Upcoming space RPG Starfield will allow players to increase the text size thanks to a large font mode. Starfield game director Todd Howard confirmed this as part of the Kinda Funny xCast show, where he discussed the upcoming RPG's various features.

Howard also noted that accessibility--including the ability to adjust and increase font sizes--was a priority when creating Starfield. A large font mode is "important in an RPG where there's a lot of stuff to read," Howard said.

He also noted that large font mode comes into play with various monitor sizes and especially with the popularity of handheld gaming. However, Howard would not confirm whether Starfield would be compatible with the Steam Deck, but said, "We'll talk about that later down the road." It's worth noting that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is playable on Steam Deck, but not officially verified for the platform.

Small text size is a common complaint with modern video games. Even the recently released Final Fantasy 16 was guilty of having small text, despite earning rave reviews from critics. It's an accessibility concern that can render games unplayable for certain players. Though, as was pointed out during Todd Howard's discussion, Microsoft has made it a priority to create games that are accessible to a wide range of players.

Starfield launches exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 1.
