Star Wars Open-World Game Is In Development At EA, According To Job Listing

Visceral's linear, story-driven game was rebooted just last year.

Electronic Arts is at work on a new open-world Star Wars game, if a newly discovered job opening is any indication. Although the publisher has shared little information about what to expect from the rebooted version of Visceral's game following the studio's closure, we may now have a clue as to what form it will take.

The job listing, discovered by GameSpot, was recently published on EA's jobs site. It's for the position of lead online engineer in Burnaby, at EA's Vancouver studio, and it makes no attempt to hide what applicants will be working on. The opening sentence reads, "Lead a team to deliver Online features for a Star Wars Open World project." The rest of the listing doesn't share much else, though there are references to the game being multi-platform (which is little surprise) and a requirement to have "experience implementing Online features such as Matchmaking, Asynchronous interactions, Live services, Server-host migration, etc."

We've reached out to EA for further details and will report back in the (unlikely) event it has anything to share. It's not the first time we've heard that EA might be at work on an open-world Star Wars game; a job listing back in 2013 also suggested as much.

No Caption Provided

EA currently owns the exclusive rights to produce console and PC games based on Star Wars, but the last six months or so have been tumultuous. There was the Battlefront 2 microtransaction controversy, and before that, EA shut down Visceral Studios and confirmed major changes would be made to its Star Wars game (pictured above), which EA's Vancouver studio will continue to work on. We also know that Titanfall developer Respawn is working on a Star Wars game of its own.

When the Visceral news was announced, executive VP of EA worldwide studios Patrick Soderlund said, "Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe. In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design."

This sparked concerns about the future of triple-A single-player games. CEO Andrew Wilson denied that the moves were made because it was a single-player game that needed to become a live-service game. "It was more about, 'How do we get to a point where the overall gameplay experience was right for players?'" he said, adding that some of the assets and content Visceral had created might still be used in the new iteration of the game.

Soderlund also denied single-player was to blame; like Wilson, he pointed to the issue of quality, which was seemingly reinforced by a Kotaku report at the time. Subsequently, CFO Blake Jorgensen suggested the linear, single-player nature was at least partially to blame, saying, "As we kept reviewing the game, it continued to look like a much more linear game [which] people don't like as much today as they did five years ago or 10 years ago."

"Online features" is when it lost me. We need an OFFLINE Star Wars Single Player open world game. The success of God Of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are examples of how a successful Single Player games are. Some of us are sick of everything being Multiplayer or online based. EA seems to think every freakin' game needs online in it, and they are WRONG.

@DarthLod: exactly. We've had Star Wars The Old Republic MMO and then two Online shooters in the Battlefront reboots. Its about fucking time for a single player RPG or good single player SW game, which we haven't gotten since Force Unleashed 1 and before that KOTOR 2.

This is going to be great. I can't wait for it to be delayed a few times then eventually cancelled.

EA buys license for games then screws it all up. Buy a developer and turn them into trash.

The world needs a new SINGLE PLAYER RPG open world Star Wars game. I don't see EA delivering on it. If this is online only, forget about it.

EA Should shut down themselves from all the damage that has been done in gaming industry as such. A tyrant ruining franchises in gameplay wise, and not just franchises. Talented visual artists, but not enough people, or not giving enough time to create long lasting game story wise or content wise. Disappointed since the the year when they shut down Westood Studios that made the original Command and Conquer.

Rarely there is a game that is distributed through EA that is good, such as Mass Effect 1-2 and maybe 3 too. 4 was actually decent, somewhat playable and enjoyable, feature wise I liked it, but hella bugy.

@vgdork: what has bioware really done since EA bought them? couple ok mass effect games. Dragon inquisition was really lame but it did get game of the year with no competition. Biowares greatest games was Baldurs gate 1 and 2 and KOTOR1. Nothing on those games level since

Open world, but only if you pay for each city that you want to visit, oh and don't forget you have to buy some kind of transport as well.

"How do we get to a point where the overall gameplay experience was right for players?'"

Have someone else make the game. Because then, while it might not look quite as good visually, at least it won't be infested with greed and incompetence.

Why it smells like we gonna have a Destiny like game with Star Wars setting? they'll skin a battle royale scheme on Star Wars skin if the novely wasn't starting to wear off with such fierce competition.

@Runeweaver: Problem is Kathleen Kennedy will probably just give the license off to Ubisoft or Activision instead of letting developers come to her with good ideas. A Star Wars game with For Honor's combat though imagine how epic that would be.

@playstationzone: Of course they are !

Big publishers claimed RTS are dead, and they are still selling

Big publishers claimed Horror games are dead, and they are still selling.

If big publishers are to be believed we would all be playing VR games ... on our tablets ... buying lootboxes. And that's simply not the case :)

Screw this game. Seriously, the whole live service bandwagon has gone too far! And the BS are stunning. Wilson said we did it for the players and then Jorgenass pretty much dropped the bomb when he blatantly stated what everyone pretty much knew. It was not monetizable. Go bankrupt EA!

The Force Unleashed 2 is still the best singleplayer PC Star Wars game to have come out in "recent" years (2010) and that's saying something. It can't hold a lightsaber shaped candle to the mid-early 2000 games like KotOR and Jedi Knight, but still seems much better than anything else released afterwards. Perhaps in 2020 or so, a whole 10 years after TFU 2, I might find another good SP PC Star Wars game.

@Hurvl: I'm not so sure I really agree on that one being the best single player Star Wars one in recent years, but it has been one of the only single player ones. Has there even been one since then?

@Jarten: I don't think so, but don't know for sure, that's why I made such a "unlikely to be approved by others" comment, so they would "set me straight", lol. The last time I had fun with a Star Wars game was with TFU 2.
