Star Wars Episode 8's Villain to Be Played by Benicio Del Toro

The Guardians of the Galaxy star confirms bad guy role.

As the release of Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens draws ever closer, speculation has begun on what the next part of the Star Wars saga will have in store. Rian Johnson was announced as Episode 8's writer and director last year, but now Benicio Del Toro has revealed that he has been cast as one of the film's main villains.

The star's involvement was rumoured in August, but he has now confirmed the news. In an interview with Spanish site rac1.org, Del Toro stated: "Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March. I'm like the villain, but we'll see." This will be Del Toro's second involvement in a massive Disney-produced fantasy franchise, following his role of The Collector in the Marvel smash Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last year, Johnson--best known for his sci-fi thriller Looper--spoke about being hired to direct Episode 8 in an interview with fellow director Terry Gilliam on the TalkHouse podcast. "I'm figuring it out as I go. I'm dancing on top of the avalanche a little bit," he said. "It's a balance of remembering what inspires you about [the original films]. But you can probably go to the wrong place by feeling too responsible to it. You have to keep your head loose enough to tell a story you actually care about."

Star Wars Episode 8 is due for release on May 26, 2017. In the meantime, Episode 7 hits cinemas on December 18, 2015, while the first standalone Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, will be released on December 16, 2016.

@Metallicwolf29:But was he? He was a bad mofo yes, But strongest?

That suit also limited him, Sidious saw to that, So I guess there is some evidence for what your saying.

Tbh his "heyday" was supposed to before he was sealed into that suit. (we all know how that went lol Damn you Lucas!!!)

Anyway what if there's a Sith who like Yoda who has been in hiding for years? Or an evil force ghost that twists Lukes star pupil?

The limits are open in this new one, But ultimately Vader bought balance to the force, If new Sith are popping up that kinda fucks up the ratio XD

@Metallicwolf29:

The rule of two only pertains to Bane's line. There have always been plenty of Sith all over the place.

@Metallicwolf29: Last I read Empress Marasiah Fel said that is not necessarily true. Besides, this is Hollywood. Nothing stays dead in Hollywood.

@Metallicwolf29: This is Hollywood. The first thing they said is that they are ignoring canon.

Awesome, I like Del Toro. He plays a good crazy person.

With that said, I've always kind of enjoyed how Star Wars casts lesser-known actors. This is a change, but it should prove a smart one.

@mrbojangles25 They still like to throw a well known into the mix to sort of guide the younger actors. Alec Guinness in the OT, Ewan McGregor in the prequels. The original cast in the new trilogy. It will be interesting to see how they avoid the trap of casting big name actors, which is are we going to see a new Star Wars character when we watch it, or are we going to see DelToro in a Star Wars costume. It's always tricky, but he is talented enough to make it work IMHO.:

@jski: They're putting Simon Pegg in an alien costume (I think), so it is entirely possible.

Del Toro has a very unique voice, or rather the way he speaks is very unique. It would lend itself well to either an alien or a very corrupt (Sith, even) human/humanoid villain.

He said "like the villain".. That is not "the villain". Chewbacca was "like the hero", but he definitely wasn't "the hero". Fantastically accurate and not-click-baiting-in-any-way headline.....

I think we'll see Kylo Ren go into the next one, at least. They've put too much effort into that character to pull a Darth Maul on us..... Again.

@mezzanine58 I'm pretty sure Driver is contracted to be in the entire new trilogy. Not 100% sure, but close.:

No one got vibes from Heath Ledger, either... Not saying Del Toro will make as great a villain as Ledger did, but he is a great enough actor to do a good villain.

It's waaay too early to be discussing Episode 8. Let's just get Episode 7 out the way first please.

@davillain-: not really I mean they have a trilogy planned out and it has to be from start to finish if only just to retain the stars for that long and to make sure their available for every movie for the next few years. When you're doing something like this you don't just do a fly by the edge of your seat one movie at a time type thing. You also don't want too big of a delay in between each movie. Besides episode 7 as far as filming goes has been done with for quite some time.

@mrbojangles25: can't tell if sarcasm...but yes, one main episode every 2 years interspersed with a spinoff film on the off years. Although Episode 8 is actually coming in summer 2017...Episode 7 was pushed to Christmas to give them more time to get it right. And for lack of competition.
