Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker Footage And New Poster Drops

Hopefully, Disney will release the footage wide soon.

Last weekend's D23 gave fans a better look at what movies Disney has coming out in the next couple of years, including a new trailer for The Mandalorian and news about the Obi-Wan TV series, both for Disney+. On Saturday, those attending the Disney Movies panel got to see some footage for Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker, and now, that footage has been released online.

Although the only people who actually got to watch the new footage were those who attended the panel, GameSpot's Chris E. Hayner was on the ground to tell us exactly what went down during the fast-paced video sequence. It opens up with Rey, Poe Dameron, Finn, Chewbacca, and C-3PO arriving on a planet. A fleet of Resistance fighters are coming out of lightspeed, which then turns into a reveal of a fleet of Star Destroyers, lined up in space in an attack position.

Back on the ground, Rey chops down a tree by throwing her lightsaber at it. This leads to a battle between Rey and Kylo Ren on what seems to be the planet from the end of the first Star Wars: Episode 9 trailer. At one point, Rey is using a double-sided, red lightsaber. What's different about this lightsaber is that it's like a switchblade knife. It started originally with two red beams, side by side, then snapped out to become double-sided. During this, Rey is wearing a hooded robe, which paired with the red lightsaber gives her a serious Dark Side vibe.

During the panel, the cast hit the stage to talk a little bit about their characters. Keri Russell spoke a bit about her role as Zorri Bliss, who has been a bit of a mystery to fans. "I had this amazing costume and this helmet, which I actually loved to wear and didn't take it off for the first two days," explained Russell. "I found it strangely empowering and exciting. [Zorri Bliss is] very cool and a little bit shady. She's kind of a criminal and sort of this old friend of Poe's."

Additionally, a new movie poster was revealed for the movie. It features Rey and Kylo Ren battling each other. A star-lit space is the backdrop, as well as the transparent face of The Emperor, who died in Return of the Jedi but makes his return in The Rise of Skywalker. Check it out below.

No Caption Provided

We'll have to wait and learn more about Zorri Bliss and the rest of Episode 9 until the movie hits theaters on December 20. Additionally, the Disney Movies Panel at D23 also revealed more info on the Black Widow, Eternals, and Black Panther 2 films.

Gonna put this here as it seems a good a place as any.

It hit me that everything announced at D23, everything, is based on IP from the last CENTURY. Superheroes. Star Wars. The Simpsons. Cruella. We are nineteen years into the 21st century, and Disney, based on this conference, has done nothing new in those 19 years (or more).

And really, it's us, the consumers, that are making that happen. They sell what we're gonna buy, we keep buying what they sell.

What is it with everybody? Why are we so into our franchises that we prefer the comfort food of the 20th century to anything new? Why, after the glut of creativity from the 1950s to the 1990s (as evidenced by all the stuff we're still seeing), did everyone just give up? I mean, besides money.

I have a horrible feeling I may end up going to this in the theater out of boredom... I have to find a way to resist spending any money on this.

For me this isn't Star Wars, Disney have just turned it into another Super Hero franchise.

@nomadski69: A fun fact : Indeed in the original Empire Strikes Back, Palpatine was played by the actress Marjorie Eaton and voiced by Clive Revill. That is before Lucas replacing the scenes with Ian McDiarmid in the Special Editions.

@gamingdevil800: I hesitantly feel the same. But I am really scared of getting burned again, but I will give some of these shows a chance. But yeah, that's gonna be a big no for the next movie. They burned that bridge already with the last movie.

@Poodger: Eh, Rian Johnson is out and JJ Abrams is back. Episode 9 may be derivative but it won't be the dumpster fire that The Last Jedi was. That said, The Mandalorian trailer looked pretty awesome, Ewan McGregor back as Obi Wan is fantastic, and I am beyond psyched for Clone Wars Season 7.

@dvdjedi: Director aside, the actual story for the new trilogy very much feels like it has been written into a corner. There is no remaining plot strand that I am at all interested in seeing the conclusion to. They may find some exciting thing to end it on, but it really doesn't feel like anything has been built up to for this final movie. Whatever trick they have up their sleeve for this new one will also be introduced in this new one.

Let me guess: the climatic scene is going to feature Rey and Kylo battling in Palpatine's throne room while Palpatine goads Rey to embrace the dark side.

@stjamesgabriel77: It would seem to be an implicit admission that the best days of Star Wars are behind us. I understand why George Lucas wanted to sell the franchise, because he wanted his legacy to live on, but I really wish he hadn't. Star Wars should have remained a six film saga about the fall and rise of Anakin Skywalker.

@dzimm: Well, he sold it for his legacy and the truly monstrous amount of money he got for it. If he ever gets sad about his legacy, he can always cheer himself up by buying another island.

@olddadgamer: Well, yes, Lucas has more money that any ten of us combined will ever see in our lifetime, so he can always wipe away his tears with handfuls of $100 bills. Still, it's a shame to see something that used to be great get destroyed by a soulless corporation like Disney.

Meh. The fact that they feel the need to bring back Palpatine (in such a big role) to "fix" the trilogy, is pretty pathetic.

There has been no foreshadowing for him before this movie, so it's not like it's been planned since the beginning for proper cohesion (which makes it worse).

@m4a5: Absolutely. The impression I have of the writing and directing process seems to be one of flying by the seat of their pants and rather than having a complete idea from beginning to end they are throwing, as they go, anything they can in the hopes of making a solid three picture trilogy.

@Solaryellow: Abrams and Johnson have publicly admitted, and even borderline bragged about the fact that there was no collaborative planning or even any communication between them whatsoever when they made their movies.

@m4a5: This trilogy is already not very cohesive. The third chapter would struggle to close the previous two films with what they have presented so far. They really burned themselves in this trilogy by not having a solid blueprint of the whole 3 film arc before even starting. The story is just all over the place.
