Now Playing: Star Wars Episode 9: C-3PO Actor Finishes Filming - GameSpot Universe News Update

Star Wars: Episode IX has wrapped filming, marking the end of what Disney has dubbed the "Skywalker saga." In an emotional pair of tweets, director JJ Abrams and actor John Boyega shared a photo and thanked the cast and crew.

The photo in both tweets shows actors Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac having a good hug in costume on what appears to be a desert backdrop. The three play the principal characters of the new trilogy: Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron, respectively.

"It feels impossible, but today wrapped photography on Episode IX," said Abrams. "There is no adequate way to thank this truly magical crew and cast. I'm forever indebted to you all."

Boyega expressed similar sentiments.

Abrams directed the first film of the new trilogy, The Force Awakens, and helped set the course for Disney's ownership of the franchise. Rian Johnson directed the second film, The Last Jedi. Episode IX (title yet to be revealed) was set to be helmed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, but that fell apart due to creative differences and Abrams returned to close out the trilogy.

With the end of the Skywalker saga coming later this year, it's unclear exactly what direction Disney will move with the franchise afterward. The company has pumped the brakes on its spin-off anthology films, after Solo disappointed at the box office and Disney CEO Bob Iger has suggested fans got fatigued by too much Star Wars. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still preparing to direct his own trilogy of films, but we're not sure where in the universe those take place.

Meanwhile, the company is preparing to launch its own streaming service, Disney+, which will have its own slate of original shows: The Mandalorian, a Rogue One prequel starring Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), and a new season of The Clone Wars.

Never thought I’d say this of a great love, but SW has just become straight trash. The original trilogy understood mythology; it understood character and world-building.

The prequels faltered hard, with an over-reliance on effects and some painfully bad writing/acting, with some exceptions (thanks, Liam Neeson).

The new batch of movies are hitting new lows. I’d say the acting is actually a notch better than the prequels, but damn, the dialogue and plot (of TLJ) are bumbled so horribly they don’t even resemble SW to me anymore. TFA was actually a competent movie and reasonably enjoyable. It’s the only SW movie outside the original trilogy that I can watch without wincing. It did suffer from being overly-familiar, but I’ll gladly take that over this latest round of turds.

I’m willing to be proven wrong. I’m actually a big Abrams fan, but it’s a hard sell at this point.

Thank god I was starting to get bored.... Solo wasn't bad though as a stand alone..

Yeah! We managed to ruin Star Wars! Nobody is going to watch this movie. Come on guys and girls. Give me a big hug. This wasn't easy. Once upon a time in a galaxy not so far away this was the most successful franchise. But we ended it! It's over. Everyone hates it now. The dark side won. I am just gonna cry. Bring it on.

Avatar image for nabinator

@michaeldark: Liberals are the darkside, and they've taken over this franchise. So much so, they decided to throw the Jedi/Sith lore right out the window. Sounds like exactly the kind of thing a Sith in power would do.

Disney = The Galactic Empire

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@michaeldark: We're talking about a fan base that watched every film in the horrid prequel trilogy. They'll watch Episode 9.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: Doesn't mean they'll enjoy it. I watched TLJ after all

"With the end of the Skywalker saga coming later this year, it's unclear exactly what direction Disney will move with the franchise afterward." Seriously?? I mean theres 100 stories you can tell. You can tell the story of Han Solo and Leia Organa and there son. Theres a story. The story of how Darth Maul came to be. Theres another story. The books have hundreds of different storys. Or how about the story of Luke saving mara jade and them getting married. And they have a son called ben skywalker. Thats another story. And bens life was very interesting. The people at disney need to read a book. Theres literally stories within stories.

Avatar image for Decoy77

@chrono99: Except for the fact when Disney took over they made almost all of that non-canon anymore.

I hope Episode IX just picks up at from the end of The Force Awakens, and just ignores any of the plot points of The Last Jedi.

So Luke and Snoke will still be alive, and no one will have heard of Rose.

Avatar image for nabinator

I suppose Lucas is looking pretty good right about now

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: No. the prequel saga will always be trash.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: Prequels were great. And even more so alongside the new trilogy.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: Wow, so we’ve come the end times. People think they like those awful movies.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: Nah you just get told what to like and what not to like and swallow it. Besides, Revenge of the Sith was amazingly made.

Also, is this you down below?

"Excited to see how it all ends. SW “fans” are petulent children who dont like anything that doesnt inflate their egos. The trilogy so far has been excellent. Abrams is gonna end it with a bang."

Now kindly **** off, lol. You've ousted your opinion to be pure shit

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: lol, enjoy jar jar binks and yipeee and “i hate sand.”

How did i miss those masterful moments? Lmfao.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: 1000x better than Captain "lets sacrifice everyone and tell no one the plan", Leia Organa suddenly becoming Superman, or Rose's "saving what we love" after stopping Finn from saving what he loves. And dear lord, the butcheratization of Luke Skywalker. Not even Mark Hamill was willing to let that one go. I wouldn't either, if I was forced to milk some alien titties.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: You need your head examined if you think anything in the prequels is better than new trilogy. I think the Plinkett reviews say it all, and if you still think those movies are any good, you're hopeless. No wonder you can't recognize decent acting and coherent storytelling.

A superior not telling the wild flyboy her plan? What's wrong with that unless you have a problem with a person of authority not submitting to a subordinate. And Leia having force powers, you mean a skywalker has force powers? CRAZY! How on earth is that even possible? And Rose, wow, admitting that love is greater than hate, and that destroying your enemy isn't always the answer? That's insane, who would believe that nonsense?

