Star Wars Gets A New Animated Series Called Forces Of Destiny

Starring Princess Leia, Rey, Jyn, and other heroines.

Star Wars is getting a new series of animated shorts, and a whole toy line to go with it. Each episode of the upcoming Star Wars Forces of Destiny will be 2-3 minutes in length and will feature the major heroines of the Star Wars universe. Check out the brand new preview above.

Some top Star Wars stars are lending their voice talents too: Daisy Ridley is reprising her role as Rey, Felicity Jones as Jyn, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.

"Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia's heroism, Rey's courage, or Ahsoka's tenacity," says Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars."

There will be a toy line launched alongside the series, along with books, apparel, and bedding featuring the animated version of the characters.

"From Princess Leia to Sabine Wren, Star Wars heroines are unique, and we wanted to represent that in the product line for Star Wars Forces of Destiny," said Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of Disney's consumer products and interactive media division.

"The result is the creation of our new 'Adventure Figures' that celebrate the power and stories of these incredible characters and allow kids to recreate their most heroic moments at home."

Those 'Adventure Figures' are 11-inch action figures of Rey, Jyn Erso, Princess Leia, Sabine Wren, and other characters like BB-8, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren etc.

The Forces of Destiny series of shorts launches in July on Disney's YouTube account. Eight additional shorts will premiere on the Disney Channel in the fall. The show will also be featured at this weekend's Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, and GameSpot will be there. Keep it locked to GameSpot Universe for full coverage of Star Wars Celebration.

OMG, what did they do to Sabine? I think I'm quite content with the Disney Infinity figure I got.

Of course, because every piece of Star Wars (except that new piece of Han Solo garbage) is being marketed solely for woman. I think its f****ng lame honestly.

That Leia toy looks like something out of nightmares. I hope it doesn't come alive at night to murder kids.

On a different note, isn't it about time Disney considered making a live action TV show?

Looking at those 'figures' I'd say that this was an attempt by Disney to endear more girls to the franchise. They look like those weird fashion dolls that parents bought for their kids.

Couldn't help but notice some rustled jimmies in the comments here. Let's get them untangled.

I'd say they promote these characters in a constructive way. These female characters are talked about as characters, not as their genders. Which is completely different from the feministic way of doing it, which would be more along the lines of something like

"Star Wars has a lot of strong and independent female characters that go their own way and do their own thing, who don't need those male main characters in their lives to be great, and now young girls can find out more about their favourite heroines and blah blah blah... "

I mean, this had none of that feminist buzzword-barrage. The series features male characters as well, so it's not something exclusionary. They just presented female characters in their initial promotional content.

Everything is fine. There is no need to feel that your nerdy boy-stuff is threatened by cootie-politics. There is no need to REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

@KaptenHaddock:

Agreed. In fact, I was going to state almost the exact same sentiment (just nicer,heh), before deciding against it. Just didn't want to add the headaches of fair socio-politics to my normal everyday-life headaches. So credits to you, good sir/ma'am, for taking it up anyway.

@KaptenHaddock: My problem with it is that it's clearly nothing more than an advertisement campaign for the new dolls. They're riding on the "strong female" character stuff just to get money from the parents of young female Star Wars fans. The SW toy market is currently dominated with boys, so they're obviously wanting to get girls to buy their crap as well.

@joupena: exactly. That's the only reason, just to market their bullsh!t. Like how they said they are putting a gay character in it..and they are doing it for the sole purpose of marketing

Don't get me wrong, it's obviously just as corporate as you describe it. My point is that it's not the feminist propaganda that some have claimed, as far as I see.

On the initial premise alone, I'm sold at "...heroines...". On the final execution though, I guess I'll have to see...

BTW, on a lighter note, @Disney, I noticed how funny (& cute) R2 and BB are behind their mistresses, Princess Leia and Rey, respectively. So I can't help but wonder, just how awesome it would've been if you actually had mighty K2 and Chopper behind their own mistresses, Jyn and Sabine! Hah.

Sounds kind of like they are trying to do their own version of the old The Clone Wars show(Short time length and traditional graphics[Though they look poor compared to the old TCW imo]).

I don't know, it sounds strange and it looks like they are trying to promote feminism rather than actually focusing on all characters, but that is just my assertion based on a small amount of information. Either way, doesn't look as interesting as previous shows like Rebels, old TCW, and the more recent TCW.

I would kill for a show like the old TCW, that was and is one of my favorite pieces that came out of the Star Wars franchise. I remember trying my damnedest to get home in time to watch a five minute episode. It sounds silly looking back on it, but I loved that show so much(Even re-watched it not too long ago).

@Smosh150:

I know what you're talking about, buddy. That mini-series of "short films" was the very definition of short and sweet. The art direction was super old-school "anime-ish" like Samurai Jack's (which is not necessarily a bad thing,since it's from the same creators), but the plot, production values, pacing, voice acting, action and everything else was second to none! Even years after its original airing, I would literally wake myself up for a rare midnight marathon re-run! All the episodes were great, but do you remember that one where a small squad of Jedi (plural form) were trapped behind enemy lines and were being hunted down one by one (by Gen. Grievous,I believe)? And in their darkest hour, when they were on the brink of absolute fear & insanity & despair and starting to fight amongst themselves, the wounded squad leader and Master slowly and quietly stands up and says something like, "We fight on... for we, are Jedi.", and they all, Padawans and Knights alike, calmly smile and fought to the bitter end...

@June-GS: Oh yea, just every moment of that show was intense. My favorite part of that episode(Or scene considering the length) was when they introduced the ARC troopers(Which just completely made my day when I first saw it).

I honestly didn't know it was from the same creators of Samurai Jack, but the similarity just makes it pretty obvious. I really miss that show...
