Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 outfitted with Boba Fett

Comic-Con 2010: LucasArts shows off extended demo of upcoming game, reveals early plot spoilers and teaser clip featuring infamous bounty hunter.

Who was there: LucasArts executive producer Haden Blackman took the podium, while a fellow Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II development team member took the controls of the demo.

What they talked about: Blackman discussed the game mechanics at length during an extended version of the demo they showed during GameSpot's live E3 stage show. Highlights included cinematic grapple moves that saw Starkiller jamming a lightsaber through a stormtrooper's gut and flinging him off into oblivion, as well as the Force Fury mode that amps up Starkiller's Jedi powers, including the crowd-favorite decapitating lightsaber throw. Blackman also confirmed that holochrons, lightsaber crystals, and new costumes for Starkiller will all be available in the game.

"Mr. Fett, I presume."

One of the biggest reveals was a brief teaser that confirmed that the legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter, Boba Fett, will be featured in the game. The scene takes place just after Starkiller's escape from the cloning facilities on the planet Kamino. Fett is negotiating the terms of his contract with Darth Vader, who has hired him to chase down Starkiller. The bounty hunter demands a squad of expendable storm troopers, and Vader does him one better as two nimble warriors and a giant arachnid mech creep in from just offscreen, much to the hired gun's satisfaction.

Blackman also spent a good deal of time outlining plot points from the early part of the game [SPOILERS BEGIN]. After the escape from Kamino featured in the stage demo, Starkiller flees to Cato Neimoidia in search of the captive Jedi General Rahm Kota. In order to reach the arena where Kota has been forcibly engaged in gladiatorial combat for the past seven straight days, Starkiller must smash his way through an opulent casino. As one can imagine, this environment will provide no shortage of shiny, breakable objects for players to flex their Force powers on. Arriving in the arena, Starkiller so angers the local baron that the baron unleashes a massive gorog on the two Jedi. The gorog was the big ugly beast from the TFU2 debut trailer.

[SPOILERS CONTINUE] After what will no doubt be a serious boss fight, Starkiller and the gorog topple off the arena platform and enter a free fall. Our fearless Jedi uses his skills to punch a hole through the beast and put it down for the count. In swoops the Rogue Shadow to rescue Starkiller from his fall, and he rushes to the bridge, hoping to find Juno Eclipse at the helm, his love interest from The Force Unleashed. Finding only Kota on board, Starkiller resists the general's desire to turn him loose on the Empire and turns his attention to tracking down Juno. In the course of conversation, Kota mentions the planet Dagoba, and Starkiller, sensing the power in that name, heads to the swampy planet straightaway. We are told Dagoba will be the site of a very revealing vision, and though Blackman was coy about whether or not Yoda would be involved, the fact that The Force Unleashed 2 takes place only one year before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope (putting it about four years before The Empire Strikes Back) points strongly to the diminutive green Jedi's involvement. [END SPOILERS]

Quote(s): "I'll need a squad of stormtroopers. They won't be coming back." --Boba Fett in the teaser reveal.

The takeaway: Not only is LucasArts focused on continuing the strong story from The Force Unleashed, but it is dedicated to addressing fans' concerns (no repeated knockdown attacks, no Star Destroyer bugs) and ramping up the action to make being a badass Jedi even more fun and destructive than before.

Random fact/who knew?: Gamers will be able to customize lightsabers individually, mixing and matching crystals to maximize powers and/or create stylish color combinations.

Customizable lightsaber? Count me in! Nonetheless, TFU2 sounds like a definite improvement over the first.

@Vegna871 (Brood) By herself? Sure. In really any run. She's just an annoying distraction when facing off with her pet (Bull Rancor). Pity she doesn't glitch hit as well as the acid plants do when you use lightning grenade. Sometimes I can hit the thing for massive damage, sometimes for none and sometimes just for a small chip. The plants are pretty consistent at glitching for multiple 'collisions' before exploding. I spent alot of time working with her pet. Mostly testing better ways to safely deal with both in higher runs. The tusks hurt us even when not 'attacking'...which is annoying. NOTE: Vexxtal was somewhat funny to use on her as her invisibility would be foiled (for what little that is worth) and somehow I found the glitched saber look + the Vexxtal effect being stuck in the QTE finishers...highly amusing. But that's just me. ('Carbonite Trooper') I don't expect too much of a challenge from it to be honest. Maybe the type to force 'Grip' though. I wouldn't be too happy about that. I prefer alternatives. We'll see. NOTE: I couldn't find much of a 'hardcore' community for SWFU in my cursory search. Few specialty run talk at all really. The Star Wars union disappointed me greatly with their casual interest in the game (mostly about the story then quickly moving on to another game).

