Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Review Roundup

Is the Force strong with this one?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is just the third Star Wars title of this console generation--it follows the first and second Battlefront games for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the same systems that Fallen Order is available on. The game, made by Titanfall and Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment, puts you in the Force-sensitive boots of Jedi warrior Cal Kestis and sends you out into a post-Revenge of the Sith version of the Star Wars universe.

Reviews have gone up alongside the release of the game, including our own 8/10 take. "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the latest game in the canon, is one of the better offerings specifically because it tries to look beyond the trappings of Star Wars," our critic Phil Hornshaw says. "It's not just another Jedi power fantasy, although wielding the Force with skill and resolve will certainly make you feel powerful. Like the best Star Wars games, it's one that adds to the ideas of the films and other material, exploring new corners of the galaxy while focusing on the core themes of the franchise: knowing yourself, fighting your own darkness, and braving adversity with the help of friends."

Other reviews have also mostly been positive so far, with most outlets praising this as a return to form for Star Wars, which hasn't received a substantial single-player game in some time. There's also some consensus, though, that the game can feel a bit rough or become frustrating in some sections.

We've rounded up a few of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's reviews below. For more, be sure to check out GameSpot's sister site Metacritic for a look at what even more critics made of the game.

  • Game: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Developer: Respawn Entertainment
  • Release date: November 15
  • Price: $60 / £50 / $68 AUD

GameSpot - 8/10

"But especially as it wears on, Fallen Order becomes perhaps the strongest conception of what playing as a Jedi Knight ought to really be like. It's true that Fallen Order borrows liberally from other action games, but those elements work together with Respawn's combat and environment design, and a story that finds humanity in the Force and in its characters, to hone in on what makes the world of Star Wars worthy of revisiting again and again. Even with some rough edges, Fallen Order represents one of the most compelling game additions to the Star Wars franchise in years." - Phil Hornshaw [Full Review]

IGN - 9/10

"It’s been ages since we got a great single-player Star Wars action game, but Jedi: Fallen Order makes up for a lot of lost time. A strong cast sells a dark story while keeping things fun and loyal to Star Wars lore, and fast, challenging combat mixes with energetic platforming, decent puzzles, and diverse locations to explore for an all-around amazing game." - Brian Shea [Full Review]

Game Informer - 8.75/10

"Despite these numerous little problems, Respawn’s maiden voyage with Star Wars is largely a success. I couldn’t put this game down, both for the thrill of exploring and wanting to see where the story took me next. The inspirations taken from Dark Souls, Uncharted, and Metroid Prime unite to create something unique that just happens to work incredibly well for this beloved license. Like most starships in this universe, Jedi: Fallen Order could use a little polish, but the rust doesn’t hold it back from roaring with excitement." - Andrew Reiner [Full Review]

Gamesradar+ - 4/5

"There's plenty to like about Fallen Order, but it should come with the caveat that it's slightly rougher than I was expecting. I've played the entire game on PS4 Pro and glitches and framerate stuttering have cropped up enough to warrant mentioning. One patch has already been released before launch, and EA has told us that another is on the way, but it did give my initial playthrough a rougher-than-ideal feel." - Ben Tyrer [Full Review]

USGamer - 3.5/5

"Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order comes painfully close to being the best action game of the year, but it ultimately falls short due to pacing problems and a host of technical issues. Still, this is the first step into a larger world for a franchise that has persistently struggled since its acquisition by EA." - Kat Bailey [Full Review]

Eurogamer - No Score

"I'll admit crunching a Souls-like in less than four days is an unnatural and grueling experience: I imagine if I'd played Fallen Order over several months, I would have been less frustrated, but probably still bored. It's such a shame, as Fallen Order has an incredible gameplay experience at its core, with fantastic environments and well-directed action sequences. Yet it's unable to sustain this thanks to some fundamental design problems." - Emma Kent [Full Review]

This game makes me miss how gaming used to be, when the defacto standard was just a start-to-finish experience. No friends lists, no currency, no credit cards, no servers, no sign-ins... Just a straight up game to play THROUGH.

Absolutely mind-blowing something like this came from an EA publishing.

This game is the most Star Wars thing to happen to the franchise in years. Give the next movie to Respawn.

Well I think the entire background of gamespot changing and several SW articles leads me to actually not trust the opinion of this website.

it reeks of EA$

Hmm. Looks good and reviews are good. Saber combat not as good as jedi academy but I'm in it for the story, environments and force powers more than anything. Might give it a shot but will get it from somewhere cheaper than steam.

