Star Wars' Oscar Isaac Attached To Star In Metal Gear Solid Movie

The actor, who played Poe Dameron, is set to be Solid Snake in Sony's Metal Gear Solid movie

Oscar Isaac, best-known for his role as Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars trilogy, has been tapped to play Solid Snake in Sony's Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation, Deadline reports. Funnily enough, Issac jokingly cast himself as Solid Snake back in March 2019 during the press tour for J. C. Chandor’s action-adventure film Triple Frontier.

The movie is being helmed by Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who gave an update on the over six-year-long project in July 2020. Derek Connolly, co-writer of the latest Jurassic World trilogy, is penning the script. Avi Arad, one of the producers of the critically acclaimed animated superhero movie Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, is producing. Sony Pictures is overseeing the entire project, while Peter Kang severing as the executive.

Now Playing: Metal Gear Solid: Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts Discusses The MGS Movie

Vogt-Roberts confirmed the report later on December 4 with a picture of Isaac along with several emojis that should be familiar to the series' fans. He also retweeted several other posts that mentioned Isaac playing Snake.

Isaac has a very prolific filmography, having acted in everything from Drive to Inside Llewyn Davis prior to Star Wars. Last year, he flexed his action muscles with a major role in Triple Frontier alongside Ben Affleck and fellow Star Wars actor Pedro Pascal.

A production start date for the Metal Gear Solid movie is unknown at the moment, but the project is a high priority for Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. A potential reason why a start date hasn't been nailed down is because of Issac's busy schedule. The pandemic is also unlikely to help matters.

Issac is already slated to appear in three films next year: Denis Villeneuve's highly anticipated sci-fi epic Dune (which hits HBO Max and enters theatres simultaneously), Brian Petsos' dark comedy directorial debut Big Gold Brick, and Paul Schrader's crime drama The Card Counter.

Next to these films, Issac has booked himself up with television projects, too. This includes HBO's Scenes From A Marriage with Jessica Chastain and the titular role in Marvel's Moon Knight for Disney+. He will also star in and produce The Great Machine, an adaptation of the comic Ex Machina, and appear in Barry Levinson's Francis And The Godfather with Jake Gyllenhaal.

We already got ourselves a Snake Plisskin played by Kurt Russell, look him up.

He could play an older Snake!

Fair warning: The Director and Writer worked on some of the measurably-dumbest big-budget action movies you can possibly watch. (kong:SI, Jurassic World, etc)

Oscar's a decent actor, but (see X-Men Apocalypse) even a convincing character performance can't save an idiotic production of a brain-dead script.

@Pyrosa: I'll agree that Kong wasn't a 'good' movie, but damn it was one of the more visually stunning movies I've seen in a long time.

@uninspiredcup: Because why not? It's by far one of gaming's best franchises. If done right, it could be very good.

@ahrequenomori: But, when have these movie makers 'done right' on a video game movie?

@ahrequenomori: Number of times people have said "If it's done right it could be very good" about a video game movie: Twelve billion or so.

Number of times it's been done right: Zero.

Sad but true.

@Lord_Sesshy: The only reason Sonic worked is because the franchise never really had a proper origin story, and it's pretty easy to come up with one in a world fueled by cartoon logic.

@ahrequenomori: Dunno man. The games are too weird for mainstream and if they make the movie some action blockbuster and drop the weirdness, then the die hard fans won't like it

@phili878: I know I've been saying it a lot, but Jensen Ackles might work. Looks similar enough with the right make-up, and not much at that, can do the dark brooding tone very well, and can straddle the line between dramatic and hammy very well.

@Pyrosa: with the very weak new Hollywood actors that they have been been wrongly picking since the late 00s, it is really difficult.

Not a bad choice. He's a fine actor who does look similar to the character. If they had to go with a well known name he's a good fit.
