Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Mark Hamill Doesn't Like This Version Of Luke Skywalker

"Luke would never say that. I'm sorry."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been in theaters for a week now, and is already massive box office hit. But despite the the strong critical response, film has been met with a more mixed reaction from fans, with some objecting to narrative and character decisions made by writer/director Rian Johnson. It turns out that Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill also has a few issues with how his character is portrayed. Warning, big spoilers ahead!

No Caption Provided

In a new interview uploaded by Youtube channel Jar Jar Abrams, Hamill reveals that the Luke in The Last Jedi "is not my Luke Skywalker." Specifically, the actor states that the Luke from the classic Star Wars trilogy would never end up in the place that we find him in at the start of The Last Jedi; a broken, disillusioned man who has exiled himself to a remote planet to die and take the entire Jedi order with him.

"I said to Rian, 'Jedis don't give up.' I mean, even if [Luke] had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup. But if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference," Hamill said. "But it's not my story anymore, it's somebody else's story and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective. That's the crux of my problem. Luke would never say that. I'm sorry."

Hamill went on to admit that this classic character was now in different hands, and the Luke that he still thinks of is the one that George Lucas created for his movies, "I'm talking about the George Lucas Star Wars, this is the next generation of Star Wars," he said. "I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he's 'Jake Skywalker.' He's not my Luke Skywalker. But I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well.

"Listen, I still haven't accepted it completely, but, it's only a movie. I hope people like it. I hope they don't get upset. I came to really believe that Rian was the exact man they needed for this job."

Hamill actually spoke about his disagreements with Johnson about the direction of the movie back in April. In an interview with ABC, he said that he "fundamentally disagreed with virtually everything" that would happen to Luke in the The Last Jedi.

Another controversial aspect of The Last Jedi is the truth about Rey's parents. Despite the number of fan theories that have built up ever since The Force Awakens was released, in the new movie we discover that her parents were no one of any note. This week, Johnson defended this decision, stating, "I can understand why that answer doesn't feel good. It's not supposed to feel good. It's supposed to be the hardest thing she could possibly hear in that moment."

I agree with Mark regarding Luke. The character would not end up trying to die on an island, having given up on trying to do good in the universe and having lost all hope. I mean Luke turned Vader to the light side after all! The character really had a lot of hope. In the Last Jedi everything feels hopeless. Maybe when we fit the movie in with the new trilogy we may view it differently, especially if things improve greatly for the heroes in episode 9. But I was really depressed watching last Jedi. I did like what they did with Kylo though. And I felt pity for Rey because she was trying to do something that the entire movie was showing you couldn’t be done, with rebels dying by the hundreds and becoming extinct. And Snoke. Now we will never know who the hell he was.

I know the prequels were bad, but Disney's version of Star Wars is a far far worse bastardization.

@Flyin3lvl: If you are referring to the new Republic after "Return of the Jedi" (which was in Legends) Luke fell to the Dark Side and became Darth Sidious (Clone Palpatine) apprentice. Luke learned dark side force powers like Sith Lightning, later on, his sister brought Luke back to the light side of the force. But keep in mind this is all from Legends.

It was an alright movie. Nothing more or nothing less. Pretty disappointing for the next installment in a massive series such as Star Wars I suppose. Then again, I have always enjoyed Star Wars, but found it to be extremely overrated. This new Trilogy isn't bad, but it feels hollow to me in comparison to the classics.

The best Star Wars' stories are in the extended universe anyways...... Which the almighty powers at Disney have decreed non cannon.... Sigh*

@muzza93: Basically any sort of media outside of the movies. That would include comics, novels, videogames, etc.

The Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons are actually recognized as canon by Disney, and I have heard from friends that they are actually pretty good.

My personal favorite Star Wars stories are actually KOTOR on Xbox and the novel Darth Plagueis, which sets up events for the prequel Trilogy and provides some much needed insight into how the Sith infiltrated and took over the Republic.

The more I read about peoples reasons for disliking it the more it cements my reason for loving it.

For any of the great Jedi to become one with The Force they had to fail and a fail hard, then accept it and move beyond it.

Luke was a broken man when he went in to exile, he failed and saw darkness not just within Ben but within himself in the form of fear.

In the end he saved the day in the most Jedi way possible, without striking a single blow, without violence.

I have a feeling for ep IX e'll see plenty more Luke but as a Force Ghost and as powerful, maybe more so, than Master Yoda.

I love Luke’s arc in TLJ. It shows that a great man can still experience failure, self doubt and even moments of weakness and shows that no one is infallible. It shows that even the greatest of heroes, is still human but it isn’t his moments of weakness that defines him, it is his moments of greatest that truly makes him a legend and defines his legacy. It also shows that he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice when needed and to save those in need.

