Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens is set to dominate IMAX screens when it is released in December. The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster will play on every IMAX screen in North America, plus much of Europe, for an entire month.

The JJ Abrams-directed film will open on December 18 and run for four full weeks in IMAX, meaning that no other movies can play the large-screen format until January 15, 2016. In addition, big November movie releases such as the James Bond adventure Spectre and the final Hunger Games film, Mockingjay Part 2, will have to have vacated IMAX cinemas by then.

New IMAX theatres are usually set up in the fall so there is no exact figure yet for the number of screens that The Force Awakens would play on, but The Hollywood Reporter estimated that between 375 and 400 domestic screens, and more than 400 overseas, would be showing the much-anticipated movie.

The last time IMAX committed to playing a single film was for the Hobbit trilogy, a deal that was struck with Warner in 2012 before the first part was released.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill. For more coverage, check out the links below:
