Now Playing: Stardew Valley - Xbox One Trailer

Update: Details on the other console versions of Stardew Valley have been confirmed. The PS4 version will launch in North America on December 13, a day before the Xbox One version (and the PS4 version in Europe). The previously announced Wii U port, though, is no longer happening, with the game instead headed to Nintendo Switch.

"Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U, however," reads today's announcement. "Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch. I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch's unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this."

Original Story: The Xbox One version of the charming farming/life sim Stardew Valley will be available in a matter of weeks.

Creator Eric Barone announced today that Stardew Valley launches for Xbox One on December 14. He shared the news in an Xbox Wire post, which might very well be the only time you'll see Animal Crossing get namechecked on that blog.

"I spent over four years developing Stardew Valley, inspired by games that I loved as a child such as Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing," he wrote. "Although the idea of a 'farming RPG' might have seemed odd at first, the games were very addictive and had a heartwarming charm that stuck with me. With Stardew Valley, my goal was to recreate that special feeling and bring it to modern platforms. Stardew Valley has been a great success on PC, and I am very excited to share it with many new people on Xbox One. I hope you'll enjoy your time in the valley!"

Indeed, Stardew Valley has proven to be extremely popular on PC, selling over 1 million copies in less than two months. Multiplayer support and consoles versions (for Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U) were confirmed not long after launch earlier this year. Release dates for those consoles haven't been shared yet.

I tried playing this game but like so many other RETRO games the REVIEWS were much more postie than the actual experience!

I didn't know what to expect when a friend of mine gifted to this me. I heard plenty of good things about it. So I installed it to see what all the hullaballoo was about.

And then I realized I'd been playing the game for SIX HOURS.

So yeah, it's a great game and I'm happy more people will get the chance to play it now.

Now, hang on! The Wii U is dead, but there are still 13 million of them out there and that's where a good chunk of this genre's audience is. I don't see any reason to abandon it so easily.

Likely Nintendo asked them to make it a Switch title.

That's a shame. I'd have bought it for both the Wii U and the Switch. I own it on PC and plan on buying it for Xbox One. If I had a PS4, I'd own it on that as well.
This game is that good. I love this game. It's a love note to all the old school Harvest Moon games.

But you have to remember that it's basically a Harvest Moon clone. If you do not like the old Harvest Moon games, you probably will not like this.

And I'm talking old school. Like SNES, Gameboy Harvest Moon. Games that, while I may love them unequivocally, may not be for everyone.

Side note: I once prided myself on my Harvest Moon game collection. I think I should re-collect them.

For all y'all's that have played it:

For a nine year old and a six year old who are rather mature in their tastes for that age, who love the bejesus out of minecraft, would this be appropriate? One I could play with them?

(Also, who wants to bet that this is one of those "free with plus when released" deals like Rocket League?)

@olddadgamer: Just a heads up there is a little bit of adult humor and mature themes in the game. It's generally subtle but it's there.

For example:A sidequest in the game is to find the Mayor's missing shorts, which are found in the bedroom of the local ranch owner.

Also a character who shows up in year two was a soldier and has PTSD.

@phoenix1289: Ooo, thanks. I'll keep half an eye. But then, nine year old seems to have found Teen Titans Go. He's at that age when laughing at jokes he completely and totally doesn't get is somehow cool.

Exhibit A: The "Shrimp and Prime Rib" song from Teen Titans Go. "Why are you laughing?" "I don't know!"

I digress. Thanks for the advice.

@olddadgamer: As long as the 9yo is willing to read all the text for the 6yo, no problem. It's not that substantial, but the 9yo can prevent it from becoming frustrating.

@olddadgamer: Its not exactly like minecraft because you can't build what ever you want but I would say that they will still like it probably. I would compare it more to harvest moon or animal crossing then minecraft. Also it doesn't have multiplayer yet but it is being worked on.

Avatar image for olddadgamer

@rasdor1: I'll take that. Frankly, I'm trying to wean them off minecraft. I mean, they've been playing that so long they have the hands and "game brains" to move on.

Thanks for the advice.

@olddadgamer: Also... I'm reluctant to even offer this blessing/curse of a reccommendation... Lego Dimensions is amazing for that age group, and does a stellar same+split-screen hybrid.

Beware the many, many, many packs! But content for dollars really is surprisingly high.

@Pyrosa: One of those things that will be inevitable once he hears about it at school. Which should be any....minute....now.....

Makes sense to port this to Nintendo Switch. The Wii U is official dead. No longer in production. So having this as a Nintendo Switch launch title. even though it will be a late port as Xbox one and PS4 versions will have long been out.

Aha, PS4 is coming too. Nice. It seemed odd they wouldnt come out at the same time.

@snugglebear: Ports take a lot of time, given the totally different console certification processes. He has the money to outsource now, like Axiom Verge, but still...

Over 2 millions of sold copies on PC alone. Nice score for small indie game. :) I bought it few days ago, it's great.

@Vojtass: Yes, it's a great game. I got it near its release since I just enjoy Harvest Moon-like games. Since it's got combat, I guess it's closer to Rune Factory.

Avatar image for Vojtass

@oromashu: Harvest Moon was a complete mystery to me, because I have never got a console. I'm familiar with home computers since the 80's: Atari 800XL/65 XT -> ZX Spectrum 128 -> Amiga 500 -> PC. Thanks to Stardew Valley I have an idea what HM really is.

This is a fun little distraction, and even good for non-gamers. I gifted it via Steam to some folks this year.