I also really loved the way that they handled the issue of Rey’s parents. It speaks to the fact that you don’t need to come from a certain bloodline and family to achieve greatness. I really hope that they don’t go back on this theme in Ep 9. I think it was handled beautifully in TLJ. In the end her lineage is unimportant, it will be her achievements and actions that will truly define her character and not which bloodline she was fortunate enough to be born into.

This movie gave us something that we rarely see in this franchise and that is nuance. The movie isn't perfect but it is a damn good film and treats its audience like adults but given people’s reaction to this film, I guess George was right when he stated that these films were created for children.

@xshinobi: I'm going to net absolutely 0 likes here, but I see connections to Mass Effect 3 disaster.

My initial reaction toward the ending was the same "WTF? This was it?!" that most people had. But after seeing discussions everywhere I realized that while my problem was mostly how abrupt and quick it was, some people were literally saying that Shepard never listen to a space ghost boy and commit genocide/brainwash/techrape. The concept of ending itself I found to be pretty brilliant, clever and nuanced. Reapers were clearly too much for anything conventional, so we decided to develop the weapon that Protheans and other millenniums old civilizations were also trying to finish. And the end result wasn't simply a laser that targets and blow up only the Reapers. I much prefer that vision against the "Shepard kills Harbinger with BFG and we win, cue Endor party" vision some players wanted.

I also wonder what people really expected and wanted from Luke. Was he supposed to be a saint-like messiah who either teaches Rey and the whole rebellion everything needed to triumph, or he himself delivers the killing blow against the darkness? That would be the safe, happy, predictable and frankly a boring option.

Though for sure his arc could have been different than what he got (IX can still have interesting twists though). I wanted and expected Luke to be a gray Jedi, because he's seen so much and he's grown past the endless, pointless feud of light vs dark. Something that every Jedi and Sith realizes, usually at their deathbed. He pretty much is that person in the movie, ready to let the Jedi order and way of life die with him. What I expected is for him to take a stronger stand against both parties, especially when people come to bother him trying to make him join another quest. I was expecting him to know some sort of gray, unknown secrets that could kill the Force altogether. Clearly Luke's death wouldn't have been enough to end it all since Rey, Kylo, Snoke and others were there with the knowledge of Jedi tricks, with balance tipped over to the dark side too. In my mind the movie (or IX) needed a scene where Rey, Kylo, Snoke, Luke and perhaps some other force sensitive people are in the same room, and then Luke unleashes some sort of power that kills all of the people or at least disconnects them from the Force and knocks them unconscious. Then Luke would be the first to get up and walk away, perhaps as a fugitive who neither rebels or sith-minded trust. But Luke did that because he saw it as the only solution to end the circle that has been around since eons and eons ago. That way he would have had a goal and a selfless (sort of) purpose, instead of retiring to hermit life because his own weaknesses (that clearly don't solve the core issue)

Hamill certainly wouldn't agree with that view either, but I think scriptwriters and directors are the ones who really know a character. But my point is that what did people really want to see? Heroic God Luke? New Dark Lord Luke? A trusty sidekick-mentor to Rey and Leia?

I liked the mystique behind Lukes character in Force Awakens, but I agree with Hamill overall. I don't like the direction they took his character. I know it's just to have him faded out to bring new characters and new story into limelight, but Luke deserves a better ending. Being a Master Jedi, Luke would have had stronger feelings that wouldn't have allowed him to shun himself off. They did the same thing with Obi Wan. The best characters they make, they make bad decisions with. Luke and Obi-Wan growing old crusty and deserted everyone after being the most impactful characters of the saga. Qui-Gon and Boba Fett, saw shameful demises after next to no screen time. Darth Maul only being shown in 1 main movie and the rest of his story on Clone Wars and Rebels. They need to take 10,11 and 12 back before Ep 1 when there were still Jedi and Sith everywhere. Geonosis Colosseum battle scene with all the jedi is still one of the greatest ever.

I absolutely know why many fans hated The Last Jedi. And I know that Disney will completely concur this notion, even though absurd fans like all of you won't.

Primary Reasons-

1. Fans were angry with The Force Awakens derivation from Episode IV and so, wanted a remake of Empire Strikes Back for which Disney could have been criticized. As such, a revolt for assigning George Lucas could have been brought. But they didn't get a remake, and instead was treated by far, the best film of the franchise which a mix of new and old characters with backstories as entertaining as ever. (Proof- See all the critics reviews. Metacritic:80+,Rotten Tomatoes:90+etc) Exasperated, they started bombing it.