@Vegna871 (Purge Troopers) They are said little women when lightning comes into play or you get the chance to abuse grip. Be it with object toss, mass grip glitching, foes picking up the Purge Trooper for you, environmental aid, locking on to a target behind a door and being cheap, etc. But lighting really does ruin them. Were it not for the ability to pass through walls, I may not have had much use for Dashing Shock personally. (Royal Guards) You can mostly get used to their 'defenses'. NOTE: For the final encounter with them and a Shadow Guard *in runs that allow it*, I find that putting the Death Star 'rings' where they spawn ruins their game plan. I can grab whore through them among other things. They become pretty much defenseless >____>. I'm good for cheap tactics if nothing else. Pity we cannot grab Paratus under any circumstances and Aerial Strike is usually terrible against him. If either worked out better, I might have had a less laughable tactic in the NFR+...but I really saw no other working options despite how terrible the resort is. (Jumptroopers) Basically just a problem in a Pacifist+. I imagine I used Aerial Strike *great move* against them to get them down. I've not read my notes in a long time though. (Scrap) Not too bad. You can get used to their behavior in time like the rest.

@Vegna871 (Kazdan) NFR+ against him sucked. Pacifist+ didn't allow me any option, but to fight so I crushed him. Force+ isn't hard at all (as you might imagine). NUR+ isn't tough either. But lightsaber only (no augments allowed in the 'plus' version so lighting and push versions of strikes aren't okay either)...it was basically square whoring with rapid cancels and praying for a lock while hoping he doesn't decide to go crazy and/or OHK you with a glitch push. I recall it taking over 5 minutes per stage where you have to fight him directly before he retreats to give a checkpoint. Something like that. Melee isn't so bad when you get used to it, but Grip abuse is highly encouraged. That's the easy path to victory. (Incinerator) Their shield may be force proof, but that isn't a perfect defense by a long shot. Besides objects being abuse, foes can kill foes (usually Imperials set against other factions). (Shadow EVO) It's more that they can pull 'Shadow' antics if you aren't paying attention and use the stun locking rape gun of the EVO. Said EVO's lightning protection isn't absolute.

@MrStarkiller Peratus on a NFR is probably the worst thing ever. he's the only boss in the game where melee is a bad idea. I mostly didn't like the incinerator troopers because they did insane damage over time if you let them AND had force proof shields. in a group they were a major pain. Shadow EVO troopers take the same stratgy as shadow trooper. saber throw or up close and personal (they both die in 4 saber hits, i usually just go after them first unless there's a Stormtrooper commander nearby.) Purge Troopers are tough but manageable, especially with lightning or lightning saber combos. Royal Gurads are my least favortie because they're nerly force immune unless you catch them off guard (rare, as they seem to be able to cancel attacks to block force powers, at least they did for me) and they don't get stunned during their heavy attack animations. Jet Troopers and Scrap enemies are a bit annoying on NFR but otherwise aren't much of a problem. everything else is trash. Special note: Brood is the easiest boss in the game. you can trap her in multiple corners and destroy her without even thinking about force powers. her rancor is also simpler than others of its kind since you can just force him to charge, dodge or jump over him, then beat him up as you see fit. That's my take on the enemies. from the one trailer i've seen the stormtroopers seem to be a bit more organized, but not much. the one other enemy seemed pretty smart though (the carbonite trooper or w/e he was.)

@jangof-76 boba fett's claim to fame is 1. the name sounds very catchy. 2. without his suit, he is just a normal human, but when he has his suit, he can fly, shoot rockets, shoot fire, pop out guns like robo cop. His suit is basically what every normal human wants to have. 3. he had a cold calm cool voice. This is same reason why batman is liked by huge amount of ppl despite being just a human.

Can someone explain to me the big deal about Boba Fett? He was a peripheral character who had maybe 10 minutes of screen time tops, and probably about 3 or 4 lines of dialogue. So what am I missing? Because people go on about him like he played some pivotal role in the saga...

