Star Wars Episode 8 and Standalone Film Rogue One Details Surface

Disney grabs several big names and Oscar winners to work on next batch of Star Wars films.

For many fans, the Star Wars prequels didn’t exactly live up to expectations. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones met with lukewarm reception, while Revenge of the Sith fared a little better. Since acquiring the Star Wars license back in October 2012, Disney has been trying to shake the negative reputation often associated with the recent films.

In a recent financial call, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced some rather impressive casting and crew choices for both Star Wars: Episode VIII and the first in a series of separate, standalone films titled Rogue One.

Episode VIII

  • Rian Johnson, director and screenwriter (Looper, Brick, The Brothers Bloom)
  • Kathleen Kennedy, producer (Looper, Don Jon, Brick, The Brothers Bloom)
  • Ram Bergman, producer (Looper, Don Jon, Brick, The Brothers Bloom)

Rogue One

  • Gareth Edwards, director (Monsters, Godzilla)
  • Chris Weitz, screenwriter (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz)
  • Simon Emanuel, executive producer (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6)
  • Jason McGatlin, executive Producer (Tintin, War of the Worlds)
  • John Knoll, executive producer (Star Trek: First Contact, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest)
  • Felicity Jones, starring (The Theory of Everything, The Tempest)

Rogue One most likely refers to the rogue squadron from the film The Empire Strikes Back. Few other details are known about the film, but the standouts here are Felicity Jones, John Knoll, and Chris Weitz. Jones and Knoll both have Academy Awards for best actress and special effects, respectively. Weitz has a nomination for best adapted screenplay.

A great crew doesn’t necessarily guarantee a great film, but Disney is certainly giving us a new reason to hope.

On the game side of things, the forthcoming Battlefront game from DICE won't be tying directly into the new movies. Star Wars: Battlefront should be out late in 2015.

Considering that Star Wars movies have a pretty big make-up department, that somewhat justifies all the "Rouge One" typos we'll see about this movie (already spotted one in a Swedish article).

<< LINK REMOVED >> hopefully they put more into makeup this time around. the cgi was a huge drawback for the later 1-3 episodes and the 4-6 remakes.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Comparing CG from the prequels (EpIII was in 2005) to CG being used now is like comparing the prequels to the originals in terms of special effects. Regardless of opinions Star Wars was always pushing new ground with the visuals. Back in the 70s they were doing things that hadn't been done, and the same goes for the prequels. Industrial Light & Magic set the standard for animation across a few decades.

Now that Disney has it, you can safely expect things you didn't know they could do/were doing already. Just look at the Marvel films, they incorporate CG about as seamlessly as you can get, to the extent that a lot of it goes by without being noticed as CG. For things like the Hulk, it's fairly obvious. But then you look at Iron Man and the various other "Armors" we get to see; virtually all scenes of them are CG overlay on top of the actors. There are only a very few instances where an actual "prop" was used as the armor.

If you're still unconvinced, a picture can do the trick: << LINK REMOVED >>

<< LINK REMOVED >> i thought the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Avengers were all pretty bad. Star Wars Episode 1-3 were quite a bit better but that's not saying much. the special effects look so cheesy with the digitized models that they use. the earlier 70s, 80s, even some 90s miniatures, makeup, and costumes look much better in my opinion.

but, i'm not comparing any CGI. i'm stating that it doesn't work as well as physical models in any scenario. there's just some scenes nowadays that are too expensive and too complex to use those better physical models so they are done by animation teams.

This is the new trend in Hollywood, to make cinematic universes:

> Marvel

> DC

> Valiant

> Ghostbusters

> Star Wars

<< LINK REMOVED >> i wouldn't say "to make" cinematic universes. i'd say to ruin them is the trend these days.

<< LINK REMOVED >> think you missed my point.

to a kid today with all these special fx movies/tv shows and games.. yeah it's over rated.

when it came out, none of the above were even on anyone's radar, it changed everything! so no, it's not overrated, it's what made it possible for you to watch all these superhero movies, and even games.

but, like most from this gen, you wouldn't know.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Speaking as a member of the Star Trek fanbase, he butchered it. The Abrams movies are so far from the spirit of the original that they should just drop the "Star Trek" name and call themselves "Shallow, Brainless Action Flick in Space: Stupid Subtitle". They have much more in common with Michael Bay's "Shallow, Brainless Action Flick with Robots: Stupid Subtitle" series than they do with real Star Trek.

Rian Johnson is listed under Episode VIII as "director, screen writer". Does that mean that JJ Abrams will not be directing Episode VIII?