@illusivepickledonionman: Really? Has it been a while since you've played Academy? I mean, I can't think fondly enough of that game, but one of the places it fell so short was saber combat. It was literally just the character flailing his lightsaber around like a toddler with a stick lol. There was no real control you just sort of held attack and moved close to your enemy randomly until it killed him. Jedi vs. Sith battles were just complete shit-shows where there was no skill or thought behind your attacks.

Still... I 'do' feel like there is something missing there that was present in Academy. Dismemberment... obviously, especially if you're playing JA on PC, but something else I can't quite put my finger on...

Sounds like the consensus from the reviews that have already piled in is that Respawn has done their due diligence in delivering a worthy installment to a franchise in desperate need of an engrossing single player experience.

I for one am happy Fallen Order is getting the love it has especially when we live in a time where single player games are being seen as an afterthought by some of the big name companies out there.

Combine that with the fact that EA is the publisher behind it (a publisher notorious for moving away from single player experiences.) I think even the most jaded and ardent critic of EA has to be rooting for Fallen Order on some level.

I look forward to giving it a spin but that probably won’t be for a while considering I’m still knee deep in Death Stranding and patiently waiting for Shenmue 3 (Hey, it’s only been 18 years 😉 ).

Regardless, Respawn should be commended for delivering something many were skeptical they could pull off.

@videogameninja: There's something incredibly refreshing about it's straight-forward "Here's a game, press start to play it, go through the adventure, congratulations you finished the game." setup. It's particularly standout surprising given that it's EA... but more than anything this just makes me miss when this was the standard.

It's not shoving my friends list in my face, or asking me to login to anything, or wanting me to pull out a credit card, or telling me I've been disconnected from a server, or any of that nonsense...

Just like a good movie or book... it's a contained, start-to-finish experience.

Also waiting for Shenmue 3... but I'm soooo behind in catching up on 1 & 2... been 20 years since I went through the things so I want a full recap hahaha.

@skyhighgam3r:

Couldn’t agree more!

In regards to Shenmue, have you managed to pick up the Shenmue 1& 2 collection? I purposely purchased it a few months ago and just recently finished it in anticipation for the third installment. If you’re too excited for Shenmue 3 then perhaps some kind of recap on Youtube might be in order.

@videogameninja: I picked up 1&2 again last year when they came out and went like 1/3rd of the way through 1, then forgot about them lol. I started playing 1 again last week, easily onto Disc 3 now... but I just read Shenmue 3 isn't going to finish the story... and honestly... I don't think I can put myself through it again.

The first time I played #1 the ending felt so sudden to me, and I was heartbroken when I read that #2 wouldn't be coming to the Dreamcast in the states. I felt so happy when #2 showed up on XBOX, but when that ending left things unresolved again... it was a long time before I accepted we'd just never see the conclusion.

I was 13... I'm 31... I grew up, went to college, watched my own father die, got married, bought a home... I almost had a kid, and if I had she would be as old as I was when I first played Shenmue...

I don't think I can handle this game ending on another cliffhanger and having to rely on hopes and dreams to ever see the ending.

the problem is to many people give a damn what critics think me I am either getting a game or not getting a game critics and reviewer's hold no sway on me.

fallen order is a no buy for me but that's just because I never buy ply or watch anything Disney.

@dragoonmike: Seriously. Anyone unable to read several reviews while taking the opinions of the reviewer with a grain of salt, but then using those opinions and, more importantly, the facts provided about the game itself to make a determination of whether they would personally like to play it is an infantile twerp. There's just no rational or legitimate reason for people taking reviews so personally...or going so far as to just make crazed, delusional assumptions about bribes/payoffs or whatever else as excuses for why the reviews aren't saying what they would rather they be saying. "OMFG, all the reviews aren't what I wanted so it must be that some nefarious plot was afoot, not that my opinion is in the minority or an outlier!!!"

Scores started out very well, but the second round of reviews have lopped off about 10 points from the score on Metacritic. These reviews are saying the game has serious technical issues. This is a key point since EA games with technical issues never really get fixed.

@Barighm: Not to mention the baffling trend that big developers have where they release unfinished or buggy games just to meet a deadline and patch stuff out later. Kind of makes me miss the cartridge days, where you had no patches and had to release it right the first time.