You're right, Jar Jar Binks is MUCH better than all that logical insanity.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: "Excited to see how it all ends. SW “fans” are petulent children who dont like anything that doesnt inflate their egos. The trilogy so far has been excellent. Abrams is gonna end it with a bang," - You

Kinda says it all mate

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: I see you can't defend the prequels. Good, they're not defend-able.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: Nope, just pointing out your opinion is pure shit. Here's another cracker:

"When you're ready for mature storytelling TLJ will be waiting." - also you

I could do this all day.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@nabinator: Enjoy your idiotic prequels. I think they suit your 5th grade education.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@nabinator: Best thing about Lucas was he took it humbly when fans complained about his movies while the staff a Lucasfilm & Rian Johnson actively attack fans on twitter about the new movies lol.

Avatar image for nabinator

@gamingdevil800: I remember he took it very humble. Creating Star Wars was his passion. His art. It wasn't just about the money, but crafting great stories. Disney, on the other hand, you can tell they're treating the franchise blatantly like a business.

On the other hand, we should hardly be surprised. Many people saw this coming, upon the sale of SW to Disney. I remember people typing comments in old articles just like this.

For better or worse, I enjoy The Force Awaken by Abram. The Last Jedi wasn't the worst Star Wars film, just bad writing and Rian Johnson could have done better. I for one looking to see how will Abram end the new Star Wars trilogy and whatever happens, you can bet we'll see Luke again in Jedi ghost no doubt.

And once I'm done watching Episode IX, I'm gonna retired myself from watching any future Star Wars film cause I'm just not excited for Star Wars content anymore but the games, I will still be into, just not the films.

Avatar image for nabinator

@davillain-: My expectations for this are extremely tepid, thanks to Episode 8. Hated that movie.

I have more faith in Abrams, but I don't know how he's gonna salvage this. Ep 8 destroyed a lot of Ep 7's direction

After a lot of thought about the Star Wars conundrum I have come to the conclusion that the reason that I just cannot support the new stuff is that I cannot trust the new movies. I have two major complaints about The Last Jedi. The first is that Luke Skywalker was altered in a way that simply does not align with anything that was ever in his character’s personality. The second is that the rules of the universe were arbitrarily altered. Specifically the scene in which hyper drive is used to destroy the large ship. The lack of care for the Star Wars universe is abundant in both The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens, but I think that those two examples illustrate the problems of the new movies most clearly.

Aside from my definite dislike for the direction that the story has taken this lack of continuity is what keeps me from ever setting aside my antipathy for those two movies, and giving another Star Wars Story movie or television series a chance. How can I care about characters or situations when they will most likely not align with the core storyline or characters in a logical way? And even if one particular movie or television series does conform it will need to live in the same universe that the other bad stuff lives in.

I accept George’s 6 movies, and Rogue One as Star Wars. The rest is either bad or inextricably related to the bad stuff. I wish that I could like the new movies and television shows, but I just can’t.

The sad thing is, I know I'm still going to see it, even if I wanted to boycott it after the disaster VIII was. It's inevitable, damn you Star Wars.

Avatar image for Export

Please make the ending with Luke wakes up and says " wow , what a bad dream that was"

This is would be the only acceptable ending for me

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

Excited to see how it all ends. SW “fans” are petulent children who dont like anything that doesnt inflate their egos. The trilogy so far has been excellent. Abrams is gonna end it with a bang.

Avatar image for nabinator

@Bread_or_Decide: **** off Rian

Avatar image for fackman1984

@Bread_or_Decide: Rian... Is that you under a false name?

Avatar image for Export

@Bread_or_Decide: Abrams is going putting it out of its mercy , I will upvote it , if you think he going to save it . Hahaha oh man , that funny . They officially killed it in VIII , Destroying the everything that Star wars is build on . Destroying the belief of the force to Luke skywalker the greatest jedi to milking cows , you dont see his greatest like yoda in Star wars Ep 2 to stupid jokes at the beginning of the movie to light speed wiping out the fleet . Just think about that one . In the hundreds of years of wars and no one thought of it except some stupid woman who let the whole fleet died when she could of save them sooner . Seriously This storyline is trash and sad .

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@Export: Oh look, one of those “fans” i was talking about.

Avatar image for Bread_or_Decide

@Metallicwolf29: Star wars doesn't exist to fellate you in the theater for two hours. Take your petty nit picks elsewhere. When you're ready for mature storytelling TLJ will be waiting. If not the prequels are there for you.

Can't wait to not see this!

Personally, I am happy just to have an SW movie to go watch. Gives me something to look forward too.

Avatar image for masterfrankgrimes

The Solo movie was better than any of this new trilogy at least.

Avatar image for TaronAroyan

Can't wait for the new garbage to crash and burn. I watched the force awakens, but was shocked when people were clapping in the end. That was shameless reap off and fans let them get away with that. The last Jedi was fans doing as far as I am concerned. They should have rebelled after Episode 7 and maybe there was a chance for trilogy, but they were suckered in with nostalgia BS. The closer we get to release the more marketing will be using to get the old fans into the cinemas and if the fan base falls for these crap, then they deserve to be taken advantage off. I didn't even pirate Episode 8 cause that garbage wasn't worth the space on my hard rive or my time. Rogue One was a good movie, but that is about it and the only reason Solo wasn't that bad is because after last Jedi anything would have seem better.
