Star Wars' Oscar Isaac Attached To Star In Metal Gear Solid Movie

The actor, who played Poe Dameron, is set to be Solid Snake in Sony's Metal Gear Solid movie

Oscar Isaac, best-known for his role as Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars trilogy, has been tapped to play Solid Snake in Sony's Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation, Deadline reports. Funnily enough, Issac jokingly cast himself as Solid Snake back in March 2019 during the press tour for J. C. Chandor’s action-adventure film Triple Frontier.

The movie is being helmed by Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who gave an update on the over six-year-long project in July 2020. Derek Connolly, co-writer of the latest Jurassic World trilogy, is penning the script. Avi Arad, one of the producers of the critically acclaimed animated superhero movie Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, is producing. Sony Pictures is overseeing the entire project, while Peter Kang severing as the executive.

Now Playing: Metal Gear Solid: Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts Discusses The MGS Movie

Vogt-Roberts confirmed the report later on December 4 with a picture of Isaac along with several emojis that should be familiar to the series' fans. He also retweeted several other posts that mentioned Isaac playing Snake.

Isaac has a very prolific filmography, having acted in everything from Drive to Inside Llewyn Davis prior to Star Wars. Last year, he flexed his action muscles with a major role in Triple Frontier alongside Ben Affleck and fellow Star Wars actor Pedro Pascal.

A production start date for the Metal Gear Solid movie is unknown at the moment, but the project is a high priority for Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. A potential reason why a start date hasn't been nailed down is because of Issac's busy schedule. The pandemic is also unlikely to help matters.

Issac is already slated to appear in three films next year: Denis Villeneuve's highly anticipated sci-fi epic Dune (which hits HBO Max and enters theatres simultaneously), Brian Petsos' dark comedy directorial debut Big Gold Brick, and Paul Schrader's crime drama The Card Counter.

Next to these films, Issac has booked himself up with television projects, too. This includes HBO's Scenes From A Marriage with Jessica Chastain and the titular role in Marvel's Moon Knight for Disney+. He will also star in and produce The Great Machine, an adaptation of the comic Ex Machina, and appear in Barry Levinson's Francis And The Godfather with Jake Gyllenhaal.

I'm going to get roasted for saying this, but I think Andrew Lincoln could pull it off. Just my opinion.

Amazing actor, but he is a bit of a shrimp. Then again, there is Tom Cruise playing superhero for all these decades and he too is a shrimp. I guess it could work.

@ahpuck: Yes, but he does his own stunts and that sets him apart from others. I do not care about his religious alignment but I admire him for the work he does on screen. However he be no Snake (Sorry Tom).

This definitely should have been cast with Kurt Russel playing Snake and written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga who did Maniac.

No, he is not an fossil as man can push themselves to do amazing things, but he might turn it down for health reasons. If Arnold, Stallone can still push movies we are in the times.

I will give this a chance. A lot of my friends online seem to love this. If this hits home streaming simultaneously as the theater (personally love that HBO Max is doing that) then I'll watch it.

Just get Kurt Russel to reprise the role of Snake Pliskin who this character is based on anyway.

@gatsbythepig: Kurt Russell is currently 69 years old. He might be able to play Dying Snake at the end of MGS4, but that’s the franchise-ending movie, not the franchise starter.

@zmanbarzel: Exactly, Rusell would have been perfect for this role, but it's too late for that.

At least Hayden Christensen could act in prequels. The sequels mostly had poor actors, but those were overshadowed by bigger problems.

His character in SW wasn't obnoxious though, I can give him that.

No way where they ever going to make a movie that’s anywhere near the spirit and character of the games. Now with Isaac onboard it’s guaranteed to be a train wreck.

@Slayer70: What works in a game don't necessarily work in a movie. Also, who wants a brick-by-brick recreation of the video game to live-action? Kojima's vision of it was gold but I think the movie should be inspired by the game, not mimic it. This should be a blend of 1995's The Rock, Mission Impossible and the Transformers movie, mix in some of the philosophical themes from the game.

@Slayer70: The movie can't POSSIBLY work, because when I think of Metal Gear, I think of the time I tried to play MGS4 before work, loaded a save file, opened a door, got into an hour long cutscene, had to save and go to work. Came home, loaded up my game right after that cutscene, walked down a hallway, climbed a ladder, and got a TWO HOUR LONG CUTSCENE.

The movie's gonna have to fit in all the action and tension of a MGS game, but will they have time to ask the audience if Love can Bloom on the Battlefield? Or let us know that the Inuit word for Wolf is "Keglunec?" Or let us hold the Left Trigger to change the movie's perspective and leer at the hot female enemy's butt???

Then again, they COULD sell popcorn in little Cardboard Boxes labeled "The Orange." Maybe this movie will work...

Until then, I am going to rewatch "Steamed Hams but it's Metal Gear Solid" on the youtube.

It's very likely going to be terrible like the vast majority of video game movies. That said, he's not a bad choice.