@Vegna871 NOTE: Any 'heavy' had light potential to pierce or guard now and then. Their melee could be blocked but not parried (we didn't have a counter and the parry wasn't that good of an opening maker). Felucians weren't that bad, but the Shamans were trouble makers. *priority* Rancors and other such large targets fell victim to electric grenade acid flowers (glitch damage) or 'corpse vortex'. The slug tails were amusing additions. Militia were fine. Shaak Ti and Kota are fine. Brood was weak and annoying. Paratus was insane (NFR+). No grabs, one-hit kill glitches, etc. ...Vader wasn't that impressive and the Emperor was good for killing his own men. The Purge Troopers were my least favored foe when I couldn't just use various force trickery to mock them or couldn't just kill them. Their nearly silent, long range homing missle was great for sniping me unawares. Nevermind the classic stun lock antics. Fighting them upclose without lightning takes practice. Learning to lift them was nice. ~I liked the enemy variety, but I worry about talk of AI...I don't see that happening

@Vegna871 Incinerator Troopers weren't that bad outside the No Force Run as I recall. I'd have to freshen up on old tactics. Shadow EVO Troopers were a bit bastardly. Jumptroopers were only annoying in Pacifist+ and the NFR+. Scouts just put a bit of pressure on you from a distance. Senate Guards were nothing. Royal Guards weren't that tough either. In groups they could get lucky. Shadow Guards were worthy enough if a bit bothersome (mostly when fighting a group of guards without dirty tricks, holocron aid, etc. in a specialty run). Rhodians weren't that bad. Scrap could be a bit annoying on higher settings. AT-KTs and AT-STs weren't much of a threat. AT-CTs surprised me with their tractor beam objects... I think those negated i-frames. In all cases, it was stupid that if you got on their shoulder or head, it counted as ground and the shockwave hurt us. If I get on either, I'd expect some nice damage oppertunities. Wookies (slaves) were helpful to put to work in my specialty runs. I didn't expect them to hit to damn hard. I need only get their target to hold still and not hit them. Sturn, the Shadow Guard, Purge Troopers, etc. ...all get rocked if you get one (or more) to start clobbering the target. Hell, lift one and have it pick up a Purge then drop the latter off a cliff (or into laser grids).

How do you find that the first game was "unplayable"? Were you trying to play it with your toes? I had no such control issues. Maybe a CAT scan is order.

I just worry as to how insane this game is. I mean its in the universe of starwars, but you have this "apprentice" who is about 1000 times more powerful than any character in any starwars. He can crush tie fighters etc. Its just a bit too much. I enjoyed the original game, but cant help but think its a beat em up slash game with a star wars skin. Doesnt really suit starwars in any way shape or form. Enjoyed the first game though, even though it was just wrong i beat vader... and a bit lame.

I wish people would quit throwing around terms that do not apply to this game. It was not "unplayable" in the least. It had plenty of bugs -- too many, really -- but it was a really good game that would have been great with a few more months of development.

Its not that the Jedi dont use force lightening its that you can only master some of the powers of the force. Thats why if your evil like the Sith, you can only have strong powers that are evil like force lightening. In the books Luke Skywalker used both sides of the force.

@ehuman if george lucas has approved this...and he has, then jedi can use force lightening. Nowhere in the movies or shadows of the empire (which are lucas approved cannon) does it say Jedi cant use force lighting. The idea that they cant comes from the books, comics, and (largely) the old starwars table top RPG that most of the books and comics originally pulled from. The official ending to Unleashed was declared cannon by lucas....get over it. Now if the force powers were structured differently and there was a light dark meter maybe, but this came doesnt need it. Personally, killing stormies is fun, then end. P.S. We want chilly willy.

@Jasbro that's why I said "as far as we know" = D .... it's a little suspicious though that starkiller jumped out of a building in Kamino since that is where all of the cloning facilities are...however Vader could have been referring to his past when he said "you are a shadow of your former self..." the first leads to cloning (more or less) and the second leads to original... Either way we'll find out when it gets released...Oh try going to Gamestop.com and look up SW: TFU 2...Under bonus content it has a exclusive costume that may answer some questions.....

Jedi don't use force lightning because it is a destructive kind of force, not because they cannot use it. It's a cultural distinction between Jedi and Sith. The Sith basks in the power and knowledge of the force and uses it to rule the universe because they can! The Jedi on the other hand, sees the force as a responsibility to safe guard the universe from the power hungry Sith.

@alext18 It has yet to be proven that he is a clone, i read somewere that one of the developers said he isnt a clone but the story will revolve around him finding out among other things. Also @IkedaTeramusa, they reason why some are questioning how boba fett is in this is because he died in the Tatooine dlc pack as you fought him and he exploded, but those dlc's were a what if kinda thing, ie what if darth vadar had died and starkiller did become the emperors new aprentice.

well i'm not sure if this will answer your question but... in KOTOR lightside people could use force lightning but also suffer a consequence because of it... aka not as powerful as it would be if that person was dark side. Also, as far as we know Starkiller is now a clone. And being a clone "he" still retains all of his experiences and memories... Hope this answers your question...
