Star Wars Episode 9 Will Be Directed By JJ Abrams

The Force Awakens director will return to the Star Wars saga.

JJ Abrams will return to the Star Wars saga to direct and co-write Episode IX. Abrams previously made 2015's hugely successful The Force Awakens and will replace Colin Trevorrow, who left Episode IX last week.

The news was confirmed by Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, who said in a statement: "With The Force Awakens, JJ delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy." Star Wars Episode IX is set for a May 2019 release.

Trevorrow's departure from Episode IX was announced by Lucasfilm last week. A statement explained that "we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ." However, a subsequent report by Vulture suggested however that Kennedy fired Trevorrow because he was "difficult."

The next Star Wars movie to hit theaters will be The Last Jedi, which arrives in December. It had been rumored that director Rian Johnson was in the running to take over from Trevorrow, but earlier this week he denied that this was the case.

Not particularly stoked about this, I gotta say... I was kind of liking the idea of a different director for each of them, keeping them from going stale with everyone's different styles.

@KaptenHaddock: It definitely was a neat idea

@superklyph:

Yeah. Having seen The Last jedi, this backfired.

Great. Now we're gonna get some of his fan fiction again. "...and then Rey transformed into the Legendary Super Jedi!"

It will be titled Return of the Ewoks.

So it'll be just as bad as The Force Awakens.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Fine by me, just don't kill my favorite characters again. Or make another Death Star.

@Daian: I won't be surprised if Luke dies in 8 without a lightsaber duel actually happening.

@gamingdevil800: I guess you weren't surprised then.

Darth Vader: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Luke Skywalker: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Me: Fk they are going to do another death star now...

If they actually copy return of the jedi I will be so pissed off. If they have Rey & Kylo fight in front of snoke while the rebels try to destroy the death star or "super death star" with snoke dying by the hands of Kylo Ren then I'm so done with disney star wars. Also if they have some plot line where Finn or one of the rebels gets captured by a Hutt or Captain Phasma in episode 8... ugghhh Jar Jar Abrams.

@gamingdevil800: A lot of drama.

It was kind of given there's no way to replace/demolish the originals. With prequels they did something very different by focusing on all the politics and races and stuff, and we all know the general reaction towards that. And now they are trying to recreate the space opera of the originals. Perhaps a bit too 1:1, but I don't know if there are too many ways to do things so that it's not a cliche by the standards of every non-Star Wars movie or without things being totally wacky

Plus it sort of made sense Force Awakens wanted to shout "Hey Star Wars is back" so excessive homage was a tool. In the 3rd chapter it would just look weird.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Every star wars prequel still made at the box office similar to what the originals did new hope/phantom menace made over a billion, Empire/Attack Of Clones made only 500 million ish and Return of the Jedi made 500 million with Revenge of the sith making 800 million. The prequels downfall was bad writing and some of the decision making. If Lucas had gotten on board James Cameron or one of his director friends to give his script a once over or direct his vision then we would of had better movies. I still appreciate the prequels originality, watching a rehash of the same thing over and over isn't fun for me to watch as a viewer. I hope they speed up the lightsaber duels/make them look more skilled in 8. I would like to see an old republic series but I am worried disney would do death stars and things to ruin that era. Like replace Malgus, Revan, Emperor Valkorian, Satele etc with lame wannabes.

Star Wars is in a weird place right now with the original trilogy, the prequels taking risks with new ideas and the sequels playing it safe by imitating the originals.

GOOD.

Sure, it's a safe choice, but I'm relieved. The whole Han solo debacle and "stupid vehicles" in Ep8 thing has been alarmingly like the cup of poo we were poured w/ Ep.1&2. I have zero issues shoving Star Wars right back up my comfort-hole. Ep7 may have been a ~reboot, but it had a ton of soul, and great performances were directed & edited.

@Pyrosa: I'm mainly worried about Chris Terrio writing it, because he did BvS. They better have original ideas and don't do lame stuff like people instantly learning how to wield the Force and lightsabers. This is the final installment; it should bow out with dignity, originality, and excitement. Doubt that comes from JJ and Terrio, though.
