Starfield Console Mod Support, New Creation Kit Still Coming, Says Todd Howard

Bethesda's new Creation Kit is in the words, and console players still have mod support to look forward to, Howard says.

Support for mods on console and an out-of-this-world new Creation Kit for modders to sink their teeth into are still coming to Starfield, game director Todd Howard said in a recent livestreamed interview with Kinda Funny Games.

"Yes, we've delivered it to some people, some of our creators for Starfield," Howard said, confirming the Creation Kit modding software is currently in the hands of select modders. "You're gonna hear some information about that soon. I don't have a date to announce on when its full release is coming, but [it's] really, really important to us. Like, our modders out there have been incredible."

Howard also revealed that Bethesda enjoys seeing fans who mod their games "go pro, from hobby to professional."

Later, a viewer asked if Bethesda still had plans for mod support for the console version of the game. "Absolutely, 100%, yeah," Howard affirmed. "We've seen [console mod support] become such a huge thing for Fallout and Skyrim--that's definitely something that's really, really important to us. The thing about Starfield was that we were kind of able to take those learnings [from previous games] and kind of build that stuff--from the beginning--to have some long legs."

Howard did not reveal when mod support would become available for the console version of the game, but he did share details on the upcoming Shattered Space expansion, which is set to arrive this fall.

Bethesda is known for its prolific community of modders, and Bethesda has historically made efforts to allow console users to enjoy access through certain player-made mods, such as those made available through Skyrim's Creation Club, so it's not surprising to see Starfield get the same treatment. Still, console players who have grown skeptical that Starfield will ever get a Creation Club of its own will likely be relieved to hear that the feature is indeed still in the works.
