, so that means State of Decay ($30) in ~8 days seems to have sold at least twice as many copies as God of War did the entire month. And that's not even counting Game Pass. I am singularly shocked that it beat God of War, which is even the #2 selling game so far this year. I'm sure God of War will probably stay near the top while SOD2 will peter out a bit, but man, what a great showing by a smaller game. I think you're totally right that the pricing made a huge difference. Great for Undead Labs and great for Microsoft

Very glad to see Detroit: Become Human at the #3 spot. That game should be required playing for all PS4 owners.

@aross2004: Eww; no. Rehash of old sci-fi tropes and an entire "gameplay" model based on QTE is the opposite of fun.

GOW for GOTY short-list.

SoD2 had to sell way more copies than God of War 4 to beat it coz of the price of 39 bucks.

Also,Gamepass didnt count nor did digital sales to achieve this...thats an achievement imo

@sladakrobot: About twice as many - the price is $30 lol. ($50 for ultimate edition). This is crazy right? lol. Digital sales DO count in NPD though. The ones you're missing digital for are largely Nintendo titles - because Nintendo. Early leaks without including digital showed Detroit taking top spot, interestingly.

Not sure what that says about anything, but interesting bit of trivia. Maybe Detroit players are just generally sentimental about their physical media or God of War players are just really into digital lol. SOD2 lack of physical sales is obvious at least lol. Also, Game Pass is indeed not included. (crazy again that sales are this high with game pass and those numbers aren't even included. Even if May is a slow month).

@lonesamurai1: As a gamer, who cares if it's on UWP. It's not as horrible as you're trying to make it out to be.

2. You might as well be complaining about Ubisoft's UPlay or EA's Origin or any other non-Steam platform. If it's a good game, gamers will play it. My brother hates UWP, but bought it because his friend wanted to play.

3. "Better" is subjective. You're trying too hard to put down a game you probably haven't played. And frankly, this point just makes you look desperate to defend your ignorant stance.

So yeah, just because YOU don't like the UWP platform, doesn't mean everyone else hates it too.

@lonesamurai1: I'm not saying it doesn't have it's issues (I've had issues with all the storefronts), but again, you're exaggerating. I bring up the other storefronts because they were the same way when they started out (but why did I have to point the obvious out on that?).

"...just look at reviews on the store pages."
I'm not seeing the "game is broken" reviews anymore than one would on the android store or otherwise. You don't need to exaggerate.

"Their PC games sales say that you're wrong."
Show me where you see this.

And so what if MS is trying to unify apps across multiple devices. Companies have been trying to make it easier in this regard for years. MS is big enough to actually make it happen.
I'd bet you're one of the people who complain about how games are put on consoles first, then PC half a year later (if they decide to at all). And now you're complaining that MS is trying to make it easier to put on console and PC as the same time? As a gamer, I would love if games worked across all platforms immediately, hence why I'll put up with MS trying to work this out.

And again, as a gamer, I reeeaaally don't care if it's a UWP game if the game is good. You might as well be saying "PC master race" unironically.

@lonesamurai1: "First off, Microsoft has stopped releasing sales numbers"
As in, you can't back your claim up. Got it.

"Wow, you didn't go there!"
Yes I did. You can't complain both ways and have people take you seriously.

"They hold back the PC version so that it can be their most polished version"
BS. It's because they need to focus on 1 platform at a time because the tools they have don't allow them to work on both easily. Sure that also allows them to polish it, but don't be so naïve.

"built from the ground up specifically for the PC"
Yeah, because the tools to put games on consoles and PC aren't good enough to easily allow both at once.

"Look at all of the Japanese titles that are on the PC and Switch and, PS4 that are not on Xbox"
So what? This convo is mainly about UWP on PC. I could care less if Japanese titles aren't playable on Xbox too.

"PC their most important platform for game development"
Well, duh. It always has been, but it's also the worse platform to support without tools in place to prevent pirating and cheating (which, last I heard, UWP is annoying to do either of those with).

"Sega just announced for the first time that the Yakuza franchise is coming to the PC ... I don't recall seeing any Xbox announcement for the game"
Again, so what?

"but at least the PC gets the best versions even if we do wait"
HAHAHA, where have you been for many previous PC releases? That only applies to the games that actually get a proper port (duh), but not every game has had such luck. Nowadays it's getting better, but there have been far too many cheap console ports in the past.

Anyways, I'm done here. You stated too much nonsense/fluff and too many irrelevant points. Obviously MS has a ways to go with UWP (and OBVIOUSLY it's not a platform that most devs are trying to take advantage of), but that won't stop me from playing a fun game on PC.

@lonesamurai1: Wow, you wrote a whole novel for no reason. I skipped to that the last line and it's my favorite. Xbox boy? I literally said I could care less if games came to the xbox. Which that childish ignorance sums up why I'm not reading the rest.

But hey, why don't you post even more nonsense/fluff and irrelevant points (if your last post is any indication as to what you posted now) to make yourself feel better about something and explain nothing important.

This "PC Man" had a good laugh at your naïveté. But next time, don't assume you know PC gamers and what they'll do.

@lonesamurai1: Keep in mind that of course these stores would denounce UWP. 1 less gaming store to compete with. But also remember that when those stores were in their infancy (and it was realistically just Steam) that the same was said about them.

My brother wouldn't touch Origin or Uplay initially because they were "hot garbage". Now he is willing to "put up with them". Heck, we tried playing a free weekend of RainbowSix Siege and he couldn't get it working the first or 2nd time. Then we played online and found out that the community was toxic lol (so we did co-op).

And I'm not saying that UWP is great (or good) for gaming, but it works well enough to have fun, and should only get better. If the game is on Steam, I'm 100% going to get it for that platform first.
And again, I would love for games to be easier to get onto different platforms, and at least MS is trying for that. Even if they're trying to "own" it. All I see is fragmentation of gaming communities.

As for the cracking, everything digital gets cracked (client-wise). UWP apps are just more annoying to crack right now.

@lonesamurai1: Yeah. Well, we'll see if they try to make it right eventually, mess it up, and/or take a step back.

I'm betting that to appease their player base, they'll bring the next Halo to UWP (might even be why they built the new engine). That'll certainly please a lot of gamers that remember how fun Halo 2 was on PC. Even if it's not a win64...

@lonesamurai1: Hmmm... I might actually buy a Gears game then (well, probably when it eventually goes on sale).

But yeah, that's what I'm getting at. It at least looks like they're trying for getting games on PC more easily. Though it's still up to the Devs to port it properly lol.

And there's no way that they're going to skimp out for Halo on PC, their beloved franchise. That would piss off a lot of gamers (and give fanboys way too much ammo) :P
