Patty Jenkins is already a part of the DC universe through the Wonder Woman films, but now she's ready to take on another huge property. The Wonder Woman director will helm the upcoming Star Wars film Rogue Squadron, Disney announced today.

Information on the film is light; the only concrete information we know is that the movie is currently expected to come out in time for Christmas 2023. Along with the announcement though, Patty Jenkins posted a video to Twitter discussing her personal motivations in making the film. After rollerblading across an asphalt lot, Jenkins sits in the trunk of a car to remove her skates and, still out of breath, tells us what to expect.

"I grew up the daughter of a great fighter pilot, and every day I would wake up and go outside and look up and see my father in his squadron taking off in their F4s roaring across the sky, and it was the most thrilling thing, still, I've experienced in my entire life," Jenkins said. "So when he lost his life in service to this country, it ignited a desire in me to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time. But try as I might and look as I did, I couldn't find the right story ever. I kept looking and looking, but I just couldn't find the right one--until now. Now I found a movie about two things I love, so I'm going to see you very soon."

Then, Jenkins dons an X-Wing fighter helmet, pulls up the iconic blaze orange X-Wing jumpsuit, and heads toward an X-Wing parked in what turns out to be an airfield.

Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy gave us a small clue of what we can look forward to, though: "This story will introduce a new generation of star fighter pilots, as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary pushing high speed thrill ride," Kennedy said. "The Legend of Rogue Squadron has been long beloved by Star Wars fans and will move us into a future era of the galaxy." While it's very possible that Wedge will be featured in the movie, he may not be in the pilot's seat.

Rogue Squadron is a fighter squadron in the Star Wars films, shows, and books. Traditionally led by Captain Wedge Antilles, the squadron featured prominently in the Star Wars novels that came out between the original trilogy up until Disney relegated those to the Star Wars Legends line of non-canonical stories.