2. One should check out-https://screenrant.com/george-lucas-star-wars-sequel-trilogy-story/ and know that Rian's story somewhat resembled to the sequel trilogy plan of Lucas. So, in other words, fans would have criticized no matter what. Because criticism doesn't need money and fools like you would never understand the story of Star Wars. You're all(haters) just 10 year old kids looking for some immature jabbing and meaningless fighting.

3. All the DC/WB fans were disheartened by the ridiculous Justice League and so, to defeat Disney, they had to speak against Star Wars The Last Jedi and reduce it's score to the lowest possible. Why? Greed, Vexation. Apparently fans are bribed by Snyder himself so that, he can continue to direct his films and earn $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. While Disney is bankrupt.

4. Star Wars need to be milked as much as possible. And why not? When Fast and Furious does the recycled story continuously, none blames them, when we see Spiderman for the 5th time, none blames it, or Superman and Batman just rises and saves the city/planet/galaxy for the 10000th time, none ever complains about them. yet they blame Star Wars. It seems the fans(or cynics) don't know what they want.

Denouement- Don't give a sh*t about the opinions from Star Wars haters.

I love it. It's time to let the past to die. I love to have a broken Luke, I love to see Luke die in peace and I love to see Reys with no background. I think that all this was necesary to let the past die nice and carrey on with new stories in this beatyful universe. I m happy to see Disney buying the franchise

Reys parents being nobodies is actually far more effective than being somebodies. Does that mean that the force sensitive boy at the end needs to be from Royal background? No. The answer is in the OT where Yoda explains that the force is everywhere and what binds us. Just some have better abilities in tapping into the power than others.

Seems pretty obvious that Kylo Ren was trying to convert Rey to the dark side during that moment when he told her that her parent's were nobodies. It's clearly a lie he was spinning help push her, and in the 3rd movie we'll find out they were actually important. The second movie of this trilogy was very ... not what i expected. The characters did almost no development, large chunks of the story were pointless, but what I disliked the most is that space is just another room in this show. A hole opens in a ship, no vacuum effect. Bomber girl at the start is sitting right over the open bomb bay ... in space... no suit... still breathing.

@Phazevariance: He didn't tell her that. She said it first. Because she has always known. The Force Awakens confirms that she is definitely not a Skywalker. And the only other option would be for her to somehow be a Konobi, which would feel... forced, at best. Her parents being nobody is the only logical conclusion and one that I've been saying for years. I don't know why anyone thought it would be otherwise.

This sooo much THIS. Mark Hamill is right about all of that and why although the movie was good it failed to be great in my mind. Luke would never end up like that and it seems like Rian Johnson and Disney are more inline with destroying Star Wars and what it means to many who grew up with it in an attempt to draw in a younger crowd.

Star Wars long ago became a consumer product. And so it is with all those comic book character movies. In the 80s, when they started repackaging kids toys as movies, they just consumated the capitalist process.

You're not watching a movie, you're consuming a franchise: the movie, the video games, the happy meal trinkets, the whole piece of crap.

It's barely storytelling. Art, hehe, dream on.

No shit Mark Hamill feels this way. We had three OT movies to see Luke fleshed out as a character; it really doesn't take a genius that they discarded Luke's characterization in the old movies and made up their own version of Skywalker.

And for the delusional posters who are going in topics spamming "omg you just wanted him to be EU Luke". I haven't seen a single person make that argument; criticisms of Luke have almost strictly been in comparing him to OT Luke.

@davillain-: What's especially funny is that by the end of EU, Luke DID disband the order and become reclusive, and it was exactly the kind of creative decision that fans griped about with the EU and some applauded the de-canonization of the EU for. And now here we are, in the same creative place, and many of those same fans are now defending the very concepts they once griped over.

Saw this movie on sunday and I am just accepting the reality of it. It's just a movie and it wasn't made for me and that's ok. At least kids are getting something to enjoy but I'm not going to push my kids into it like my dad did, ROTJ was religion in my household. I wonder how much of this franchises success is based on that.

@muppetbabymastr: This franchises success is based on nostalgia. Kids love Star Wars but I watched it for the first time when I was 20 years old and did not like it very much. Young Mark Hamill is a terrible actor and honestly, Carrie Fischer isn't very good either. The Ewoks were retarded and how Leia and Han all of a sudden had a thing for each other in Empire came so far out of left field that I almost laughed. I appreciate Star Wars from a historical perspective. It was a landmark film for visual effects and Sci Fi filmmaking. But being influencial and being good are two very different things. The movies don't hold up well at all. I thought TLJ was fine. Not the best movie out there, but perfectly enjoyable.

@ltjohnnyrico: Believing a vision and accepting that the movie franchise is going in a different direction and agreeing with or liking the characterization of a character are two different things. The film is ok but had they handled Luke's characterization better I would have been happier. Still ok with the movie overall but not happy about Luke's arc.
