Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Writer Says Story Is "Very Important" At Studio

Explains why the game is entirely single-player.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a new story in the Star Wars universe, coming from noted Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment. Chris Avellone, the writer behind Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords, recently opened up about his experience writing this new Star Wars entry, and said this element is "very important" to Respawn. He's also tweeted that he's done with his portion of the game.

"I hope [the six writers] are listed in the reveal because I accidentally said 'I've wrapped this up,' but there are other writers and I'm not even the lead guy," Avellone said in an interview with VG247. "Story was very important to Respawn. I think they do a good job of introducing various narrative layers into their games already, but they think the story is an important part of what they perceive to be a Star Wars game. That's one of the reasons I like Respawn, because when they tackle something like that, they understand what the important points are."

Now Playing: Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order — Official Story Reveal Trailer

The lead narrative designer for Jedi: Fallen Order is Aaron Contreras, who previously was the narrative designer for Mafia 3. "I think they brought me on because I have a pretty strong Star Wars pedigree so I'd probably be able to just jump right in," Avellone continued. "And I was, which was good. It didn't require a ton of new research."

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is scheduled to release November 15 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. There's quite a few people and places we want to see in the game. Respawn hasn't announced scheduled platforms for Jedi: Fallen Order, but the game is presumably releasing for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

I'm optimistic, but will wait for reviews before I even consider buying it. If it's a cutscene heavy, 10 hour long gameplay that's all action, I'll pass. If it's more in line with Tomb Raider games, which are also Action-Adventure, but have a lot of depth to them and could easily run 20-30 hours, I'm in.

How sad is it that games have fallen so far as an industry that we have to be reassured that there's a story and they worked hard on it, or that they won't add gambling and cheap microtransactions to the game? Pathetic.

@Sound_Demon Sounds like EA's been missing us quite a bit or they wouldn't have even made this game. Not all of us are like you, a chump that just takes whatevers given to them because of fanboy bs. Some of us have taste and standards and ethics.:

Chris Avellone is involved? Forget Episode IX, it's time for some quality writing in Star Wars again!

I hope this game is single player friendly and not corrupted with microtransactions, but my expectations are pretty low at this point.

I have enjoyed the story telling in KOTOR 1/2 and Jedi Fallen games.

But even a perfect story can be detroyed by presentation.

Game breaking bugs, microtransactions, day one downloads, etc, can ruin a game, EA can ruin one easily.

@jenovaschilld: day one downloads are an inconvenience, don't get me wrong it's mildly annoying but you're waiting for the game to install anyway so what's an extra 10/20 minutes? it'll still never take as long as RDR2 did to install

@jenovaschilld: This statement is truer than ever. Apparently the reason why Apex Legends turned out so well is because EA didn't know Respawn was working on the game, and, by the time they did, it was too late for them to put their greedy mitts on it.

@Barighm: bullshit, how does Ea not know that they've been developing a game using their money? lower priority than the big titles? sure, but respawn gains nothing by developing Apex in secret

@normanislost: Exactly of course they knew, I think respawn just gets more creative control then dice/bioware now

I do hope this ends up being something noteworthy. I know this is EA and EA really fudges things up in a lot of their games, but just once I would love an incredible Star Wars game in this day and age (Battlefront 2 has gotten better I will say, though not to the extent of pre-EA or what Free Radical had). I will say they have me very intrigued though just from the time frame (Would be great if they took inspiration from the Republic Commando books too).

@Smosh150: EA games can actually be very good if EA has nothing to do with the game's development.

As the old saying goes: "the proof of the pudding is in the tasting". I've often heard of these "very important" features of games while they're in development, only for them to be cut before release (because they don't fit with the aggressive monetization that AAA publishers are fond of these days).

I'd love for EA to prove that they actually learned something from their recent string of "failures" (Anthem, MEA, and to some extent Battlefield V). Prove me wrong, EA. Prove to me that you're still willing to craft a good game that can make bank just on being good.

Remember "to much story" of the last game?, if anyone is deceived for this game, he/she deserve it.
