Star Wars Episode 8's Villain to Be Played by Benicio Del Toro

The Guardians of the Galaxy star confirms bad guy role.

As the release of Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens draws ever closer, speculation has begun on what the next part of the Star Wars saga will have in store. Rian Johnson was announced as Episode 8's writer and director last year, but now Benicio Del Toro has revealed that he has been cast as one of the film's main villains.

The star's involvement was rumoured in August, but he has now confirmed the news. In an interview with Spanish site rac1.org, Del Toro stated: "Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March. I'm like the villain, but we'll see." This will be Del Toro's second involvement in a massive Disney-produced fantasy franchise, following his role of The Collector in the Marvel smash Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last year, Johnson--best known for his sci-fi thriller Looper--spoke about being hired to direct Episode 8 in an interview with fellow director Terry Gilliam on the TalkHouse podcast. "I'm figuring it out as I go. I'm dancing on top of the avalanche a little bit," he said. "It's a balance of remembering what inspires you about [the original films]. But you can probably go to the wrong place by feeling too responsible to it. You have to keep your head loose enough to tell a story you actually care about."

Star Wars Episode 8 is due for release on May 26, 2017. In the meantime, Episode 7 hits cinemas on December 18, 2015, while the first standalone Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, will be released on December 16, 2016.

The avalanche of marketing and leaks for this is having the opposite of of it's intended effect. For me at least, the glut of constant information is killing my enthusiasm.

Hacks in Hollywood won't be able to write a decent story for Star Wars. The story from the original KOTOR is vastly superior to anything we'll see from the new movies.

I wish instead of following on from the original trilogy they opted to do a distant in the future series.

"Guardians of the Galaxy star"? He was there, yes, but I don't think that was a defining role of his.

Benicio Del Toro as the villain? I am SUPER ok with this.

Not so sure about the director though because I really did not like Looper.

You know, I was against it at first, but I've grown to accept Gamespot reporting on things not related to games.

That said, if this is the road you guys are taking, the name no longer fits. Why not rename it "The Spot"? It's short, catchy, and is broad enough to cover more than just games.

Hopefully the kids get blown out an airlock in the first 10 min and Luke goes back to Tatooine to live out his dream of becoming a moisture farmer. The rest of the movie could fallow his day to day struggles as a single farmer who heads down to the Cantina on Saturday nights to pull some wool. Who knows what could happen there. Will Luke or will Luke not have to light saber someones hand off to get the girls?

I really hope they don't do a new villian every movie. One of the things I hated about the prequels was they killed off the guys almost each film and never really let them shine. Maul killed in debut film, jango killed in debut film, dooku killed at very beginning of 2nd film, and grevous killed in debut film. Hard to take villian seriously when they die so quick.

@jizam_kizam: Jango was killed in the 2nd film, Dooku at the start of the 3rd and Grievous at the 3rd.

Cool, but I still find it weird they are giving us so much information on the cast for the following films. Not complaining though, tis just a bit curious.

Good good, I could see him as an Imperial.

But I'll tell you who would be far superior as an Imperial officer, His Wolfman co-star Hugo Weaving.

C'mon lets get Mr Smith into Star Wars in some capacity, He's awesome and would make a well decent baddy.

Who knows this could be something great I have a good feeling about this new trilogy and the spin-off movies. Sometimes I think we may actually get to see new interpretations of the EU it may not follow exactly but so many great stories have been told to draw inspiration from. Let's just be hopeful!

@goodemon: I worry its going to focus on these "new kids" far too much, Star Wars has always been about the Skywalker family and I hope Luke's part isn't going to be downplayed too much.

Please be a Thrawn, or at least a new version of Thrawn. And before anyone wastes the keystrokes, yes I know the old EU is no longer cannon, but they said they would still use it as a resource to draw ideas from for the future of the franchise.

@jski: Yeah I would think Thrawn would make a good villain and I think after Vader was killed Thrawn took over even though he was present during Vader time in power. I like to see something after Vader redeemed himself.

I really don't like Del Torro..... I find every character he plays is himself. His performance is the same in every movie... or at least the ones I've seen.

@whatsazerg You could say that about every well known actor from Jack Nicholson and Robert DeNiro to Judy Dench and Harrison Ford. And I don't see how the collector in GOTG and say, Fred Fenster from the usual suspects are similar at all. I think he would be a great Star Wars villain. Either way I guess we'll know soon enough.:

@jski: No... You really can't say that about all well known actors. There are certainly an abundance of them who are basically the same in everything, but there are others who have such an incredible range. Daniel Day-Lewis, Ralph Fiennes, Heath Ledger, Ben Kingsley... Seeing Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers was incredible. Even Matthew McConaughey, who I didn't really like at all until recently, puts quite a bit into his roles.

Now, as far as Del Toro... He's alright. The fact that I can't understand a damn thing he says is my main problem.

Are they really already marketing a movie almost 2 years away? Disney is riding the Star Wars cashcow hard.

Hate to be cynical but pretty sure these new SW movies are going to be mainstreamed into the shallow end of mediocrity just wake me up when Return of the Jedi is released in 3D.

@duke_cakewalker: All the Star Wars movies were purely mainstream. Nostalgia has not really turned Star Wars into art house/indie film making for you, has it? And Return of the Jedi was just barely watchable schlock, and possibly the worst example of mediocrity in the series (and no I no longer acknowledge the prequels exist) . How quickly we forget how awful and unbelievable the Ewoks were and how boring it was that we went back to Tatooine again instead of a new planet. Did we forget how they turned Han Solo from a confident, cocky smuggler who was one step ahead of everyone in the room, into a bumbling buffoon and slapstick comedy relief? They are riding the cash cow hard because it is a cash cow and they are a business. So far, Disney has done a good job with the franchise in terms of the Rebels tv series and some excellent comic books and novels. They surely have done the Marvel universe justice to all but the most jaded, and irrelevant, people around and I see no reason why they would not put that effort into a property they just spent billions on. Remember that if the first movie is the most successful movie in history they will still have not broken even on the purchase cost of the franchise. Disney are a lot of things, but dumb business people they are not. Sorry for the rant, if the movie comes out and sucks I will be the first to eat humble pie.

@jski:

The first Star Wars was not mainstream it had a small budget, full of original ideas and was released to no great fanfare back in 1977. Not "indie" but certainly not heavily marketed take no risk mainstream movie.

True ROTJ was the weakest of the 3 my personal favorite was TESB just think it would be best one in 3D because it has the most action sequences but really I just want to see the rancor and force lightning in 3D
