Star Wars Han Solo Film Loses Its Directors 11 Months Before Release

"That's not how the Force works!"

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street), directors of the forthcoming untitled spinoff Han Solo film, are no longer working on the project. The pair announced that their leave is caused by a difference in visions.

"Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project," Phil Lord and Christopher Miller said in a statement. "We normally aren’t fans of the phrase 'creative differences' but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew."

The forthcoming film explores how everyone's favorite space smuggler's youthful adventures and how he got the name 'Han Solo.' Principal photography for the film began this past February.

"Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we've decided to part ways," Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said. "A new director will be announced soon." At this time, the film is still scheduled to be released in May 2018.

"How he got the name Han Solo". I don't think I've ever wondered how he was named Han Solo.... Was he not born and then named Han Solo?

Probably not enough pandering for whiny self-entitled brats. Since Han isn't person of colour or transgender he should be just written off from star wars, since he's not "divers" enough. UGH.

Yuck no one asked for a young Han Solo movie.

I find it odd the cast of this movie is so "white" when Rogue One was so diverse. I don't care one way or the other, it's just a bit surprising.

@csward: Why does it matter? That's the Star Wars universe. Nobody asked for colored people and chicks with dicks to be in our favorite movies. Nobody should cater to that.

@jayskoon93: News flash!! People of color and other ethnic backgrounds were already in the original Star Wars movie. And while Lucas is no "poster board" for diversity in his film, the idea of a "diverse" universe did not allude him with all of the different forms of alien life portray in his films. The world is a diverse place - get over it.

@tomscifi69: I'm very aware of that. All I was TRYING to say was, I have no issue with a movie cast being diverse racially and otherwise. I just don't think that an entire series familiar casting should be changed to cater to people who can't simply respect the film and its content regardless of the folks playing in the movie. It's silly to say you won't watch a film unless there's more black people in it or more women. That is not what you should be focused on.

@jayskoon93: Understood. However the way you wrote it came off very very, how should I say it "not flattering." IMHO, I don't think that has ever been a sole focus for these new movies. Just because Rogue One was very diverse does not mean that every new SW movie going forward is going to do that. I am not sure where these ideas came from that all of a sudden SW is trying to meet some politically correct racial or life style quota. That has never been the case and Kennedy (and LucasFilm) have never expressed that in their "vision" of SW going forward. It is, however, nice to see that the movies that we have grown to love over the years have evolve to reflect the diverse world we already live in. The world has always been this way whether people like it or not, agree with it or not - and that is what makes this creative development process both fun and interesting to watch.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller probably realized this was a stupid idea and wanted to bail out before shit hits the fan.

"Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street"... but fired by one of the major people responsible for Ep. VII and rogue one because she didn't like where they were going with it...... hmmmm. I'm going to have to say that this was 'lose-lose' any way you look at it.. : |

It's never promising to hear a director leave, but... Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street. I'm not devastated.

@Prats1993: As a lifelong fan of Lego (the toy), I thought the movie was pretentious meme infected garbage designed to be watched by people with ADHD. Good riddance to these directors.

@Prats1993: Lego movie was great, 21 jump Street?? NO get that crap outta here lol

and it isn't promising to hear the director quit or was fired but a lot of movies this happens, DC's The Flash movie is up in the air now cus it's gone through 2 or 3 directors?? all cus BVS failed and I think the last director was like frack this and left, the one[s] before that just hit roadblocks in development.....probably buckled under Snyder.....

as for SW I wasn't excited about this from the start....please give me a Dengar movie or Zuckas or something......smugglers, bounty hunters, let's get a scum of the universe movie....let's see the other side.....that was one of the best parts of the Darth Bane books, seeing the other side.....Darth Bane kicked ass.....

Initial reaction of most people would probably be "this is going to suck".

But look at the extensive reshoots for Rogue One that Disney demanded. And Rogue One is probably only second in quality to Empire. So...

Let's wait and see.
