Star Wars Battlefront Seeing "Extremely Strong Preorders"

EA exec Peter Moore adds that Battlefront's showing at Gamescom will be "pivotal."

During an earnings call this afternoon, Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore revealed that DICE's upcoming shooter Star Wars Battlefront is enjoying "extremely strong preorders." He didn't share any specific numbers.

No Caption Provided

But, with the rise of digital gaming, physical preorders don't mean as they much as they might have used to, Moore acknowledged.

"More and more, as we see digital start take a hold with our consumers, that preorders become less of a key indicator," he said.

Looking ahead, Moore said he expects Battlefront's showing at Gamescom next week to be a "pivotal" moment for the game. Gamescom, unlike E3, is open to the public, and historically draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands.

"We expect to see a tremendous response from that," Moore said.

Moore's comments came in response to a question about how Battlefront's preorder numbers compare to those of Battlefield Hardline. He did not answer that part of the question.

Overall, Battlefront is expected to be a big-seller for EA, as the company anticipates that it will sell 9-10 million units by March 31, 2016.

Battlefront launches on November 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, just a few weeks before J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awkens hits theaters. Everyone who buys Battlefront will receive a free expansion called The Battle of Jakku, which is based on the upcoming movie.

In other recent news about Battlefront, EA has told fans not to worry about the game being delayed. We also today learned about Battlefront's new "Blast" mode, the game's version of team deathmatch.

damn....this is just sad. so many mindless sheep willing to settle for a game that offers so much less than all the previous entries in the franchise. this truly is a sad age of gaming we live in. well i can at least feel good about not supporting terrible game development.

WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE STILL PRE-ORDERING GAMES. If you pre-order a game then you're not allowed to complain if the game is broken at launch because if you had a brain and didn't pre-order games then you wouldn't have to risk a game being broken at launch. STOP PRE-ORDERING GAMES.

"The preorder is strong with you, but you're not a success yet!" As much as I dislike the lack of singleplayer content, if this does bad then they might decide that Star Wars and/or shooters based on Star Wars is bad and that's not good. I want a Jedi Knight-ish and KotOR-ish game and other successful Star Wars games makes that more likely to happen.

Not all that surprising, and you know at this point I'm tired of arguing about it. People are going to do what they want.

It's not worth being upset over it.

People still pre-order games? I'm not letting someone sit on my money for months. Unless it's for something like MGSV's collector's edition which will more than likely be in short supply.

You qll make me laugh. Pc gamers are the ones who pay for games to get early access and play the alpha or beta versions while its still getting made. Its probably because most of the bugs are on the pc versions. Well Kharma to you. I own a pc but any game available to consoles i favour mainly. But yeah lol to you saying no preorders. Your guys are the worst. Paying for development games. And you have the cheek to say no preorders.

@tttmann: Most people don't pay for development games either; it's definitely a small audience. Still, PC gamers have that choice though.

@grin89: Personally I don't have a big problem with how EA's been releasing games lately. Their last big screw-up in my opinion was Battlefield 4 with all the bugs when it released. Battlefield Hardline was a disappointing game, but generally they've been handling things reasonably well. As far as being a terrible company, Ubisoft has been much worse. They delay everything, they release games in terrible condition, they don't deliver on their promises, they force UPlay onto customers, and their games are becoming more generic by the minute. The only Ubisoft game I have some hope for is For Honor. As far as EA goes though, I'm thoroughly excited for Star Wars Battlefront, Mass Effect Andromeda and the Mirror's Edge sequel looks pretty good. They released a GOTY candidate in DA3 (though I'm not a fan) and they have a great program with good value in EA Access. The only thing I wish was that they didn't annualize Battlefield.

Hah ah ahahahaha

What sort of mug would pre-order anything these muppets churn out?

I'll be laughing my socks off when the bitching starts about the bug-ridden mess people have shelled out for before even seeing it in action.

They'll get what they deserve.

@gandospot: Great news for whom? For EA? Definitely. For gamers? Not really. More preorders means less incentive to release a "polished" product, because people buy that shit ANYWAY. **** preorders.

@warriors30: It doesn't mean that at all. It just gives companies an indication so they can make accurate sales forecasts, many do this for shareholders as well as they would most likely want to have an idea of projected profits etc. A Preorder will have no effect on the quality of the product as in most cases the product will be completed at the time Preorders are offered.

Also its consumer choice you can just as easily choose not to preorder as you can choose to preorder. It certainly isn't the sinister practice the misguided will have you believe.

Do you remember a time when shills supporting dodgy business practices would do it in a nice and reasonable manner? Today I can see angry shills shouting at people who are shouting at people not to pre-order. I can see people shouting at angry shills about shouting at people saying not to pre-order.

When will the madness end? I guess when people stop pre-ordering.. which will be never because for everyone of the savvy gamers who've been burned by a woeful pre-order, theres another 10 who've not had the same experience.

For those that have pre-ordered, I hope you're not disappointed. I'll laugh if you are, but I hope otherwise. I don't have enough faith to pre-order, with all the bugs and hiccups that usually accompany such big releases, plus, I'm cheap, and will gladly wait a while for a GoTY/Complete edition with all the DLC for much cheaper. For a game like this, if it's truly that amazing, the community will still be there down the line. If it turns out to be shoddy, then I saved myself money. Kudos to those with either the balls or the optimism to pre-order.

@DFBTG:

It's different preordering something you know you're going to get anyway (Fallout 4). It's preordering a totally new, unknown dev/IP with no previous market credentials that is a mistake.

I just hate the nit-picking of DLC that's held ransom behind it.

I pre-ordered a bunch of glasses and plates for the kitchen online. They all shipped broken and shattered. I requested a refund for the broken product, but the store said they wouldn't refund my money. Oh well, I guess that's how it is now, I might as well just accept it.

...this has been an allegory...

@rooster42: and the game will be the exact same on both. The are really going to look basically the same unless maybe you take a screen shot and compare. In motion with all the action, you won't notice a thing.
