Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker Trailer Is Here

"We'll always be with you. No one's ever really gone."

The teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker is here. The first look at the hugely-anticipated next Star Wars film was revealed at the franchise's annual Celebration convention, along with its title. It was introduced at the end of a panel discussion by director JJ Abrams and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, and it gives us our first look at the movie and real sense of what to expect. For all the details, check out our Episode 9 trailer breakdown., and read what we think the mysterious title might mean for the franchise.

The trailer opens with Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the desert, a lightsaber in her hand, as she stares down a First Order fighter coming right at her. We hear Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) voice tell her, "We've passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in your now, but this is your fight." She then runs at it, leaping to attack.

Now Playing: Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker Teaser Trailer

The teaser also shows brief glimpses of many characters, from Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) cutting down foes with his lightsaber to Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) laughing while piloting the Millennium Falcon. The short tease also includes footage of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher)'s role in the film, which looks to include a touching moment with Rey. Though Fisher died before production of the film began, unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is incorporated to complete her story.

The final image of the trailer sees Rey and her friends together, as Luke's voice is heard once more, saying, "We'll always be with you. No one's ever really gone." Then, creepily, Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) laugh is heard cackling as the title is shown. Check out the teaser above. McDiarmid even appeared on stage at Celebration following the debut of the trailer to demand it be shown again.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 19. Abrams returned to direct after helming 2015's The Force Awakens, although he wasn't the first choice of director. Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow was initially hired, but he left the movie in September 2017.

The film stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, and Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux. New cast members include Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell. The film will also see appearances from a number of Star Wars veterans including Mark Hamill as Luke, Billy Dee Williams as Lando, and Carrie Fisher as Leia. Fisher died before production began, but will appear in footage originally shot for 2017's The Last Jedi.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker isn't the only new Star Wars release that fans have to look forward to this year. It has also been confirmed that the live-action TV show The Mandalorian will be available on the streaming service Disney+ when it launches on November 12.

Star Wars Celebration also promises news and reveals for the new Star Wars game Jedi Fallen Order from the developers of Apex Legends and Titanfall. Go to GameSpot sister site CNET to see a full rundown of what to expect from the show.

You are -

a) In a ship which can fly far above your enemy without limit.

b) Have guns which can shoot your enemy from this distance.

c) your enemy's only weapon is a sword.

So the only logical decision is to fly down to their level and just try to fucking ram them without ever firing your guns.

@dreyhad: I always love when people on the internet claim to be movie/writing/logic experts but are really just armchair s***posters because it gives them an ego boost. In reality it's what is ruining literally everything and sucking all joy and life from all things like a giant black hole of a**holes.

This is a teaser trailer with zero context for literally anything. It's made solely to peak people's interests. It's made to get people talking. This idea that you can divine story, plot or context to anything it shows is ridiculous. The idea you are so desperate to prejudge this teaser, to the point you are literally being willfully ignorant and hypocritical, says more about you than the clip itself. Why do I say that? Uhmmm, gee, I don't know. Maybe if the movies have ever shown someone deflecting bullets with lightsabers we'd have some better idea as to why this scene plays out this way? Maybe if the movies have ever shown these ships not functioning properly, not shooting effectively, missing targets, we'd have a better idea? Hell, maybe if there has even been a movie or two made showing the villain being so unhinged and angry that he makes stupid decisions and mistakes which cause his further fall and undoing, this scene would make more sense?

But sure, let's keep pretending you are the smart, logical one. Because it is very smart and logical to attack a teaser trailer without first knowing and understanding the full context of the events you are seeing.

@sdzald: No, he really doesn't. And only sad people desperately searching for any excuse to crap on this movie IMMEDIATELY believe otherwise. Can't wait for the youtube warriors to start making their 10 million videos and posts all repeating the same stupid BS because they feel a compulsion to crap all over this. Perfectly sane and normal human behavior for people to go frame by frame through this to find any reason to hate on it. Thanks internet!

@ZIMdoom: One nutcase actually said that the opening joke in TLJ was proof the movie sucked. Because he personally did not like a joke.

Then he spends 5 hours hating on TLJ. 5 hours....

@Bread_or_Decide: Sounds about right. LIke all the people who care they don't care at all, but then make dozens if not hundreds of videos or posts or comments about how much they hate it. Perfectly rational behavior from smart people who don't care about something. Personally, if I don't care about something I just go about my day and don't think about it. If I think a movie or show or something sucks and is stupid, I just ignore it and go about my day. I don't devote all my time and energy crapping on it and yelling like a crazy person at people who like it. But that's just me.

@ZIMdoom: Exactly. I would love to walk into a star wars comment section and DISCUSS TLJ instead of having to watch the haters mob the comments and then be forced to yet again defend the film. Its tiresome.

Han was killed, because he was dumb enough to walk out onto a bridge with his sociopath son and ended up tossed off of it with a hole in his chest. Luke died of hemorrhoids due to drinking unpasteurized alien milk. What heroic end awaits Lando? Maybe an undetonated falling bomb will bonk him on the head while he’s floating around in space without a suit. Or C-3PO will rip his limbs off as revenge for his treatment in Cloud City so many years ago. No, I doubt that one. It would indicate that the writers had seen the original movies, and we know that’s never happened. I know! Lando will fall down a short flight of steps, and die. That’s the new Star Wars.

Sorry star wars but enough is enough, I grew up with you and you'll always have a place in my heart, however the recent and repeated train wrecks I've seen cant hide the fact your now nothing more than an excuse to get butts in theatre seats and to hell with the rest. Goodbye and farewell

@fedor: That honour belongs to the Marvel fanbase. Mediocre after mediocre movie with the same tired formula invented to rake in collosal piles of money year after year. And the fans just eat it up. Every single movie is the so-called second coming of Christ, and after the gazillionth movie are still not tired of the mundane, repetitive mediocrity.

@cjtopspin: You nerds seem to forget that even before having a slight clue about the force and Jedis she was already a scrap-digging slave who could scrounge through Star Destroyers carcasses doing flips while hanging from a rope and stuff which is shown in the first scene of the first movie (TFA) which shows she had a good knowledge in gymnastics. Add to that the manipulation of the force and a bit more training from a jedi master and she could easily achieve that.
