Star Wars: The Last Jedi Will "Address" Rey's Parentage, Director Says

Who do you think her parents are?

Who are Rey's parents? It might not be too long until we find out the burning Star Wars question. This December's Star Wars: The Last Jedi will "address" Rey's parentage, director Rian Johnson has revealed.

Speaking on Good Morning America this week, Johnson said, "It's something that is absolutely going to be addressed." He was about to reveal more details, saying "it depends on..." but then he stopped himself from saying too much. Here's the clip:

The Last Jedi will have lots of surprises and twists for fans, and Johnson said he wants to keep all of these secret until the movie comes out so viewers can find out for themselves.

"How we address [Rey's parentage] and how you feel about it and what happens with that is one of them," he said about The Last Jedi's secrets.

Last year, Rey actress Daisey Ridley teased that The Last Jedi may reveal who Rey's parents are. According to USA Today report, Johnson said the "deepening of familial themes" in the movie will play a "huge part" in the story, especially for Rey. This sounds like a reference to the question around who Rey's parents are.

The first trailer for The Last Jedi was released this week at Star Wars Celebration--watch it here. Also at the show, we saw a new trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront 2, learned its release date, and a lot more. Check out GameSpot's roundup here to see all the big news from Star Wars Celebration.

Okay that's nice. We could also learn about it ourselves when we see the movie, believe it or not. I know it's super awesome to hear it from Gamespot first and not have to worry about pesky things like surprise or being interested in the movie itself revealing it...but oddly enough there are some of us who actually prefer to do it that way.

By putting shit like this in the very title of the article...you deprive those people of even that choice...classy

Addressing and answering are two very different things.

In some conversation with another character. "No I really don't know who my parents were." is addressing the issue not answering it.

Since The Force Awakens was a carbon copy of A New Hope with some names and actors swapped out, The Last Jedi will be a carbon copy of The Empire Strikes Back.

2 hours into the movie: "Rey, I am your father"

@zerohournow: Since the Force Awakens was basically A New Hope 2015 Edition, I would assume so.

Personally, I could care less who her parents are ATM.

I just want to know why she whooped so much *** in the last movie without any training whatsoever, more than anything else.

inb4femaleagenda - Yeah whatever, I need to know this info in episode 8, or this trilogy is pretty much ruined for me... :(

@Silver17: Might have been joking, but ecs33 is right. because The Force.

I think the prequels did the series a disservice by making it look like Force users need years of training like some Kung Fu school and they learn these flashy moves and learn how to be ninjas or something.

BUT

if you go back to the original SW, A New Hope, Obi Wan explains it in like 2 minutes. You feel the Force. It guides your actions. Luke asks if that means it controls you, and Obi says no, you can control it. And then later he blocks lasers from a probe without being able to see.

That's it. You either feel the Force or you don't, you let it guide and you control it and your actions. This isn't a plot hole or a great mystery.

^ I feel ya, but here's the thing about that. How many light saber battles did Luke get into in Ep 4? None

The only thing that he did was train with that orb on the Falcon, and he even struggled with that.

Rey comes along, and just whoops sooo much ***. I mean, I spent more time thinking about "Solo" and the flaws of Rey more than the movie itself after I watched it... :(

Right, but how many light saber battles OR light saber training did Luke get before fighting Vader in EP 5? That's right, zero. none. same thing.

AT LEAST in EP 7 we see that Rey has learned how to fight and survive growing up on Jakku.

Yeah, but even Obi showed Luke how to use a light saber, and Luke didn't have any Saber battles until Empire.

The other mind stuff like when they couldn't get into her head, or even the mind trick with the storm trooper, I can get that but here kid have a light saber and she made everyone look bad.

Nah, I need somebody in 8 to explain this in 8, preferably by Luke...

@Silver17: You point out one of many GIANT flaws in the disaster known as EP7. Episode 1 thru 3 are worthy of oscars for writing compared to EP7.

@spartanx169x:

EXACTLY! Before EP7, I thought nothing could ever get worse than EP1. However as annoying as EP1 was, at least it made sense.

To me, EP7 tried to be EP4, but the story was extremely flawed, that I struggled to enjoy it.

^ I know that I'm in the minority, but I need less action in EP8, and more "Let's fix all the holes that 7 left with dialogue", or I'm probably done. Like I said before, I could care less who her parents are, just fix the flaws from EP 7... :(

@Silver17: I saw EP7 for free on a long flight. I wanted a refund for the time I wasted watching the movie. lol. I could easily list a page of flaws that are in EP7. Whoever wrote it literally knew nothing about the SW universe. I have very low expectations for EP8. They are going to have to write a masterpiece to make up for how bad EP7 is.

Does it also address why Rey is such a boring ass character towards the end of TFA? I think that's a much bigger issue. More realistic struggle and less Mary Sue, please. Her parentage isn't really that interesting in the overall scheme of things.

She's Lando and Leia's daughter.

It happened on the medical frigate at the end of Ep V while Luke was in surgery.

Damn I hope it isn't Luke, other families can be brought in to add some depth to the story, why not Galen Marek and Juno Eclipse, Force unleashed might not have been the greatest game ever, but they did create a good story, like the Marek family crest was used as the Symbol for the rebel alliance.

@Runeweaver: An they already have the actor to play him because the character model was based on him; he gave Maul his voice.

It's already such a wasted opportunity.

The Force Unleashed games for the Wii, even though they lack graphical detail, are fantastic and truly feel like using the force.

@Runeweaver: A lot of people liked the force unleashed and many were hoping that starkiller was going to be reintroduced in rebels but unfortunately its looking unlikely now. Would be awesome if starkiller was the one to end the ghost crew tho. People just aren't fans of the second game which was rushed.

It will probably be a stretch of that sort.

The core movies have always been about the bloodline of the Skywalkers. We already have that in the new trilogy with Kylo Ren being of Skywalker blood, so Rey could be the daughter/granddaughter/etc of any other major force-using character in the canon universe. With her struggles between Light and Dark, and considering the available canon force-users, I am starting to think she is Ezra Bridger's daughter. Right ages for it to work and similar issues dealing with the Light and Dark. None of the other available characters really make sense and if they are going to make this big a fuss about it, I seriously doubt both her parents will be brand new characters.

I think Rey is snokes daughter. Makes sense. We have kylo, the evil son of good parents leia and Han, and then we would have rey, the good daughter of evil dad. That's perfect balance if you ask me. Light and dark. Star wars is all about this type of duality.

@thebigworm420: Given that force-kids almost always turn out to be reverse-aligned from their parents, it also makes the "no marriage/kids" rule for Jedis make a lot more sense.

Absolutely no surprises in movies anymore because they just can't keep their mouths shut and a strange desire by fans to be spoiled before seeing the actual movies. Such a shame..

Probably Fin or Poe would make some stupid joke ala "you are a big girl and I am not your father" and Disney producers would be like "we told you so"
